VLC itself is available for Windows, Linux and macOS according to VideoLAN’s download page. That page displayed version 3.0.24 on October 4, 2026; software versions and operating-system support can change, so check the official pages when downloading. The alternatives’ platform listings use slightly different naming: Kodi lists Mac OS X, while SMPlayer lists macOS. mpv calls itself cross-platform, but its current platform-specific installation route should be checked on the project site.
Interface is the clearest distinction. SMPlayer wraps playback controls in a desktop GUI, mpv keeps its interface deliberately small and configuration-friendly, and Kodi turns media selection into a TV-oriented library experience. Those are different use cases, not evidence that one produces better picture quality or runs faster. No comparative benchmarks are established here.
