The Best PC Settings for Smooth 1440p OLED Gaming

Use native 2560×1440, select the highest refresh rate your display connection supports, enable VRR in the monitor and GPU software, and tune each game to your PC’s sustained frame rate.

For smooth 1440p OLED gaming, set the PC to the monitor’s native 2560×1440 resolution, choose the highest refresh rate supported by the monitor and connection, and enable variable refresh rate (VRR) in both the display and graphics software. Then tune each game’s settings to the frame rate your PC can sustain. A high refresh rate does not guarantee high frame rates, and there is no single graphics preset or frame cap that works best for every game and system.

Set up the monitor and Windows first

Start with the display’s own manual: supported refresh rates and VRR can depend on whether you use DisplayPort or HDMI, and on the selected signal format. There is no universally best port for every monitor. Make sure the PC is connected to an input that supports the resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR combination you want. RTINGS’ testing methodology treats maximum refresh at 8-bit and 10-bit signal depth separately, because bandwidth limits can affect the available 10-bit modes: RTINGS refresh-rate testing.

  1. Open Windows Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Select the OLED monitor, set its display resolution to 2560 × 1440, and choose the highest refresh rate offered.
  3. Check the monitor’s on-screen menu and enable its VRR, Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync or G-SYNC-compatible control, as applicable.

If the maximum refresh rate is missing, check the monitor input, cable path, graphics driver and selected signal mode before assuming the panel is limited. If enabling HDR changes the available refresh rates or color formats, treat it as a configuration or bandwidth constraint and consult the monitor and GPU specifications.

Enable VRR in the graphics software

VRR synchronizes display refresh with the frames the GPU produces, helping reduce tearing and stutter when frame delivery varies. It does not increase GPU performance or make a game render more frames. The monitor’s own VRR control must also be active.

NVIDIA GeForce

In NVIDIA Control Panel, open Display > Set up G-SYNC and enable G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible for the display if the option is available. In Manage 3D settings, set Monitor Technology to G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible where offered, and select the highest available refresh rate. NVIDIA’s compatibility requirements differ between G-SYNC and G-SYNC Compatible displays, so availability depends on the monitor and GPU combination. See NVIDIA Control Panel Help: Variable Refresh Rate.

AMD Radeon

In AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, enable AMD FreeSync for the compatible display. The exact controls can vary with software version and display. AMD describes FreeSync as using standards such as DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync to provide dynamic refresh rates; its FreeSync tiers and low-framerate compensation criteria do not guarantee that every monitor supports every mode. Check the display’s specifications and AMD’s FreeSync enablement FAQ.

Acer Predator 26.5in QHD 2560x1440 QD-OLED 240Hz Gaming Monitor X27U W1
  • OLED Makes All The Difference: With a display of these mammoth-like proportions, everything must look good. The WQHD quantum dot OLED display with true 10Bit is obligated to offer stunning contrast, cinematic color. Image retention-refresh keeps the images from sticking.
  • AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
  • Fast and Furious: If you want seamless gameplay at ridiculous levels of speed, you’ve come to the right place. With an 240Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms (G to G) response time, your sessions will be fluid, unbroken and unmatched – with little to no ghosting.
  • Brilliant Colors: With the DCI-P3 99% color gamut, Delta E<2, and HDR10, colors are practically bursting out of the screen. Enjoy the best imagery your games have to offer!
  • Center of Vision: At 26.5-inches, the X27U is directly in your field of view. Considered a hallmark of eSports tournaments, this is the perfect size to gain an edge over your opponents. The addition of a ZeroFrame design also removes the bezels – giving you have even more visibly over every match and every movement your rivals make.

Tune game settings for the frame rate you can sustain

Keep the game at native 2560×1440 when you want the panel’s native-resolution image. If the PC cannot sustain your desired frame rate, lower the graphics options that are most demanding in that game rather than expecting the monitor’s refresh-rate setting to solve the performance limit. The useful target is the frame rate the system can deliver consistently in the game you play, not simply the number printed on the monitor box.

Refresh rate, frame rate and connection bandwidth are separate constraints: the monitor must support the mode, the connection must carry its resolution and signal format, and the GPU must render frames. For context, 240Hz allows about 4.17 milliseconds per refresh; RTINGS calculates a theoretical minimum input lag of 2.08 milliseconds at that refresh rate. That is a technical illustration, not a promise of end-to-end system latency or a guaranteed gaming result. See RTINGS: What To Look For In A Gaming Monitor.

There is no universally established best FPS cap, V-Sync combination, HDR preset or graphics-quality preset for all games and PCs. Treat those as game- and system-specific choices rather than fixed OLED settings. VRR helps smooth changes in frame timing within the supported range; it cannot compensate for performance the GPU does not deliver.

Know the OLED-specific VRR trade-off

Some OLED monitors can show VRR flicker as frame rates change, particularly in dark scenes. RTINGS reports this behavior on both the ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27ACDNG and the LG 27GX790A-B. If flicker appears, first check for current monitor firmware and graphics drivers and compare the affected game with other content. Disabling VRR can help determine whether it is involved, but may bring back tearing or stutter; the reviewed evidence does not establish one fix for every OLED model.

The ASUS review also notes that ambient light raises the model’s black levels, despite strong dark-room image quality. Room lighting and reflections therefore matter alongside refresh rate and response behavior when evaluating an OLED setup.

What two 1440p OLED examples show

Monitor Published specifications Reported behavior
ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27ACDNG 27-inch, 2560×1440 QD-OLED; 360Hz; DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1; VRR. RTINGS review from 2025, with 2026 test-bench updates. RTINGS describes crisp motion and low input lag, but reports distracting VRR flicker with changing frame rates and raised black levels in bright rooms.
LG 27GX790A-B 27-inch, 2560×1440 OLED; 480Hz. RTINGS review. RTINGS reports VRR flicker as frame rates change.

These examples illustrate why a higher refresh ceiling and broad VRR support do not settle every setup question. Compare the native resolution and size, refresh rate available over your chosen connection, 10-bit HDR support at that rate, VRR compatibility and behavior, and bright-room performance. The two reviews are model-specific evidence, not proof that either monitor—or any one setting—is best for every player.
