The Best Witcher Games to Play Right Now in 2026, Ranked

The Witcher 3 Remastered is the clear first pick in 2026, with both expansions included and four platforms supported. Here is how the older games fit in.

Start with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered. CD PROJEKT RED’s release notice dates its launch to September 29, 2026, and it is the only Witcher game with current, officially confirmed availability across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The older games are worth knowing about, but their current platforms and editions are not confirmed here, so this ranking is firm at the top and deliberately cautious below it.

The ranking at a glance

Rank Game Who it suits What is confirmed
1 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered First-time players and returning fans Released September 29, 2026; PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2; Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine included as standard on supported platforms
2 The Witcher 2 Players who want the story between the first and third games Current platform and edition availability by region not confirmed
3 The Witcher (the first game) Series completists Current platform and edition availability by region not confirmed

The order of places 2 and 3 follows the series’ release order in reverse, as a guide to context rather than a tested verdict. I have not compared current store listings for the first two games, so check your platform’s store before buying.

1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered

This is the pick for anyone playing a Witcher game now. The official Witcher site lists it for four platform families: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. CD PROJEKT RED says both major expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, come as standard on supported platforms. That makes it a complete story in one purchase, with no separate add-on hunt.

What changed in the Remastered version

The publisher’s announcement lists improvements to visuals, performance, combat, skills and animations. Those are the publisher’s own descriptions. This article has not tested the game, so treat them as claims until independent reviews and your own play confirm them.

Why it still ranks first on reputation

In its 2025 anniversary announcement, CD PROJEKT RED said the game had won “over 250 Game of the Year awards”, a figure it reported itself for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition. It is useful history, not an audited measure, and it is not what puts the game first. The deciding factors are current availability, included expansions and platform reach.

Check upgrade eligibility before you buy

CD PROJEKT RED describes Remastered as a free upgrade for owners on qualifying platforms. Its support FAQ spells out which existing versions and platforms qualify and how to claim. It also says owners of The Witcher 3 on Nintendo Switch can claim the Switch 2 version. Do not assume every old copy or purchase route qualifies. Read the FAQ, or check your platform store, before paying for a second copy.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition (Xbox Series X)
  • PLAY AS A HIGHLY TRAINED MONSTER SLAYER FOR HIRE: Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
  • Gruesomely destroy foes as a professional monster hunter armed with a range of upgradeable weapons, mutating potions, and combat magic.
  • Hunt down a wide variety of exotic monsters, from savage beasts prowling mountain passes to cunning supernatural predators lurking in the shadowy back alleys of densely populated cities. Invest your rewards to upgrade your weaponry and buy custom armor, or spend them on horse races, card games, fist fighting, and other pleasures life brings.
  • EXPLORE A MORALLY AMBIGUOUS FANTASY OPEN WORLD: Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity. Traverse a fantastical open world: explore forgotten ruins, caves, and shipwrecks, trade with merchants and dwarven smiths in cities, and hunt across the open plains, mountains, and seas. Deal with treasonous generals, devious witches, and corrupt royalty to provide dark and dangerous services. Make choices that go beyond good & evil, and face their far-reaching consequences.
  • TRACK DOWN THE CHILD OF PROPHECY: Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world. In times of war, chase down the child of prophecy, a living weapon foretold by ancient elven legends. Struggle against ferocious rulers, spirits of the wilds, and even a threat from beyond the veil – all hell-bent on controlling this world. Define your destiny in a world that may not be worth saving.
  • Already own an eligible copy: follow the FAQ’s claim process rather than buying again.
  • Don’t own it: buy the listing that matches your platform and names the Remastered edition, and confirm the expansions are listed.
  • Playing on Switch 2: the claim route for existing Switch owners is in the official FAQ.

2 and 3. The Witcher 2 and the original Witcher

The earlier games are the series’ backstory. They are best seen as optional context for players who finish The Witcher 3 and want more, or who prefer to play in release order. Current platform availability and editions for these two could not be confirmed from official sources, and these listings can vary by region and storefront. Verify on your own store, and don’t treat this ranking as a purchase recommendation for either one.
