There is no single mobile network that is best for every Canadian. In Opensignal’s February 2026 report, Bell led measured 5G download speed, Rogers led the report’s revised 5G Availability measure, and Rogers and Telus shared the reliability and consistency lead in the overview. In a separate August 2025 report, Bell and Telus tied on both Coverage Experience measures. The useful ranking depends on what you value—and whether a network works at your home, workplace and regular routes.
Canada’s mobile networks, ranked by what they do best
Opensignal’s category results are the clearest basis for a current comparison, but they do not use one shared score to declare an overall winner. The order below is therefore a practical, category-based ranking, not a claim that one carrier will perform best everywhere.

- Bell — 5G download speed. Bell recorded 194.8 Mbps for 5G download speed in Opensignal’s February 2026 Canada report. The 90-day measurement period ran from October 1 to December 29, 2025. This makes Bell the category leader in that report, not necessarily the fastest network at every location. Opensignal, February 2026.
- Rogers — time spent connected to 5G. Rogers scored 85.9% on the report’s revised 5G Availability measure: the share of time users with a 5G device and subscription had access to a detected 5G signal. This is a time-based user-experience measure, not the percentage of Canada’s land or population covered. Because the measure was revised, do not compare this figure directly with percentages from earlier reports using a different definition. Opensignal, February 2026.
- Rogers and Telus — reliability and consistent quality. Opensignal’s February 2026 report overview names the two as sharing the lead for reliability and consistency. The surfaced results do not provide category scores, so this establishes a shared lead in the overview rather than a numeric margin between them. Opensignal, February 2026.
- Bell and Telus — Coverage Experience. In Opensignal’s August 2025 Canada report, both scored 9.5/10 for Coverage Experience and 6.3/10 for 5G Coverage Experience. The measurement period was April 1 to June 29, 2025. These are separate measures from speed and availability, and they are not a guarantee of reception at a particular address. Opensignal, August 2025.
What these rankings measure—and what they do not
Speed
A download-speed result describes observed performance, not how much of the country has service. Bell’s 194.8 Mbps result is specifically a 5G download-speed finding from Opensignal’s October–December 2025 measurement period; it should not be read as a promise of that speed in every place or at every time.
Availability and coverage
Availability is about how much of the time users have a connection under a defined measure. Coverage Experience instead reflects the extent of network experienced in places people live, work and travel. Neither metric is interchangeable with a national population-coverage figure or a land-area map. A high time-connected result does not prove service in remote or sparsely populated areas. Opensignal explains its Coverage Experience measures.

Reliability and consistency
These categories address whether service works dependably and consistently, rather than peak speed alone. The February 2026 report overview identifies Rogers and Telus as sharing the lead, but the surfaced result does not supply scores or a margin. It cannot establish which will be more dependable on an individual commute or in a particular building.
How Canada’s overall coverage picture fits in
The CRTC’s 2026 Communications Market Reports say 5G networks were available to 94% of Canada’s population. Rural and First Nations reserve coverage lagged that average, and the Territories had no reported 5G coverage. The 94% figure is population coverage—not the share of Canada’s land area, and not a carrier-by-carrier ranking.

The CRTC also reports mobile network coverage on more than 100,000 kilometres, or 87%, of major roads and highways. That national aggregate does not mean reception is continuous on every route or road segment. The regulator says Canada’s average mobile download speeds showed no real growth since 2023 and fluctuate seasonally. CRTC, Communications Market Reports 2026.
Why coverage maps may not settle the question
Provider coverage reports can be difficult to compare because companies use different methodologies, and maps may not match a customer’s actual experience. In Telecom Decision 2026-258, the CRTC adopted a common outdoor signal-reporting standard with three levels:

- Level 1: signal sufficient for uninterrupted emergency voice calls and public alerts.
- Level 2: Level 1 plus high-quality voice and video calling and 3 Mbps download / 1 Mbps upload.
- Level 3: Level 2 plus 10 Mbps download / 2 Mbps upload.
Providers must report Level 1 in the next Annual Facilities Survey in early 2027; Levels 2 and 3 are to appear in later surveys. The standard should make future coverage reporting more comparable, but it does not yet provide a current, standardized carrier ranking at every address. CRTC Telecom Decision 2026-258.
How to choose the best network for your use
- Check the places you actually use your phone. Look up coverage for your home, workplace, school, frequent indoor locations and regular travel routes. A national result cannot resolve a local dead zone.
- Decide which performance matters most. If fast 5G downloads are the priority, Bell led the cited February 2026 result. For time with detected 5G service, Rogers led that report’s revised measure. For coverage scores in the August 2025 report, Bell and Telus tied. Reliability and consistency were a shared Rogers–Telus lead in the February overview.
- Check the exact network behind the plan. Confirm which network a prospective plan uses and whether the coverage information applies to your device and plan. The results above do not rank plan prices, data allowances or terms.
- Test your own weak spots when possible. Coverage can vary indoors, along a route and between nearby locations. A local trial or feedback from people who use the network in the same places can help test whether the national category results matter to you.
A separate Rogers benchmark claim
On June 4, 2026, Rogers announced that umlaut ranked it Canada’s best and most reliable 5G+ network, citing umlaut’s Mobile Certificate and Audit Report. This is a company announcement about a named benchmark, not a universal finding that replaces Opensignal’s category-specific results. Rogers announcement, June 4, 2026.
