The best pick depends on whether you need close-range stopping power, precision, or utility, and on the mode you are playing.

The order below is a practical starting point inferred from The Coalition’s stated weapon roles and handling traits. It is not a measured comparison of damage, time-to-kill, or win rates.

Gnasher — best provisional close-range Versus pick
The Coalition uses the Gnasher as its example of sliding into a close-range “gib,” making it the clearest candidate for decisive close fights. Its capacity is six shells, down from eight in earlier versions, and it supports round-by-round active reload: you can load one or two shells without completing a full reload cycle. That makes reload timing part of the fight, but the close-range ranking should be confirmed against the release build. The Coalition’s July 31, 2026 gameplay update explains the changes.

Breechshot — best provisional precision payoff
The Coalition describes the Breechshot as capable of a one-shot headshot kill in PvP, and says it gains round-by-round active reload. That is a potent design claim for players who can land headshots, not proof of its practical hit rate or superiority in matches. Official material cited here does not compare its firing speed, ammunition economy, or accuracy with other weapons.

The developer calls it “a great all round rifle,” pointing to a higher rate of fire and deeper magazine than recent Lancers. Those traits support treating it as an adaptable default candidate; they do not establish that it is the strongest weapon in every fight or mode.

The Hammerburst fires an accurate six-round burst, according to the official update, and a perfect active reload increases its rate of fire. It may suit players who prefer controlled bursts, but no comparative damage or time-to-kill figures are available to quantify its advantage.

Which gun should you use in Versus?
Versus gives players the same starting loadout and equipment, disables weapon mods, and makes Power Weapons map pickups. That means the most useful comparison is not simply “which gun has the best stats”: consider the engagement distance, your aim, reload handling, and the job your team needs done in a fight. The official multiplayer overview describes these mode rules.
- For close-range fights, start with the Gnasher as a provisional choice.
- For a high-risk precision attempt, consider the Breechshot, while treating its one-shot headshot description as a developer claim rather than an independently measured result.
- For a flexible rifle, the Prototype Lancer has the clearest all-round endorsement in the official description.
- Use the Snub to finish or switch quickly, and smoke to obscure sightlines for a reposition or charge.
How Horde Siege and Campaign change the ranking
Horde Siege
Horde Siege supports weapon mods and class progression. Weapon parts fund mods, and some mods can change a weapon’s functionality. A weapon’s value therefore depends on its class role, chosen mod build, mission length, and whether the squad needs to defend, move, or extract. The Versus ordering above cannot account for those build choices.

Campaign
Official material confirms weapon mods in Campaign but does not provide enough campaign-specific comparative data to rank weapons for that mode. The list here should not be read as a campaign tier list.
What the official weapon descriptions establish—and what they do not
The Coalition says E-Day uses simulated projectile ballistics and travel time: “All projectiles now have simulated ballistics and travel time.” At range, that can mean leading a moving target rather than aiming directly at it. The update also describes weapon-specific handling and reload changes, but it does not provide a complete numerical comparison of damage, effective range, accuracy, ammunition, or kill times.
Gameplay director Matt Searcy described the intended tension of active reload in the June 9, 2026 Official Xbox Podcast: “It adds to the tension of reloading your weapon, how you manage your weapon, whether or not you’re going to jam it, get extra damage.” That comment explains the design goal; it is not independent evidence of a weapon’s match performance. The podcast transcript is published by Xbox Wire.
Xbox lists E-Day for October 6, 2026, so this ranking is dated to the pre-launch period and does not report results from the release build. Check Xbox’s official listing for release information. A reliable post-launch comparison would need to hold mode, build, and player-skill conditions constant while measuring engagement distance, damage and shots to down or kill, recoil, reload cadence, ammunition, mobility, map access, and—for Horde Siege—class and mod interactions.
