Not on that evidence alone. A successful payment proves one route through checkout worked; it does not prove the resulting order, stock, shipping, tax, notifications, and connected services behave correctly. Go live only after rehearsing the customer journey your store actually offers and resolving every launch-blocking failure.
What a successful checkout does—and does not—prove
A completed payment is one useful test, not a launch certificate. The test should also show that the order is recorded correctly, inventory is adjusted as expected, the right shipping and tax are applied, and the customer receives the expected confirmation. Shopify’s launch guidance describes test orders as a way to check checkout, order processing, inventory, shipping, and taxes; its test-order instructions also cover notifications. Shopify’s store-launch checklist and test-order guidance outline those checks.

Readiness depends on the actual store: its payment methods, products, shipping zones, taxes, apps, and customer paths. Shopify and WooCommerce guidance offers useful scenarios, but the precise settings differ by platform, provider, country, and configuration. Nothing about a payment screen alone establishes this store’s compliance, security, uptime, or conversion performance.
Rehearse the customer paths your store offers
Plan a compact set of representative orders rather than clicking through only one ideal purchase. Choose products and addresses that exercise meaningful differences in your catalog and fulfillment setup.

WooCommerce’s launch and migration checklists also call for functional, integration, browser, and accessibility testing, including relevant first-time-user flows. See its launch checklist and ecommerce migration guide.
Test payment outcomes safely
Use sandbox or gateway test mode where possible
A provider’s sandbox or test mode can simulate transactions without charging a customer. Use it to check at least an approved payment and a declined payment: the approved case should create the expected order, while the declined case should show a clear, recoverable error and leave the order in the expected state. Follow the instructions for your specific provider and platform. Shopify explains simulated outcomes in its payment gateway test-mode instructions.
Test mode has a launch-critical side effect: customers cannot place live card orders while providers remain in test mode. Shopify explicitly warns of this in its test-mode and test-order guidance. Make turning test mode off—and verifying live payment availability—a named sign-off check, not an assumption.

If you use a real transaction, account for its side effects
Some providers or setups require a real transaction to validate the live flow. Know in advance whether it can incur a fee, and follow the provider’s instructions to cancel or refund promptly. Shopify documents real-order testing and the need to process the order appropriately in processing a test order. WooCommerce describes sandbox testing and recommends staging for safer testing in its testing-orders guidance. Do not treat a real charge as equivalent to a harmless simulation.
Verify what happens after the customer pays
For each representative successful order, compare what the customer sees with what staff and connected systems receive.
- Order record: Confirm the correct items, quantities, customer details, payment status, and totals appear in the administration view.
- Stock and fulfillment: Check the expected inventory adjustment and that any fulfillment or inventory integration receives the order.
- Shipping and tax: Compare the selected rate and calculated tax with the store’s configured rules for that product and address.
- Customer communications: Confirm the confirmation page and email are accurate and readable, and that staff notifications reach the intended recipients.
- Connected services: Check relevant tax, analytics, marketing, subscription, and other apps or integrations for the expected order event.
A checkout can appear successful to a customer while a downstream integration, notification, or stock update is missing. Shopify’s Shopify Plus go-live guide includes integrations, analytics, domains, backups, settings, payment, checkout scenarios, and launch checks; use only the portions relevant to your configuration.

Repeat the journey on mobile and with accessibility basics
Use a real iOS or Android phone available to you; there is no need to buy a new device just to test checkout. WooCommerce recommends real-device mobile testing and accessibility checks in its migration testing guidance and launch checklist.

Check launch configuration, not just the order flow
Before opening the storefront, review the settings that determine whether customers can reach and use the production store. The exact controls vary by platform; use the relevant launch checklist and provider instructions rather than assuming a staging setup matches production.
- Confirm the intended production payment provider and payment methods are enabled, and test mode is off.
- Verify the public domain, storefront access, and any checkout or payment redirects.
- Review shipping, tax, inventory, notification, and app settings in the live configuration.
- Check analytics and other integrations that are part of your operation, plus backups and monitoring where applicable.
Keep an issue log for the rehearsal: scenario, expected result, observed result, owner, and retest status. This makes a failed path actionable and gives the launch decision a record rather than relying on memory.
Make the go/no-go decision
Go when every material customer and payment path offered by the store behaves as intended; totals, tax, shipping, stock, notifications, and relevant integrations match expectations; mobile and applicable accessibility checks pass; and production payment and public launch settings are verified.
Hold if a payment path fails, totals are wrong, an important integration loses the order, customers cannot complete checkout on a supported device, or test mode is still active. Assign the issue to an owner, fix it, and rerun the affected scenario before launch. Shopify and WooCommerce do not prescribe a universal pass percentage or a universal number of test orders, so the gate should be based on whether the store’s actual critical paths work—not an invented threshold.
Testing is not a compliance determination
Passing a checkout rehearsal does not certify legal compliance or payment security. PCI DSS scope depends on how cardholder data is handled in the store’s specific payment flow. Consult the payment provider and applicable compliance guidance for that setup; WooCommerce’s PCI-DSS overview, updated June 6, 2025, summarizes scope considerations but is not a substitute for the standard or a compliance determination.
