Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →No. Being on an internal network means a system may be reachable; it does not mean the user, device, or application is allowed to use it. A secure design checks identity, authorizes the requested resource and action, limits permissions to what is needed, and records activity. Network segmentation helps restrict communication paths, but it does not replace those checks.
What “inside the network” actually tells you
An internal IP address, VPN connection, corporate device, VLAN, or container boundary may affect whether traffic can reach a service. None of these facts alone establishes who is making a request or what that caller may do.

It helps to separate five stages:
- Path: A network route exists between the caller and the service. This is reachability, not permission.
- Identity: Authentication establishes the identity of a user, workload, or device.
- Policy: Authorization decides whether that identity may access a particular resource or perform a particular action.
- Action: Least privilege limits the permitted operation and its scope.
- Evidence: Logs and monitoring give operators information to review activity and respond to suspicious behavior.
NIST’s SP 800-207, Zero Trust Architecture, published in August 2020, says: “Zero trust assumes there is no implicit trust granted to assets or user accounts based solely on their physical or network location (i.e., local area networks versus the internet) or based on asset ownership (enterprise or personally owned).” In the same document, NIST treats authentication and authorization for both the subject and device as separate functions performed before a session to an enterprise resource is established.
Reachability, authentication, and authorization are different controls
Reachability: can traffic get there?
Routing and firewall rules determine whether a request can travel from one system or zone to another. A successful connection answers a network question: is there a path? It does not answer whether the caller is a known identity or whether the request is permitted.

Authentication: who or what is calling?
Authentication verifies an identity, such as a person signing in or a service presenting credentials. For sensitive access, an organization may also need to establish the identity or condition of the device. A VPN can help establish a protected connection to an organization’s network, but network membership should not stand in for authenticating the caller to the application or resource.
Authorization: may that identity perform this action?
Authorization evaluates a request against policy: for example, whether a particular user may read a record, change a configuration, or administer a service. A user can authenticate successfully and still lack permission for the requested action. NIST’s resource-focused approach treats assets, services, workflows, and accounts—not network segments—as the primary objects to protect.
Least privilege: how much access is necessary?
Least privilege narrows permissions to the scope and duration needed for a task. The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s Draft Revised Telecommunications Security Code of Practice, 2026 version 11, recommends limiting permissions and access to what is necessary, securely managing credentials, and revoking credentials when no longer needed. This is draft guidance for public telecommunications providers, not universal law or a general compliance checklist for every organization.

Do internal APIs and services still need authentication?
Yes. Internal location does not show that a caller is authorized, so internal APIs and service-to-service requests need controls at the application or resource boundary. The UK draft code’s recommendations for its regulated-provider audience include minimizing API exposure, using recognized authentication for authorized users and applications, restricting endpoints by role and permission, and logging and monitoring activity. For private APIs, it suggests considering mutual authentication such as mTLS alongside API-layer authentication.
These controls answer different questions. Mutual TLS can authenticate communicating systems and protect the connection; API-layer policy can determine which identity may invoke a specific endpoint and operation. Neither a private address nor an encrypted connection by itself grants permission to every API function.
What segmentation can—and cannot—do
Segmentation restricts which systems or network zones can communicate. It can reduce unnecessary paths and limit how far an incident can spread. Restricting communication to management planes is one example supported by the UK draft code. But segmentation does not prove the identity of every reachable caller, or determine what that caller is allowed to do after reaching a service.

NIST’s resource-focused model supports treating segmentation as one layer of defense, not the authorization boundary by itself. A VLAN, firewall rule, container network, or private subnet may constrain exposure while leaving application permissions to be enforced separately. The UK draft also cautions its intended audience against treating containers as a security boundary between trust domains when the containers were not designed to serve that function.
A practical way to review an internal access path
For each important user-to-service or service-to-service flow, check the path, identity, policy, privilege, and evidence as distinct parts of the design:
- Path: Which systems can initiate communication, and is the route limited to what the service needs?
- Identity: How does the service authenticate the user, workload, or device? Are credentials handled securely and retired when no longer needed?
- Policy: Does authorization apply to the specific resource and requested action, rather than relying on network location or a broad “internal” role?
- Privilege: Are permissions limited to necessary tasks? For security-critical administrative accounts, the UK draft recommends MFA; it also includes two-person approval for significant or manual changes.
- Evidence: Are access and administrative actions logged and monitored in a way that supports review and response?
These are review questions, not a claim that following one checklist or deploying one architecture automatically makes a system secure or compliant. NIST SP 800-207 provides a conceptual foundation; the UK code remains draft guidance directed at public telecommunications providers.

What an internal exposure advisory illustrates
A February 28, 2024 SingCERT bulletin describes a specific AnythingLLM scenario: an attacker granted manager or admin permission could use link scraping to reach internally resolving IP addresses of services on the same network. The advisory says the attacker would also need to guess those internal IPs; it notes that the link collector could not set headers or access services through zero-authentication curl in that scenario.
This is a bounded example of why application permissions and network reachability are separate questions. It does not establish that all internal services are exposed, or that the described condition applies to every AnythingLLM version.
