Rather than present a made-up historical winner list, this guide explains how to choose monitors for your room and listening distance, then uses two current ADAM Audio models as examples—not as proof of a 2023 ranking.
What makes a studio monitor the right choice?
A studio monitor is a reference tool for recording, mixing, and broadcast work. Its job is to help you judge the sound accurately; as Genelec puts it, “A reference monitor’s task is to reveal the truth of the source which is being monitored.” But the speaker alone does not determine what you hear. The room, speaker placement, and listening position all affect the result.

Start with the listening distance and the area where you need to hear reliably. Genelec’s guidance treats listening distance, optimal listening area, sound-pressure capability, and room volume as inputs to monitor selection—not as a simple woofer-size contest. Match output to distance
A monitor must be able to reach your working level at your listening position. Genelec summarizes the relationship plainly: “A larger listening distance requires a larger maximum sound output capacity in the monitoring product.” In free-field conditions, its selection guide says sound level drops 6 dB when distance doubles and increases 3 dB when amplifier power doubles. These are general acoustical relationships cited by the manufacturer, not a performance test of any particular monitor.

Account for the room
Room acoustics and placement can change the sound reaching your ears. Controlled directivity can help reduce room influence at the listening position, but no monitor specification can make the room irrelevant. Consider whether the speakers can be positioned appropriately on stands or a desk, and whether the room and listening area suit the system. The cited guidance establishes that these factors matter; it does not provide a complete placement protocol.
How to compare studio monitors
- Listening distance and coverage: Choose for the distance and listening area you actually use, not just the room’s floor area.
- Maximum output: Check the manufacturer’s stated output capability and its measurement conditions. Woofer diameter alone does not tell you how much usable output a system can deliver.
- Bass extension: Compare frequency-response figures only with their stated tolerance and measurement conditions. A low-frequency number is not a guarantee of the same bass response in your room.
- Placement and physical fit: Make sure the cabinets can be positioned sensibly, taking the desk or stands and nearby boundaries into account.
- Inputs: Confirm that the monitor’s inputs match your audio interface or other source.
- Subwoofer plans: Decide whether you need the system to reproduce low frequencies without a subwoofer or expect to add one. Integration, including the system crossover, matters.
ADAM Audio T7V and T8V: current specification examples
The following figures come from ADAM Audio’s product pages, accessed September 28, 2026. They are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements or evidence that either model ranked among the best in 2023. ADAM lists frequency response with a -6 dB tolerance and maximum SPL for a pair at 1 m.

On these stated specifications, the T8V reaches lower in frequency and has a higher stated pair SPL than the T7V. That is a trade-off to weigh against listening distance, room, placement, and intended working level—not a universal verdict that the larger model is better. When should you add a subwoofer?
A subwoofer can extend the system’s low-frequency reach and take on content below the system crossover, reducing the low-frequency workload on the main monitors. Without one, bass reproduction depends on the monitors’ low-frequency cutoff as well as the room’s acoustics. A subwoofer is not automatically necessary. Decide based on the low-frequency needs of your work and the system you can integrate in your room; if you add one, consider the crossover and how it works with the main monitors.
