That price could make a simple chat service more accessible, but it does not show that Plainly matches ChatGPT’s capabilities. The vendor says it is designed for straightforward questions, not users who need the most powerful models, model choice, or API access.
What is the $5 ChatGPT rival?
Plainly’s official website presents the service as a simple place to ask questions, with unlimited chat advertised at $5 per month. It says users do not need to choose a model and can stop their subscription at any time through the billing tab. These are the company’s current product-page claims; the page does not establish geographic availability or independently verify the service’s capabilities. Plainly

The title does not identify a specific product, so Plainly is a likely match rather than a confirmed referent. Its price is substantially below the $20-a-month comparison price Plainly itself invokes, but a lower fee alone says nothing about whether answers are as accurate or useful as those from another service.

Plainly says it is not intended for professionals who need API access, the most powerful models, or control over which model they use. Its stated appeal is simplicity and a lower monthly price, not maximum capability or customization.
#1 Best Overall
- Model choice: Plainly says users do not need to select a model; it does not promise a choice of models.
- Top-tier models: The company explicitly says the service is not for users who need the most powerful models.
- API access: Plainly says it is not for people who require API access.
- Usage: The site advertises unlimited chat, but the reviewed product page does not give further details about usage conditions or service availability.
Does Plainly match ChatGPT’s quality?
That has not been established by the available evidence. Plainly’s product page advertises a price and describes its intended audience, but it provides no independent, like-for-like evaluation against ChatGPT. Without testing the same tasks under comparable conditions, the $5 price cannot be treated as evidence of equivalent answer quality.
For a real-world decision, judge the service on the tasks you actually care about: for example, whether it follows instructions, handles your subject matter, and produces answers you can verify. Also compare the model information, usage conditions, availability, and terms that matter to your work. The available material does not support a performance ranking between Plainly and ChatGPT.

What does Plainly say about privacy?
Plainly says, “We never use your conversations to train AI.” That is a company statement about training use, not a complete account of privacy practices. The reviewed page does not settle how long conversations are retained, where data is hosted, or whether the claim has been independently audited. Read the service’s current privacy terms before entering sensitive information. Plainly’s website

Is SubQ another $5 chatbot?
No. Subquadratic’s SubQ announcement describes a separate, early-access offering for developers and enterprise teams, not a consumer chatbot subscription priced at $5. On May 5, 2026, the company said private beta access was beginning for its API, SubQ Code command-line coding agent, and SubQ Search long-context search tool. Its announcement is relevant to the broader push to reduce AI computing costs, but it is not evidence that Plainly and ChatGPT offer equivalent consumer experiences. Subquadratic’s SubQ announcement
Rank #3
Subquadratic reported several benchmark and efficiency comparisons in that announcement. The company reported 95.6% on RULER 128K for SubQ 1M-Preview, compared with 94.8% for Claude Opus 4.6; a 52× speed advantage over FlashAttention and 63% less compute in an architecture-level comparison; an MRCR v2 production-model score of 65.9, which it described as third-party verified; and a SWE-Bench Verified score of 81.8, compared with 80.8 for Claude Opus 4.6 and 80.0 for Deepseek 4.0 Pro. These are company-reported results in the May 2026 announcement, not an independent review of everyday chatbot use or proof of consumer subscription parity.
The same announcement says Subquadratic achieved a research result at 12 million tokens with nearly 1,000× lower attention compute than other frontier models at that context length. That, too, is a Subquadratic claim about its technology—not a measure of how a $5 chat subscription performs for ordinary questions.

Who might find a low-cost chat plan useful?
A low monthly price may matter most to someone who wants a straightforward place to ask questions and does not need to select a model or use an API. Whether Plainly is worthwhile depends on whether it works well enough for that person’s tasks; the advertised price cannot answer that on its own.
Recommended Free Tools
Someone who relies on model choice, API integration, or access to the strongest models should weigh those needs against Plainly’s stated limitations before subscribing. For any prospective user, the key unresolved question is not whether $5 is cheaper than a price Plainly compares it with, but whether the service’s answers, terms, and availability fit the intended use.
