A 25-year lifetime is not a universal prerequisite for a solar-panel technology to make economic sense. In a 2019 analysis, MIT researchers modeled cases where replacing modules after 10 to 15 years could lower the cost of electricity over a system’s life. The result depended on the technology, local conditions, and whether costly supporting equipment could stay in service; it is not a recommendation to replace working panels early.
What the MIT study challenged
The assumption in question was that a new solar-panel technology must prove it can last 25 years before it can be economically viable. In its November 22, 2019 account of a paper in Joule, MIT described a different possibility: an earlier-generation module might be replaced after 10 to 15 years by a more efficient or less expensive one, while much of the rest of the solar installation remains in place.

That reframes the question from “How long does this panel last?” to “What does the electricity from the whole system cost over time?” As Joel Jean, a former MIT postdoc and Swift Solar CEO at the time, put it in the MIT account: “We have to remember that ultimately what people care about is not the cost of the panel; it’s the levelized cost of electricity.”

Why replacing modules could change the economics
LCOE looks beyond the panel price
Levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) estimates the cost per unit of electricity across a system’s life. It considers more than the module purchase price: system cost, expected electricity production, financing, operating assumptions, and the period over which costs and output are counted all affect the result. A cheaper panel is not automatically a cheaper source of electricity if it produces less power or requires expensive replacement work.

Some installation costs may remain useful
Modules are only one part of a solar project. The balance of system can include inverters, racking, wiring, land, labor, permitting, and grid interconnection. If those components are still serviceable when modules are replaced, the next generation of panels may be installed without paying for an entirely new project. That can make earlier module turnover more attractive than a simple comparison of panel prices suggests.
Reuse is not automatic. Replacement modules need to be physically and electrically compatible with the retained equipment. A mismatch, or a need to replace inverters or other infrastructure at the same time, changes the calculation.

What systems and assumptions the researchers modeled
The MIT account says the researchers modeled three U.S. installation types using National Renewable Energy Laboratory benchmark parameters, then validated their models with four independent LCOE tools.
| Modeled system | System size in the 2019 analysis |
|---|---|
| Residential | 6 kilowatts |
| Commercial | 200 kilowatts |
| Utility-scale, with tracking | 100 megawatts |
Across these modeled system types, MIT reported that replacing modules after 10 to 15 years could provide an economic advantage in many cases. The timing was a modeled scenario, not a universal replacement schedule. Results depended on local conditions, technology improvement, financing, and how the initial modules were handled, including disposal or recycling.

What the study’s technology thresholds mean
For its U.S. analysis, MIT reported that a new technology could be competitive starting at a module efficiency of at least 20%, a cost no greater than 30 cents per watt, and a lifetime of at least 10 years—with room for each measure to improve. These are thresholds reported for that study’s model, not current market specifications, a present-day price guide, or a buying checklist for consumers.
The point was that a technology might enter the market before it could demonstrate a 25-year lifetime if its other attributes and the system-level economics supported it. Vladimir Bulović, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science and director of MIT.nano at the time, described the 25-year expectation as “a tautology” that had persisted in the field. That observation concerns a barrier to introducing new technologies; it does not mean long service life is unimportant to owners.

What this finding does—and does not—say about existing panels
It is not a recommendation to replace a functioning home system
The analysis does not establish that every short-lived module will be profitable, or that early replacement makes sense for a particular homeowner. It does not provide a current installation quote, retail panel price, incentive estimate, or compatibility assessment for an individual system. A homeowner comparing replacement with continued use would need project-specific estimates for expected output, the value of electricity locally, financing, remaining life and compatibility of existing equipment, and removal and handling costs.

Lifetime, warranty, and failure rate are different measures
A modeled lifetime threshold is not the same thing as a warranty term, a guaranteed output level, or an observed failure rate. The MIT account does not give a general failure-rate statistic. The study’s economic question was whether a technology with a shorter assumed useful life could still compete under modeled conditions, not how often panels fail in the field.

Don’t confuse this with MIT’s separate solar-cost study
MIT published another solar analysis in 2020, but it addressed a different question: how the benefits of utility-scale photovoltaics compared with costs at more than 10,000 U.S. electricity-pricing nodes. The study by Patrick R. Brown and Francis M. O’Sullivan considered 2010–2017 grid conditions and included market revenues alongside estimated health and climate benefits.
In MIT News’s June 23, 2020 account, the 2017 scenario reached break-even at 30% of modeled nodes when estimated health benefits were added to energy and capacity revenues. With a modeled carbon price of $100 per ton, break-even occurred at all modeled nodes. Those findings concern the value of solar generation in grid markets; they are not results from the 2019 module-replacement analysis and do not show that early panel replacement is viable everywhere.
The practical takeaway
The 2019 study pushes back on treating 25 years as an absolute entry requirement for every solar technology. It shows why system-level economics, module improvements, and the ability to reuse supporting equipment can matter more than panel price or lifespan considered alone. Its conclusion is conditional and model-based: whether early replacement is worthwhile depends on the project and its assumptions, not on a universal rule.
