Georgia Power reported unauthorized access involving about 400,000 customer accounts across Southern Company utilities—not 400,000 Georgia Power accounts alone. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that roughly 300,000 were Georgia Power customers and about 100,000 were customers of Alabama Power and Mississippi Power combined. Names and contact details, basic account information, and, for some customers, the last four digits of Social Security numbers were reportedly involved. The company said bank account, payment card, and driver’s license numbers were not accessed.
How many customers were affected?
The approximately 400,000 figure is the reported total across Southern Company utilities. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution broke that estimate down to about 300,000 Georgia Power customers and roughly 100,000 customers of Alabama Power and Mississippi Power combined. The company said bank account numbers, payment card numbers, and driver’s license numbers were not accessed. The reporting does not specify the precise basic account fields involved, so customers should check their own notice for details about their account.
What is known about the breach?
Georgia Power said it detected suspicious activity involving its online customer portal. The AJC reported that the company identified the activity through ongoing monitoring, took steps to stop it, contacted law enforcement, and investigated. CBS Atlanta reported that Georgia Power did not believe unauthorized access was continuing when it published its October 5, 2026 report.

Find and verify your notice
The AJC reported that Georgia Power was notifying affected customers by email and U.S. mail. If you receive a message, avoid relying on links or phone numbers in an unexpected communication. Contact the utility using the number printed on your bill or the company website if you are unsure whether a message is genuine. The company’s advice, quoted by CBS Atlanta, was to be wary of people claiming to represent Georgia Power; it also said it would not threaten immediate disconnection or demand payment over the phone.

Use the reported monitoring offer if eligible
Georgia Power reportedly offered affected customers one year of Equifax credit monitoring and identity theft restoration services. CBS Atlanta said activation details were included in the customer email. Follow the instructions in your official notice to determine eligibility and enroll. The public reporting reviewed does not establish an enrollment deadline, complete service terms, or whether every utility used identical notice language.
Review accounts and watch for suspicious activity
As a practical precaution, check utility and financial-account activity for transactions or changes you do not recognize. Be alert to unexpected calls, emails, or texts that use personal details to sound convincing. Do not share passwords, verification codes, or payment information with an unsolicited caller; verify the request through a contact method you independently know is genuine.

The AJC also reported a consumer advocate’s concern about the timing of public disclosure and described Georgia’s breach-notification law as requiring notice in the most expedient time possible without unreasonable delay, without a fixed deadline.
