A small-sounding client request is not automatically scope creep. Check it against the agreed scope and acceptance criteria, estimate any effect on cost, timing, dependencies, and priorities, then get written approval before starting work that is not already included.
Why “just one tiny change” can become a bigger job
The person asking may see a single edit; implementing it can involve connected parts of a deliverable or system. That possibility is a reason to assess the actual request—not to assume it is either trivial or out of scope. A freelancer discussion captures the familiar concern about small requests growing into an extra project, but it is an example of reader language, not evidence that the problem is universal.

Start with the work you agreed to deliver. The signed scope, specifications, and acceptance criteria are the reference points. If the requested change is already promised, handle it as included work. If it changes a requirement or adds a deliverable beyond that agreement, use a change process.
A practical process for handling a new request
- Acknowledge and record it. Capture who made the request, what they want changed, and why it matters. Keep requests in one shared place, such as the project tracker or request log, so the team and client are working from the same description.
- Check the agreement. Compare the request with the signed scope, specifications, and acceptance criteria. Treat promised work as included. For work not covered by the agreement, continue to an impact assessment rather than beginning it informally.
- Assess the impact. Identify the work involved and any dependencies. Estimate the effect on price, delivery date, and existing priorities. A seemingly minor change may touch connected parts of a deliverable, so confirm the implementation before calling it small.
- Send a written choice. Describe the additional work and its cost and schedule effect. Ask the client to approve it, decline it, defer it, or exchange it for another priority. Wait for authorization in the form agreed for the project before starting out-of-scope work.
- Update the project record. Once approved, record the change and its agreed impact so the revised expectations are clear to everyone involved.
Distinguish included revisions from new work
Routine revisions and materially changed requirements are not the same thing. Define the revision process and, where appropriate, its limits in the original scope. That gives both sides a shared basis for deciding whether a requested adjustment is part of the agreed work or needs a change order.

Explain the change process when contracting or at kickoff. Present it as a clear way to make decisions—not a punishment for asking. Specify how included revisions work, how new requirements will be assessed, and what written authorization is needed to begin additional work.
