For a conventional touchscreen laptop, Tom’s Guide names the Dell XPS 14 (2026) its best pick for most people; for a convertible 2-in-1, RTINGS names the LG gram Pro 2-in-1 16 (2026) its best tested model. Those are reviewer-specific picks, not a single universal winner: the Dell prioritizes a compact premium laptop design, while the larger LG can switch into tablet mode but is less comfortable to hold that way. The right choice depends on whether you want a touchscreen clamshell, a rotating convertible, or a detachable tablet—and on the workloads, software, and accessories you need.

Which type of touchscreen laptop should you choose?
Conventional touchscreen laptop
A clamshell laptop adds touch input to the familiar laptop layout: the display does not rotate behind the keyboard or detach. It is the straightforward choice if you mainly type, use a trackpad and want to tap or scroll on screen. The Dell XPS 14 is the conventional option among the reviewer picks here.
Convertible 2-in-1
A convertible keeps the keyboard attached and uses a 360-degree hinge to fold the screen around into a tablet-like position. That makes it versatile on a desk or in a presentation setup, but the keyboard remains behind the screen when held as a tablet. A large convertible such as the 16-inch LG gram Pro can be useful for a spacious display, yet cumbersome to hold for long periods.

Detachable 2-in-1
A detachable separates the display from a magnetic keyboard and typically uses a kickstand. It can be easier to hold as a tablet than a convertible, but the kickstand-and-keyboard arrangement is generally less suitable on a lap. Microsoft presents Surface Pro as this kind of device; check the accessory bundle and compatibility for the specific generation.
WIRED’s 2026 2-in-1 guide captures the design trade-off in its reviewer’s words: “Of all the models I’ve tested, no 2-in-1 laptop is equally good at being both a tablet and a laptop.” The guide says these devices tend to favor one mode over the other. Treat that as the reviewer’s assessment, not a technical rule that every buyer will experience identically.
Best touchscreen laptop for most: Dell XPS 14 (2026)
Tom’s Guide names the Dell XPS 14 (2026) its best touchscreen laptop for most. Its roundup lists a 14-inch OLED touchscreen with 2.8K resolution (2880 × 1800) and a 120Hz refresh rate. The compact premium design is a draw if you want a laptop-sized touch display rather than a tablet-first hybrid.
Tom’s Guide lists configurations with an Intel Core Ultra X7 358H processor, Intel Arc B390 integrated graphics, 16GB to 32GB of RAM and 512GB to 1TB of storage, and gives the reviewed configuration a weight of 3 pounds. Those are roundup-listed specifications, not a guarantee that every regional SKU has the same parts. Confirm the seller’s exact configuration before purchase.
The compromises noted by Tom’s Guide are the smaller screen and the absence of a microSD card slot. If you regularly work with full-size documents side by side or want a built-in card reader, those points may matter more than the compact design. Best large convertible: LG gram Pro 2-in-1 16 (2026)
RTINGS named the LG gram Pro 2-in-1 16 (2026) its best 2-in-1 in an update dated October 1, 2026. RTINGS describes the OLED touchscreen as clear and vivid and its 120Hz refresh rate as making scrolling and pen input feel smooth. It also says battery life lasts a normal workday; that is RTINGS’ assessment, not a directly comparable battery-test result across every laptop in this guide.
The 16-inch format gives you more screen area in laptop mode, but RTINGS says it is awkward to hold as a tablet. It also reports that the laptop gets hot and performance declines under demanding workloads, and describes the keyboard as firm. Those trade-offs make it a more natural fit for desk-based work and occasional touch or pen use than for frequent handheld tablet sessions or sustained heavy workloads.

Best smaller OLED convertible: Lenovo Yoga 9i 2-in-1 Aura Edition 14 (2025)
The Lenovo Yoga 9i 2-in-1 Aura Edition 14 (2025) is the more portable convertible alternative in this set. RTINGS says its 14-inch format is easier to carry than the 16-inch LG gram and that its battery lasts longer than the LG’s. RTINGS also flags CPU performance and availability trade-offs, so check whether the specific configuration is sold where you live and suits your workload.
Tom’s Guide describes its 14-inch panel as 2.8K OLED and measured color coverage at 210.6% sRGB and 149.2% DCI-P3. Those figures are Tom’s Guide’s lab result for the Yoga 9i it reviewed, not a general property of OLED laptops. Tom’s Guide also judged the performance less compelling for the $1,549 price it cited; because price is time- and region-sensitive, treat that as the review’s cited price rather than a current universal price. See Tom’s Guide’s touchscreen laptop roundup and RTINGS’ 2-in-1 recommendations for each publisher’s assessment.

