If you mainly want to jot something down and find it later, you do not need to turn note-taking into a personal knowledge-management project. Simplenote is the clearest fit for lightweight, text-first notes; Google Keep is worth considering for quick capture; Joplin suits people who want more control and privacy options; and Notion makes more sense when notes need to live in a shared, structured workspace. These are workflow-based recommendations, not results from a head-to-head usability test.
Choose the amount of upkeep you actually want
Obsidian can support an interconnected knowledge system, but that capability is optional—and maintaining links, folders, templates, or plugins can feel like work of its own. If your usual notes are reminders, snippets, lists, or meeting details, start with the simplest app that can capture and retrieve them reliably.

The important distinction is not which app has the longest feature list. It is whether you want a low-friction place for personal notes, more control over files and privacy, or a system other people can use with you.

| App | Best fit | What its product information establishes | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simplenote | Text-first notes and quick capture across devices | Real-time syncing, tags, search, sharing and publishing, revision history, Markdown, and apps for iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, Linux, and the web. Its company says the apps, backups, syncing, and sharing are free. Simplenote | The official page does not establish support for rich attachments or advanced knowledge structures. Check the app against any such needs. |
| Google Keep | Potentially fast capture, particularly if you already use Google services | The title-specific search result describes capture using text, voice, camera, drawing, and lists. Google Keep | Those feature details were available in a search-result excerpt rather than an opened official product page, so verify that the current app supports the capture methods you need. |
| Joplin | People who want more control, rich content, privacy features, or extensibility | Open-source software with multimedia notes, a browser clipper, plugins, rich-text and Markdown editors, multiple synchronization services, desktop and mobile apps, an open format, and end-to-end encryption. Joplin | Choosing plugins and a synchronization service may mean more setup than a minimal notes app; that is a practical inference from its options, not a measured usability finding. |
| Notion | Shared notes, structured information, and team workflows | Its product positioning emphasizes team knowledge, finding answers, and task automation, with a free entry point. Notion | A broader workspace may be more than a solo scratchpad needs. That is a fit judgment, not a tested comparison. |
Which app fits your notes?
Simplenote: keep text notes simple
Simplenote is the most straightforward starting point if your notes are mostly words and you want them available on multiple devices. Tags and search give you ways to retrieve notes without requiring an elaborate network of links. Revision history can also help when you need to revisit an earlier version.
#1 Best Overall
Its official feature list includes Markdown, sharing, and publishing as well as syncing and search. The company says those core services and its apps are free. If you rely on images, audio, or other rich attachments, confirm that the current app meets your needs; the cited product page does not establish that capability.
Google Keep: consider it for quick capture
Keep is a candidate if you value getting a thought down more than building a deep archive, especially if you already use Google services. The title-specific search result describes text, voice, camera, drawing, and list capture. Because those specifics were not verified on an opened official product page, treat them as a starting point for checking the current app rather than a guaranteed feature checklist.

Joplin: choose control over minimal setup
Joplin offers a broader set of choices: multimedia notes, a web clipper, plugins, two editor styles, and several synchronization options. Its official site also describes it as open source, says it uses an open format, and lists end-to-end encryption. That combination may suit someone who wants more control or richer notes without adopting a team workspace.
The trade-off is that flexibility comes with decisions: which sync service to use, whether to add plugins, and which editor fits your habits. If the goal is to avoid configuring a system, those choices may be a reason to prefer a simpler app.

Notion: use it when notes are part of shared work
Notion is positioned as a team workspace for knowledge, answers, and task automation, and it has a free entry point. It is the stronger candidate here if notes need to be shared or organized as part of a broader work system. For someone who only wants a personal place to jot things down, that wider scope may be unnecessary.
A practical way to decide
- List what you actually capture. If it is mostly text, begin with Simplenote. If you need richer notes and more control, look at Joplin. If capture methods such as voice or camera matter, check whether Keep currently supports your workflow.
- Try retrieval, not just writing. Put in a few representative notes, then see whether search, tags, or the app’s organizational tools help you find them again without extra maintenance.
- Check your devices and sync needs. Simplenote lists apps across major desktop and mobile platforms plus browser access; Joplin lists desktop and mobile apps and multiple sync services. Confirm current availability and behavior on the devices you use.
- Decide whether collaboration is essential. If other people need to work with your notes or the notes belong inside a shared system, Notion’s team-workspace focus may justify its broader scope.
- Set a limit on setup. Before adding folders, templates, links, or plugins, ask whether they solve a problem you already have. If a feature does not make capture or retrieval easier for you, leave it unused.
