A chess engine can analyze a position on your device or on a remote server; those are different ways to provide analysis, not proof of how many people use a service. The title’s “over a million chess reviews a month” figure is not substantiated by the available article listing, so it should be treated as an unverified claim unless its source and counting method are provided.
What the title establishes—and what it does not
A DEV Community listing identifies an article by Mehdi Ben Haddou, published September 26, 2026, with the title “Over a million chess reviews a month, and the engine runs on your phone, not my server.” The listing is tagged WebAssembly, but the article body was not available in the material reviewed. It therefore establishes the title and its framing, not the evidence behind the claims. DEV Community listing

In particular, the listing does not explain what counts as a “review,” where the monthly total came from, or how it was measured. A review might mean an analyzed game, a position submitted for evaluation, or another event; these are not interchangeable. Without a defined unit, a data source, and a measurement period, the million-plus figure cannot be independently assessed.

What it means for a chess engine to run on your phone
A chess engine evaluates positions by calculating possible moves and their consequences. In local analysis, that calculation takes place on the user’s device. In a browser, a site may run the engine in a Web Worker—a separate browser thread—rather than send each position to a shared server for calculation. In an app, “on-device” means the phone performs the engine computation.

- Beautiful chess gameplay
- Tough, customizable AI
- Multiplayer support
- Score tracking and automatic saves
- Undo-move functionality
Cloud analysis works differently: a remote computer performs the calculation and returns results over the network. The distinction concerns where the engine’s work happens for a particular analysis feature. It does not, by itself, establish what other parts of an app do with accounts, game history, or synced data.

Two provider descriptions illustrate local analysis, but neither verifies the title’s usage figure or should be generalized to every chess app.

- Chessyi: Its product page says Stockfish runs in a Web Worker in the browser, on the user’s device. Chessyi also reports a library of 1,917,619 master games; that is the provider’s stated library size, not an independently audited count. Chessyi product page
- chess.ceo: Its Google Play listing describes Stockfish analysis as running locally on an Android device without an internet connection. The same listing also mentions cloud engines, so the app’s local-analysis description should not be read as a claim that every feature is offline. It reports a database of over 11 million master-level games and shows an update date of August 18, 2026; both are figures and details stated by the listing. chess.ceo Google Play listing
These are vendors’ descriptions of their own products, not independent tests. They show that local analysis is a real implementation approach, but they do not establish the architecture of the unspecified service in the title.

| Where does the engine calculate? | On your phone or in your browser. | On a remote server. |
| Does it work without internet? | Potentially, if that feature and its required engine are available offline. Confirm the specific app or site’s behavior. | Generally needs a network connection to send positions and receive results. |
| What determines speed? | Your device’s hardware and the engine’s configuration, among other factors. | The service’s server capacity and configuration, plus network conditions. |
| What happens to game data? | Engine calculation may be local; that alone does not establish whether other app features upload or sync data. | The position must reach the server for remote calculation; other data handling depends on the service. |
| Is one stronger? | Not established by location alone. | Not established by location alone. |
The available product descriptions do not provide comparable independent benchmarks, privacy audits, or enough detail to rank their speed or playing strength. Engine location alone cannot tell you how deeply it analyzes, whether it is configured identically, or how it performs on your particular phone.

How to evaluate a “million reviews a month” claim
Before treating a monthly total as a measure of reach or activity, look for the definition and method behind it. Useful details include:
- Unit counted: Is a review one game, one analysis request, one position, or one completed session?
- Time period: Does “a month” refer to a named calendar month, a rolling 30-day window, or an average across several months?
- Counting rules: Are repeat analyses, automated requests, and incomplete reviews included?
- Evidence: Is the figure supported by a published source or disclosed measurement method?
Without those details, the title’s number remains an attributed but unverified statement, not a confirmed usage statistic.