Other designs to consider: Surface Pro and Surface Laptop
Microsoft Surface Pro
Microsoft describes Surface Pro as a detachable 2-in-1 that supports touch, a keyboard and Surface Slim Pen workflows. This makes it a candidate if separating the screen from the keyboard is important to you. Verify compatibility for the exact Surface Pro generation, and check whether the keyboard and pen are sold in the configuration you are considering. Microsoft’s descriptions of performance and battery benefits are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Consult Microsoft’s Surface Pro product information for the relevant model.

Microsoft positions Surface Laptop as a conventional clamshell with a touchscreen and built-in keyboard. It suits buyers who want a standard laptop form factor rather than a folding or detachable device. Treat broad performance statements on Microsoft’s product page as vendor claims, not independent benchmark findings. Check the specifications for the exact model and market at Microsoft’s Surface Laptop product information.

Display size and panel matter as much as touch
Compare screen size, resolution and panel type against how you work: a compact screen is easier to carry, while a larger panel gives you more room for windows and documents. Brightness and refresh rate also affect day-to-day use. For example, the cited Dell has a 14-inch 2.8K OLED panel at 120Hz, while RTINGS describes the LG’s OLED and 120Hz refresh rate as strengths. These specifications alone do not establish that one screen is better for every setting or user.
Match the processor and memory to your workload
For browsing, office work and video calls, prioritize a configuration that fits your expected multitasking and storage needs. For sustained demanding work, check independent results for the exact model: RTINGS reports heat and reduced performance on the LG under heavy workloads, while the reviewed sources do not establish a shared benchmark comparison across all the candidates. Do not infer a cross-model performance ranking from different review pages.
Compare battery results only when methods match
Battery life depends on configuration, workload, display settings and test method. RTINGS’ description of the LG as lasting a normal workday and its comparison of the Yoga 9i’s battery with the LG are that publisher’s review findings. TechRadar also reports long battery life for the Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1, but its results should not be ranked directly against other publishers’ tests without aligned methods. Look for the reviewer’s stated test conditions before treating any duration as a buying promise.
Rank #4
Check portability, keyboard and tablet handling
Weight is only one part of portability. Consider the screen size, hinge or kickstand, keyboard feel and how often you will actually hold the device as a tablet. The Dell’s 3-pound figure is the weight Tom’s Guide lists for its configuration. RTINGS describes the LG’s keyboard as firm and its 16-inch body as awkward to hold as a tablet; a 14-inch convertible such as the Yoga 9i is easier to carry, according to RTINGS.
Inspect ports, configurations and upgrade options
List the ports you use before settling on a model—especially if you rely on a memory-card reader or connect peripherals without a hub. Tom’s Guide notes that the XPS 14 lacks a microSD slot. Also compare RAM and storage in the exact SKU; the XPS 14 roundup lists 16GB to 32GB RAM and 512GB to 1TB storage across configurations, not a single fixed spec. The reviewed material does not establish upgradeability for every model, so check the manufacturer’s specifications for the particular SKU rather than assuming components can be changed later.
Confirm operating-system and app compatibility
If you depend on specialist, older or enterprise software, check that it supports the processor architecture and operating system of the exact laptop you plan to buy. ARM-versus-x86 compatibility can affect particular applications and peripherals; the model information summarized here does not establish compatibility for every program. Verify with the software or device maker before purchase if a specific app or accessory is essential.
Verify pen and keyboard support—and what is in the box
Touch input does not automatically mean a stylus is included or supported. For handwriting, sketching or detachable use, confirm the exact pen and keyboard model compatibility, whether accessories are bundled, and any regional differences in the package. Microsoft’s Surface Pro guidance identifies keyboard and Surface Slim Pen workflows, but the bundle and compatibility still need checking for the generation you choose.

How to read laptop review claims fairly
The candidates above come from separate reviews and roundups, not one common test bench. A battery result from one publisher cannot establish a direct ranking against a result from another unless the workloads and conditions match. Likewise, a reviewer’s “best” label reflects that publication’s priorities and date. Use the picks to narrow the form factor, then compare the exact configuration and test details that matter to your use.
Prices, availability, configurations and rankings can change. The cited $1,549 for the Lenovo is Tom’s Guide’s review-era figure, and the 2026 model specifications above are those listed by the named reviewers. Check current local listings and manufacturer specifications before buying.
Related model comparisons
TechRadar’s separate roundup includes the Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1 and Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i. It reports long battery life for the Dell alongside a 300-nit IPS screen, and describes the Lenovo’s OLED display and strong multitasking alongside limited ports and less impressive battery life. These are TechRadar’s observations and should not be treated as directly comparable measurements to RTINGS or Tom’s Guide results. See TechRadar’s 2-in-1 laptop roundup for its coverage.
