Accessibility also depends on the specific features available in the edition and platform you play. XCOM 2 is a well-documented example of deliberate, turn-based squad tactics, while the evidence here is not enough to rank a broad list of current games by accessibility. Use the checks below to find a good fit—and to verify that a listed feature is actually available to you.
What to check before choosing a tactics game
Find out how difficulty can be adjusted
Look for the names of the difficulty modes, what changes between them, and whether you can adjust settings after a campaign begins. A preset may change several systems at once; granular controls may let you tune them separately. Steam’s developer guidance recommends explaining preset differences and offering granular difficulty controls where practical. Steamworks accessibility guidance also describes difficulty as a way to help players match the experience to their abilities and preferences.

Check the features that matter to you
Search for specific options rather than relying on a general “accessible” label. Depending on your needs, verify text size, subtitle controls, color alternatives, separate volume controls, input methods, save behavior, and timing requirements. Steam lets developers declare supported accessibility features on store pages, which can help narrow a search; confirm any important feature in the game’s settings and the listing for your platform.

Turn-based play gives you time to consider a move, but that alone does not establish that a game will work for every player. Check what happens after a failed mission, whether a difficulty change can help an ongoing campaign, and whether the game includes time-sensitive demands. These details vary by game and should be verified for the edition you intend to play.

XCOM 2: a documented example of deliberate squad tactics
XCOM 2 combines turn-based missions with a strategic campaign layer. The Feral Interactive Linux manual describes a system in which each soldier has two action points per turn, used for actions such as moving and attacking. The manual also covers cover, concealment, line of sight, hazards, and waypoint movement that can help a soldier avoid hazards or preserve concealment. These mechanics make decisions deliberate; they do not, by themselves, prove that the game is accessible for every player.
What the expansion adds—and what is not specified
War of the Chosen is downloadable content that requires XCOM 2. 2K says it adds “Advanced campaign options allow for finer adjustments to game length and difficulty.” Its support article does not enumerate those adjustments or establish that every setting can be changed mid-campaign. The article was published August 18, 2017, and updated October 24, 2025. See 2K’s War of the Chosen support page for the expansion details.

Check the platform-specific listing
Microsoft’s US Xbox store listing identifies Firaxis Games as the developer, 2K as the publisher, and lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It displays “4 Accessibility features,” but the captured listing does not name them. Do not infer which options those are from the count: check the current Xbox listing and in-game settings for the platform you use.

Other listings to treat with care
Zero Orders Tactics Under
The Steam listing for Zero Orders Tactics Under reports adjustable difficulty, save-anytime, subtitle options, color alternatives, custom volume controls, play without quick-time events, and mouse-only options. However, this listing is for downloadable content that requires the base game. It does not establish the base game’s availability or accessibility features, so verify those separately before treating the title as a fit.

Endless Tactics
Endless Tactics is a watchlist candidate, not a current recommendation: its Steam page lists adjustable difficulty and other accessibility features, but gives a Q4 2026 release window and says the game is not yet available. Because that window is in the future as of October 4, 2026, check the listing again for a release-status update.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical checklist for comparing options
- Confirm the exact game and edition. Check whether a feature belongs to the base game, an expansion, or downloadable content that requires another product.
- Read the platform’s feature information. Store pages may differ by platform, and a feature count does not tell you which options are included.
- Check difficulty timing. Find out whether you can change difficulty after starting and whether the game offers presets, individual controls, or both.
- Match settings to your needs. Verify the particular text, subtitle, color, audio, input, save, and timing options you rely on.
- Recheck availability. Release status and store listings can change; confirm them before deciding.
Support pages illustrate why the timing question matters, but the pages below do not establish which games their answers refer to. Square Enix describes changing difficulty through Options and Game Settings. Konami distinguishes combat difficulty, which it says can be changed later in Settings, from puzzle difficulty, which affects content and cannot be changed mid-playthrough. Treat these as general examples, not guidance for XCOM 2 or another named game: Square Enix Support and Konami Support.
