Start with the internet equipment you already have, secure its administration and wireless settings, then configure guest access so visitors cannot reach business systems. The exact menus depend on the router or access point.
Decide who needs Wi-Fi access
Before changing settings or buying equipment, list the devices and people that need to connect. Include employee computers and phones, point-of-sale and other operational devices, and customers or visitors if you intend to offer them internet access. Decide who will manage guest credentials and when guest access should be available.

Keep visitor access separate from employee and business resources. The FTC’s small-business guidance puts it plainly: “If you offer Wi-Fi for guests or customers at your place of business, make sure it’s not connected to your business network.” FTC small-business cybersecurity guidance.

Check your existing internet equipment
Locate the modem or service-provider gateway, router, and any wireless access points. A gateway or router may already provide Wi-Fi; an additional access point is an option when you need more coverage or business WLAN features. The right arrangement depends on your current equipment, the premises, and the devices that will use the network.

For a small space, a current router may be enough. If you need more coverage or dedicated guest-WLAN functions, compare wireless access points that support those capabilities. Cisco’s small-business guest wireless guide describes employee connectivity, guest access, and guest isolation on its equipment; that is an example of available functionality, not a guarantee that every access point offers it.

Secure the router before enabling access
- Change administrative defaults. Replace preset router administrator credentials with a strong, unique password. Restrict or disable remote administration if you do not need it; the control and menu name vary by model.
- Set a non-default Wi-Fi name and password. Change the factory network name and use a strong, unique password for wireless access. Do not reuse the router’s administrator password.
- Choose current wireless security. Use WPA2 or WPA3. Microsoft recommends WPA3 when both the router and PC support it. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions for the available security mode. Microsoft’s wireless network guidance explains the security options.
- Update router software. Install firmware and security updates using the manufacturer’s current instructions. CISA’s exposure-reduction guidance recommends patching systems and replacing unsupported devices. For broader wireless-security context, consult CISA’s Guide to Securing Networks for Wi-Fi.
Configure guest Wi-Fi as a separate network
Use the router or access point’s documentation to create a guest WLAN or guest network. A separate network name helps avoid sharing the employee Wi-Fi password, but the name alone does not prove that guest devices are separated from the internal network.
- Open the manufacturer’s current setup instructions for your exact router or access point. Menu labels and capabilities differ by model.
- Create the guest network and set its own access credentials or login options, if available. Cisco’s Business Wi-Fi 6 Administration Guide, version 10.6.2.0, documents guest WLAN settings for that product family.
- Enable guest isolation, client isolation, or network segmentation where supported, so visitors cannot reach employee devices or business resources. Some systems offer a guest-network setting; more capable deployments may use VLANs and firewall rules.
- Verify the outcome in the settings or ask your network administrator or equipment vendor to confirm that guest traffic cannot access the internal LAN. A guest network’s label is not a substitute for checking its isolation behavior.
The FTC’s home Wi-Fi guidance explains the general purpose of a separate guest login. For a business, use the equipment’s actual isolation or segmentation controls rather than assuming home-network guidance is sufficient.

Test Wi-Fi where people will use it
Walk the work areas with a connected device and check whether the connection is usable where staff and guests need it. Coverage depends on the premises, including walls, layout, and connected-device load; a product label alone cannot establish what will work in your space.
If coverage is weak, check access-point placement and obstructions first. Then assess whether another access point or a professional installation is appropriate. Site-specific conditions determine the right fix.

Maintain the network
- Assign someone responsibility for router and access-point administration and guest-network changes.
- Check for firmware and security updates on a routine schedule.
- Remove unused accounts and replace credentials when access no longer needs to be shared.
- Review whether devices remain supported and whether internet-exposed equipment still needs to be exposed.
CISA’s guidance on reducing internet exposure recommends changing default passwords, applying patches, replacing unsupported systems, and reassessing exposed assets.

What to compare when choosing equipment
- Coverage: Consider the physical layout, walls, and separate work areas rather than relying on a claimed range alone.
- Device and application needs: Account for the number and types of devices, including any business applications sensitive to latency.
- Guest controls: Confirm that the system supports a separate guest network and meaningful isolation or segmentation.
- Security lifecycle: Check update support, administration controls, and the ongoing effort needed to manage the equipment.
- Compatibility: Make sure the router or access point fits your modem, switches, and any VLAN or firewall design already in place.
Vendor documentation can explain a product’s functions, but it does not establish which model is right for a particular business. Check the manual and support information for the exact equipment before following setup steps.
Scope: premises Wi-Fi, not cellular hotspot service
This guide covers Wi-Fi at a business premises using a router, gateway, or access point. A cellular hotspot used as primary or backup internet service is a different setup decision involving carrier terms, data limits, signal quality, and backup connectivity; those details are not established here. Requirements for offering guest Wi-Fi can also vary by jurisdiction, so this guide does not make a legal-compliance determination.
