The Best Retro Game Controllers for PC, Switch, and Modern Consoles

The SN30 Pro is the compact retro all-rounder; the Pro 2 suits mixed modern and classic libraries; the 8BitDo 64 targets N64; and the SN30 2.4G NT is for original SNES/SFC hardware.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most people, the 8BitDo SN30 Pro is the best starting point for retro games on a PC or Switch: it keeps a compact, SNES-inspired shape while adding clickable analog sticks, motion controls, rumble, wireless Bluetooth, rechargeable power, and USB-C. Choose the 8BitDo Pro 2 instead if you want a conventional dual-stick layout, Hall Effect joysticks, rear buttons, and saved profiles. For a true N64 layout, use the 8BitDo 64; for an original SNES or Super Famicom, use the SN30 2.4G NT with its bundled receiver.

“Modern consoles” is not a single compatibility category. Support depends on the exact controller variant, firmware, operating-system version, connection method, and console model. The documented choices below cover PC, SteamOS, Switch/Switch 2 and selected related devices; they do not establish broad PlayStation or Xbox support.

Compact SNES-style pads

A compact, D-pad-first controller suits platformers, shoot-’em-ups, puzzle games and most 8- and 16-bit libraries. The SN30 Pro preserves that familiar arrangement while adding the controls required by modern software. Its small footprint is easy to pack and keeps the face buttons and D-pad close together, but it offers less palm support than a full-size gamepad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This shape is especially useful for games where the D-pad does most of the work: classic Mario, Mega Man, Castlevania, fighting games and menu-heavy emulators. The analog sticks are available when a game needs them, but they do not force your thumbs into the wider spacing of a conventional modern pad. If you mainly play 2D software, that can feel more natural than a large dual-stick controller.

Full dual-stick layouts

A fuller controller is easier to use for games that expect two analog sticks, triggers and a wider grip. The Pro 2 keeps a retro-inspired face design but follows a conventional modern layout. It is the safer choice when one controller must cover classic games, 3D platformers, action games and current PC releases.

The additional rear buttons also give the Pro 2 a practical advantage in games that use frequent shoulder-button combinations. Three custom profiles let you save different mappings instead of changing controls every time you switch from an emulator to a modern game. Those features matter more for a mixed library than the shell color or cosmetic retro detailing.

N64-specific layouts

N64 games were built around an unusual three-pronged controller and a central analog stick. A dedicated N64-style pad can make the original button positions feel correct, especially for collections that preserve the original control scheme. That specialization is also why the 8BitDo 64 is a poor universal replacement for a standard dual-stick controller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check which 8BitDo 64 version you are buying. The Bluetooth model is aimed at PC, Switch, Switch 2, Android and Analogue 3D, while the 2.4G model uses a dongle for original N64 hardware and gives up Switch and Android compatibility. The connection method is therefore part of the layout decision, not an interchangeable accessory choice.

What to verify before buying

Exact platform and model

Read the manufacturer’s compatibility list for the exact model and connection type. “Switch compatible” does not prove compatibility with a PlayStation or Xbox console, and a Bluetooth edition may support a different set of systems than a 2.4G edition. Switch and Switch 2 support can also depend on firmware and system software.

Check the operating-system minimums as well. The Pro 2 listing specifies Windows 10 version 1903, SteamOS 3.7.13 and Switch 2 system version 20.1.1. Other models list their own requirements. A controller can be perfectly functional yet fail to pair with an older computer or console software version that falls below the stated minimum.

Connection type

  • Bluetooth: convenient for PCs, mobile devices and supported consoles, but pairing and feature support vary by platform.
  • USB: useful when wireless pairing is unavailable or when you want a direct PC connection. It is also the documented Windows 10 and Switch connection for the SN30 2.4G NT.
  • Product-specific 2.4G receiver: intended for the console and receiver supplied with that controller. Do not assume a receiver from another product family will work.

For troubleshooting, USB is the best first test because it removes wireless pairing, radio interference and the wrong Bluetooth mode from the equation. Once the controller is recognized over cable, switch to the documented wireless mode for your system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Features that matter in practice

Clickable sticks, motion sensing, rumble, remapping, profiles, rear buttons and Hall Effect components can matter more than a retro shell. Check whether the console supports each feature: a controller can connect successfully while offering only standard vibration or fewer inputs.

