The Best NAS and Mini PCs for a Jellyfin Media Server

An Intel N100-class mini PC is a practical Jellyfin starting point for many builds; an all-in-one NAS can work if its software, processor, and hardware acceleration suit your playback needs.

For most people building a Jellyfin server, the best starting point is an Intel N100-class mini PC paired with storage sized for the media library. It gives Jellyfin a supported integrated-graphics platform for hardware-accelerated video work, while letting you choose storage independently. Pick an all-in-one NAS instead when consolidating drives and server duties matters more than installation simplicity—but check its processor, media-engine support, and Jellyfin installation route before buying.

There is no evidence here for a universal device winner, stream-count ranking, or price comparison. The right choice depends chiefly on whether your clients can play your files directly or the server must transcode them.

Choose by playback workload, not by the word “NAS”

Jellyfin can either send a compatible file to a playback device as-is or transform it to meet that device’s format, bandwidth, subtitle, or display needs. The more video processing required, the more important the server’s hardware acceleration becomes.

  • Direct Play: The client receives the original file without transcoding, creating almost no additional server load.
  • Remux: Jellyfin changes the container while leaving the audio and video streams unchanged.
  • Direct Stream: Jellyfin transcodes the audio while leaving the video untouched.
  • Video transcode: Jellyfin converts the video, the most demanding of these paths for the server.

Subtitle burn-in and HDR-to-SDR tone-mapping can also raise the processing burden. If your clients usually support your media formats and you rarely need those operations, server demands may be lower. If you frequently convert video, Jellyfin strongly recommends a GPU; software decoding of HEVC, VP9, or AV1 can be demanding, and Jellyfin recommends HEVC 10-bit hardware decoding capability. See the project’s transcoding overview.

Best fit for most builds: Intel N100-class mini PC

Jellyfin lists Intel N100 among its integrated-graphics server recommendations and includes Intel 12th-generation-or-newer N-series platforms among low-power options. That makes an N100-class mini PC a sensible starting category—not a tested universal winner or a guarantee that every model is suitable.

Before choosing a particular mini PC, confirm its RAM, cooling, network connection, and storage options. Jellyfin’s general integrated-graphics recommendation is 8GB of system RAM. A mini PC may not have enough internal capacity for a media library, so plan to keep media on a separate NAS, external drive, or other storage system if needed. The server and library storage do not have to be in the same enclosure.

This approach suits people who want a dedicated Jellyfin host with integrated graphics and are comfortable managing media storage separately. The exact performance depends on the device, drivers, Jellyfin software, and workload; the available guidance does not establish stream counts or comparative device results. Review Jellyfin’s hardware-selection guidance when comparing systems.

When an all-in-one NAS makes sense

A NAS can put the media library and Jellyfin server in one appliance, with drive bays and network connections designed around shared storage. That convenience does not mean every NAS is a good Jellyfin host. Jellyfin cautions that appliance software environments can make third-party apps harder to install, and some NAS processors are too weak for acceptable video transcoding. Validate both the installation method and the hardware acceleration path for the particular model and workload.

Example: QNAP TS-464

QNAP’s product page lists the TS-464 with an Intel Celeron N5095, four drive bays, and two 2.5GbE ports. Those are manufacturer-listed hardware features, not evidence of Jellyfin compatibility or a certain number of simultaneous streams. Treat it as a NAS example to investigate, not a Jellyfin-endorsed pick. Confirm current installation instructions, operating-system support, driver access or device passthrough, and acceleration support before relying on it for video conversion. QNAP TS-464 product details.

NAS operating-system checks

Jellyfin’s installation documentation identifies TrueNAS SCALE as Linux-based and officially supported, while noting that its app is not maintained by the Jellyfin team. FreeBSD and derivatives such as TrueNAS CORE are not supported by Jellyfin because .NET is not officially compatible with those platforms. Jellyfin also says it generally does not recommend running Jellyfin on Synology devices; consult its Synology installation guidance and the broader installation documentation before selecting an appliance.

What hardware acceleration actually requires

Jellyfin uses a modified FFmpeg build called jellyfin-ffmpeg to access fixed-function codecs, video processors, and GPU compute interfaces. The project recommends using its Jellyfin-specific FFmpeg build. Its documented acceleration methods include Intel Quick Sync Video, NVIDIA NVDEC/NVENC, AMD AMF, Linux VA-API, Apple VideoToolbox, and Rockchip RKMPP. Support depends on the operating system, drivers, software, and workload; some pipeline stages may still run on the CPU.

Hardware acceleration can be involved in decoding, scaling, tone-mapping, and encoding, but support for one stage does not mean the entire video pipeline runs on the accelerator. A device may therefore still use substantial CPU resources despite having an enabled hardware-acceleration method. Check Jellyfin’s hardware-acceleration documentation for the relevant platform and configuration.

Plan storage and network separately from the processor

Jellyfin’s hardware-selection guidance recommends a 100GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache. This is a recommendation for server files and cache, not a specified capacity for the media library. Choose NAS drives or other library storage based on the collection’s size and your needs for capacity, acoustics, warranty, and redundancy.

The same Jellyfin guidance recommends a gigabit Ethernet adapter or faster. For remote access, it recommends at least 20 Mbps of upload bandwidth; when total upload bandwidth is below 100 Mbps, it recommends limiting Jellyfin upload speed to 70% of the available upload speed. These are project recommendations, not guaranteed thresholds for every file or household network. Wired gigabit-or-faster connectivity is the practical baseline to compare across candidate hosts.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Decide what the server must do. If most playback is Direct Play, your video-transcoding needs may be modest. If you expect frequent video conversion, subtitle burn-in, or HDR-to-SDR tone-mapping, prioritize hardware acceleration.
  2. Choose the architecture. Start with an Intel N100-class mini PC if you want a supported integrated-graphics server and can keep media elsewhere. Consider an all-in-one NAS if consolidating storage and server duties matters, but verify software installation and acceleration for the exact model.
  3. Check the media engine and software path. Confirm operating-system, driver, and Jellyfin support for the acceleration method you plan to use. Do not infer Jellyfin suitability from a processor name or drive-bay count alone.
  4. Size the system storage and memory. Use Jellyfin’s general recommendations of a 100GB SSD for server files and transcoding cache and 8GB RAM for integrated-graphics servers as planning guidance.
  5. Confirm the network and media-storage plan. Look for gigabit Ethernet or faster, account for remote-access upload bandwidth, and ensure the storage system can hold the library you intend to maintain.

There are no supported head-to-head prices, power measurements, stock comparisons, or model-specific stream benchmarks for these options. Compare current local pricing and product details yourself, and treat product capability as conditional on the operating system, drivers, configuration, and playback workload.
