Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If by “Stremio alternative” you mean software for organizing and streaming a personal media library, Jellyfin is the clearest free option: it runs on a server you control and streams your library to client devices. But Stremio and a media server do different jobs. Stremio is categorized as a streaming aggregator, while Jellyfin, Plex and Emby are media servers. Choose based on whether you want to find and play online sources or serve media you already host.
Is Stremio the same as a media server?
No. Stremio is described as a streaming aggregator; a personal media server organizes and streams a library hosted on a system you control. The distinction matters because a server is not automatically a like-for-like replacement for an aggregator. A 2026 comparison places Stremio in the aggregator category and Jellyfin, Plex and Emby in the media-server category; it also groups Kodi as a player and Navidrome as a music server. The comparison’s category overview is useful for orientation, not as proof of current pricing, performance or feature limits.

Stremio’s own June 9, 2026 post says the app’s currently available features will remain free, while describing supporter-only features as experimental. That statement concerns Stremio’s service and does not make it a self-hosted media server. Read Stremio’s announcement.
Best free media server for a personal library: Jellyfin
Jellyfin is the strongest fit when your goal is to manage and stream media you own or otherwise have stored in your library. Its project describes the software as free and says the server and official clients are free to download without fees. Jellyfin’s documentation calls it an alternative to proprietary Emby and Plex. Jellyfin’s official site lists movies, shows, music, live TV/DVR, books and photos among the media it supports.

- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
In practical terms, Jellyfin is server software, not a hosted account that keeps your library for you. The project says it does not run servers for users: you provide a computer or compatible NAS, store the media there, and use client devices to access it. Jellyfin documents administration topics such as networking, plugins and hardware acceleration, but support and performance depend on the host and configuration. Jellyfin’s documentation explains the server-and-client model and links to setup and administration guidance.
How the alternatives differ
| Software | Best understood as | What the available evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Jellyfin | Self-hosted personal media server | Free software with free official clients; handles a range of personal media types. Jellyfin |
| Plex | Personal media server | Jellyfin’s documentation identifies Plex as proprietary. Current plan names, prices and feature gates are not established here. Jellyfin documentation |
| Emby | Personal media server | Jellyfin’s documentation identifies Emby as proprietary. Current plan names, prices and feature gates are not established here. Jellyfin documentation |
| Kodi | Local player or media-center interface | The 2026 comparison distinguishes Kodi from media servers; consider it if you want a player rather than a server for streaming a library to clients. Category overview |
| Navidrome | Music server | The comparison identifies it as music-focused, not a general video-server replacement. Category overview |
The distinctions are more useful than a single “best” ranking: Jellyfin is the supported recommendation for a no-fee server, while Kodi, Navidrome and Stremio address different needs. Plex and Emby belong in a server comparison, but check their own current product pages for pricing and paid-feature details before choosing; the sources cited here do not establish those terms.

Can you run Jellyfin on a computer or NAS you already own?
Possibly. Jellyfin’s documentation provides installation paths for Windows, macOS, Debian/Ubuntu and other Linux distributions, Docker, Kubernetes and Podman, Synology, and TrueNAS SCALE. That breadth means you can investigate an existing computer or supported NAS before buying dedicated hardware. An available installer does not guarantee that a particular device will perform well with your library or intended use. Check Jellyfin’s installation documentation for the applicable path.

Before setup, consider the system’s storage, whether it can stay powered when you want access, and whether you are comfortable maintaining a server and configuring network access. Requirements and performance vary with the machine, media and configuration; consult Jellyfin’s guidance on networking and hardware acceleration rather than assuming every feature works on every host. If your current storage is insufficient, additional storage may be useful, but a new drive is not a prerequisite for everyone.

Choose by the job you need done
- You want a free server for a personal library: Start with Jellyfin, whose project says the server and official clients are free to download.
- You want to organize and stream a library but prefer to compare proprietary options: Compare Plex and Emby as server alternatives, then confirm their current prices and feature limits directly with their providers.
- You mainly want a local media-center player: Kodi may fit that role better than a server.
- Your library is music only: Consider a music-server category such as Navidrome rather than a general video-server replacement.
- You want to discover or play online sources through an aggregator: Stremio is a different category from self-hosted servers, so compare services by that use rather than treating server software as a direct substitute.