Hall Effect joysticks are a hardware feature listed for the Pro 2; they should not be treated as proof that every game or platform exposes a different control scheme. Likewise, motion controls are listed for Switch, but the same behavior is not guaranteed on every PC, mobile or Apple configuration. Treat each feature as platform-specific until the product page confirms it.

Original hardware versus modern hardware

An original-console controller normally needs the correct hardware receiver. A Bluetooth pad made for Switch or PC is not automatically an SNES or N64 controller for original hardware. Confirm the console variant, receiver type and whether the package includes that receiver.

Match features to the games you actually play

For 2D platformers, puzzle games and arcade shooters, prioritize a precise D-pad, comfortable face-button spacing and a compact shape. The SN30 Pro is designed around that use case while still offering sticks, rumble, motion and modern system buttons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For 3D platformers, first-person games and action titles, a full dual-stick body reduces the compromise of reaching across a small shell. The Pro 2 is the more flexible option because it adds Hall Effect joysticks, rear buttons and profiles without abandoning a familiar face-button arrangement.

For N64 collections, the question is not which controller has the most features but whether the original button geometry feels right. The 8BitDo 64 is sensible when that arrangement is the priority. If you also play broad PC or Switch libraries, keep a standard dual-stick pad available rather than expecting the N64 layout to cover everything.

8BitDo SN30 Pro: the compact all-rounder

The SN30 Pro Bluetooth Gamepad is the strongest fit when retro shape and modern functionality are equally important. It has an SNES-inspired silhouette and D-pad-first feel, but adds clickable analog sticks, rumble, motion controls, wireless Bluetooth, a rechargeable battery, home and screenshot buttons, and USB-C charging and wired play.

8BitDo lists support for Switch and Switch 2, Windows, SteamOS, Android, Apple platforms and Raspberry Pi. The controller supports X-input or D-input over Bluetooth and can also be used over USB. The official page provides the minimum operating-system versions and firmware information; check those requirements for the device you actually intend to use rather than assuming every listed feature behaves identically on every platform.

Who should choose it

  • Players whose libraries are mainly 2D games and classic console emulation.
  • Anyone who wants a small controller for a laptop, handheld PC or travel kit.
  • Switch owners who want analog sticks and motion controls without abandoning a retro face layout.
  • Buyers who want one inexpensive-to-carry pad rather than a separate original-console and modern-console controller.

Where it is less suitable

The compact body gives you less grip and spacing than a full-size pad. If a game relies heavily on dual-stick aiming, analog triggers or a broad modern layout, the Pro 2 is the more natural fit. The SN30 Pro’s compatibility list also should not be read as a promise of PlayStation or Xbox support.

8BitDo Pro 2: the fuller modern layout

The Pro 2 Bluetooth Gamepad is the choice for mixed-era gaming. It has Hall Effect joysticks, two assignable rear buttons, three custom profiles and a four-way mode switch for Switch, Android, D-input and X-input. It also supports motion controls for Switch, Bluetooth and USB-C connections, and is listed for Windows, Switch/Switch 2, SteamOS, Android, Apple platforms and Raspberry Pi.

The official requirements include Windows 10 version 1903, SteamOS 3.7.13 and Switch 2 system version 20.1.1. 8BitDo says Switch 2 compatibility requires a firmware update, so update the controller before troubleshooting pairing or input problems.

Important Switch limitations

On Switch, the Pro 2 does not provide HD Rumble or amiibo scanning. Its vibration is standard rumble rather than Nintendo’s HD Rumble system. It can still be a practical Switch controller, but those missing functions matter if you expect first-party controller behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should choose it

  • Players who alternate between retro games and current PC or console-style games.
  • People who want rear-button assignments or multiple saved control profiles.
  • Users who prefer a conventional grip and dual-stick spacing over a compact SNES pad.
  • Steam users who want a controller explicitly listed on 8BitDo’s Steam compatibility page.

8BitDo 64: buy it for N64 games

The 8BitDo 64 is a specialist controller, not a general replacement. Tom’s Guide’s review, published May 21, 2026, reports that the Bluetooth version works with PC, Switch, Switch 2, Android and Analogue 3D. A separate 2.4G version connects to an original N64 through a dongle, but that version gives up Switch and Android compatibility.

The same review reports no PS5 or Xbox compatibility and notes that the N64-oriented layout is less suitable for general modern gaming. Those findings come from one reviewer’s hands-on testing, so treat them as practical review evidence rather than a universal performance guarantee. Choose this model when the N64 button arrangement is the reason you are buying a controller; choose the SN30 Pro or Pro 2 when broad game coverage matters more.

8BitDo SN30 2.4G NT: for an original SNES or SFC

The SN30 2.4G NT is a hardware-specific controller for an original SNES or Super Famicom. It includes the receiver required by that console. The support FAQ distinguishes it from the SN30 2.4G made for NES/SFC/SNES Classic systems.

The FAQ says the SN30 2.4G NT can operate on Windows 10 and Switch when connected by USB cable. It cannot use other 8BitDo receivers or adapters. Therefore, do not buy this model expecting its bundled receiver to work with another console, or expecting its wireless mode to replace a Bluetooth controller for modern systems.

PC and Steam setup

Use the correct mode and firmware

  1. Identify the controller variant and read its current manufacturer compatibility page.
  2. Install the manufacturer’s firmware update when the page specifies one for your operating system or console. This is especially important for Pro 2 use with Switch 2.
  3. For a first test, connect by USB. Wired operation removes Bluetooth pairing as a variable and confirms that the controller is detected.
  4. For wireless play, select the controller’s documented Bluetooth mode: the SN30 Pro supports X-input or D-input, while the Pro 2 provides X-input, D-input, Android and Switch positions on its mode switch.
  5. Launch a game only after the operating system sees the controller. If the game still shows incorrect buttons, change the input mode or let Steam Input translate the device.

Steam Input

8BitDo’s Steam compatibility page lists the Pro 2 and other named controllers as compatible and specifies firmware requirements for some models. It says listed controllers’ features are supported through Steam Input and that no third-party drivers are needed. Limit this expectation to the products and firmware versions actually listed on that page.

Switch and Switch 2 checks

  1. Confirm that your exact model and firmware appear on the manufacturer’s Switch or Switch 2 compatibility list.
  2. Update the controller before pairing if the product page requires it.
  3. Use USB when you need a direct connection or when Bluetooth pairing is unreliable.
  4. Set expectations for missing platform features: the Pro 2 does not offer HD Rumble or amiibo scanning on Switch.
  5. Do not use successful pairing as evidence that motion controls, vibration and every system button will behave identically to a Nintendo controller.

Do not infer PlayStation or Xbox support from successful Switch pairing. The available documentation does not provide a complete compatibility survey for those consoles; the 8BitDo 64 review specifically reports that it does not work with PS5 or Xbox.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Original-console setup

  1. Match the controller to the exact original console: the SN30 2.4G NT is for original SNES/SFC hardware.
  2. Use the receiver supplied with that controller. Other 8BitDo receivers and adapters are not supported by the SN30 2.4G NT.
  3. If you are using Windows 10 or Switch with the SN30 2.4G NT, connect it by USB as described in the support FAQ; do not expect the original-console receiver to provide those modern-device connections.
  4. For N64 hardware, select the 8BitDo 64 2.4G edition and its dongle rather than the Bluetooth edition, which is documented for modern devices instead.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The controller pairs but buttons are wrong on PC

Switch to the input mode expected by the game or launcher. The SN30 Pro offers X-input and D-input over Bluetooth; the Pro 2’s mode switch provides X-input and D-input positions. Steam Input can translate supported controllers, but firmware and the selected mode still matter.

Switch 2 does not recognize the controller

Check the exact Switch 2 system requirement and install the controller firmware update specified by 8BitDo. Reconnect by USB after updating, then retry wireless pairing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rumble or motion controls are missing

Feature support is platform-specific. The Pro 2’s Switch connection uses standard vibration rather than HD Rumble and cannot scan amiibo. Motion controls are listed for Switch, but do not assume that every PC, mobile or Apple configuration exposes them.

The original console does not respond

Verify that you bought the correct original-console model and are using its bundled receiver. The SN30 2.4G NT is not interchangeable with other 8BitDo receiver families.

You want to use the controller on PS5 or Xbox

Do not assume compatibility. The documented material does not establish broad support for those platforms, and the 8BitDo 64 review specifically says it is not compatible with PS5 or Xbox. Check the exact manufacturer listing before purchase.

Price, stock and version checks

Prices and stock vary by region and retailer, and the product pages link to shopping listings rather than guaranteeing a current price. Before ordering, compare the exact model name, connection type and included accessories. A listing that says “8BitDo 64” may refer to the Bluetooth or 2.4G edition, which have materially different compatibility. Likewise, make sure an SN30 listing is the SN30 Pro Bluetooth model or the SN30 2.4G NT, not a similarly named product for a different original console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the return policy if you need a particular D-pad feel or grip size. Compatibility can be technically correct while the layout is uncomfortable for your hands or poorly suited to a game’s analog controls. Buying from a listing with clear firmware and model information is more useful than choosing solely by the lowest displayed price.

Which one should you buy?

Your priority Pick Reason
Mostly SNES-era, arcade or 2D games on PC or Switch SN30 Pro Compact D-pad-first shape with sticks, motion, rumble and modern buttons
One controller for retro and current dual-stick games Pro 2 Fuller grip, Hall Effect joysticks, rear buttons and three profiles
Authentic N64-style controls 8BitDo 64 Specialized layout; select Bluetooth or 2.4G according to the target hardware
Original SNES or Super Famicom SN30 2.4G NT Bundled, console-specific receiver

Before ordering, verify the regional listing, exact variant, current firmware requirement, connection method and target system. Prices, stock and retailer availability change, and the documented specifications do not establish a universal winner for every modern console. The best choice is the one whose layout matches your games and whose compatibility list names your hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which controller works with both PC and Switch?

The SN30 Pro and Pro 2 are both listed for Windows and Switch/Switch 2, with Bluetooth and USB connection options. Check the current firmware and minimum system versions for your exact model before pairing.

Is the SN30 Pro better than the Pro 2 for retro games?

Choose the SN30 Pro for a compact, D-pad-first SNES shape and mostly 2D games. Choose the Pro 2 for a fuller grip, dual-stick games, Hall Effect joysticks, rear buttons and three profiles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Pro 2 have HD Rumble or amiibo support on Switch?

No. 8BitDo states that Pro 2 Switch compatibility excludes HD Rumble and amiibo scanning; its vibration is standard rumble.

Which 8BitDo 64 version works with an original N64?

The 2.4G version is the one documented for original N64 hardware through its dongle. The Bluetooth version targets PC, Switch, Switch 2, Android and Analogue 3D instead.

Can the SN30 2.4G NT use another 8BitDo receiver?

No. Its support FAQ says it requires the bundled SNES receiver and cannot use other 8BitDo receivers or adapters.

Do I need third-party drivers for these controllers on Steam?

8BitDo’s Steam compatibility page says listed controllers use Steam Input and do not need third-party drivers. Confirm that your specific model and firmware appear on that list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will these controllers work on PS5 or Xbox?

Do not assume so. The listed compatibility information does not establish broad PlayStation or Xbox support, and the 8BitDo 64 review specifically reports no PS5 or Xbox compatibility.

Why does a controller connect but lack rumble or motion controls?

Connection and feature support are separate. Confirm the platform, selected input mode, firmware and product limitations. On Switch, the Pro 2 provides standard vibration rather than HD Rumble; motion support is specifically listed for Switch.

The Bottom Line

The SN30 Pro is the best compact retro all-rounder for supported PC and Switch setups. The Pro 2 is the stronger one-controller choice for mixed retro and modern games, while the 8BitDo 64 and SN30 2.4G NT are specialist products for N64 and original SNES/SFC hardware. Match the exact variant, receiver, firmware and platform before buying.
