The $5 Homelab Problem: What the Documented Outages Actually Show

The exact $5 culprit has not been verified. Documented homelab outages show how a faulty NIC, shared switch, UPS failure or DNS dependency can take multiple services offline—and what owners did to recover.

No verified account identifies the “$5 problem” in this headline. The closest documented network incident describes a Solarflare 10GbE network card locking up a US-16-XG switch; its author later traced the recurring fault to outdated card firmware. That account does not mention a $5 part, and it is not confirmed as the story behind this title.

What happened in the closest documented network outage?

In a 2025 account of a Proxmox homelab, the owner says a desktop Solarflare 10GbE NIC locked up a US-16-XG switch. The cluster, storage, home automation and other services then went offline together. The lockup recurred, and recovery required hard power cycles. The author later found that the NIC firmware was three major versions behind and reports that updating it stopped the problem. This is one owner’s account, not evidence of how often such failures occur or proof that it is the incident described by the “$5” headline. Read the account.

The owner later reflected, “This was my ‘oh no’ moment about single points of failure.” The useful lesson is not that a particular switch or NIC is generally unreliable. It is that a shared network component can become a failure point even when compute or storage has redundancy: in this setup, multiple services depended on the same switch.

Why redundancy elsewhere may not save a homelab

Redundancy only helps when the alternate path does not rely on the same failed component or dependency. Two hosts may be redundant for compute, for example, but still become unreachable together if they share one switch. Likewise, services that have backup machines may still fail if they rely on the same DNS resolver, power source or remote-access route.

  • Network: Check whether cluster nodes, storage links and management access share a switch or uplink.
  • Power: A UPS can extend runtime, but its battery capacity and shutdown plan determine what happens when an outage lasts longer than expected.
  • Name resolution and startup: A service that waits indefinitely or times out while resolving an unavailable backend can prevent other functions from starting.
  • Management access: Monitoring or remote access hosted on the affected network or host may disappear at the moment it is most needed.

Two separate power incidents show how failures cascade

A generator repair outlasted the UPS runtime

In a 2022 report, a homelab owner expected generator repairs to take 5–10 minutes while the rack UPS had roughly 15 minutes of runtime. The work ran long enough for the UPS to beep and the lab to shut down without a controlled powerdown. The owner describes spending several hours troubleshooting, including reinstalling VMware to SD cards and checking RAID arrays, before a Dell Lifecycle Manager firmware/BIOS process allowed the server to post. A backup server covered DNS and web service temporarily, but home automation and media services were unavailable. Read the 2022 outage and recovery account.

An UPS failure exposed DNS and proxy dependencies

A July 17, 2026 postmortem describes an UPS that stopped passing power to an Incus host. Because remote access depended on that host and the home network exposed no ports, recovery required physical access. The author reports about 52.5 hours of disruption to services backed by the host. Read the postmortem.

The incident also involved a separate dependency failure. Split DNS for .incus names ran on the unavailable Incus system. HAProxy’s startup resolution sequence blocked while looking up those names; once the combined wait exceeded its startup timeout, systemd restarted HAProxy and it entered a crash loop. The author reports changing the configuration to init-addr last, none, allowing the proxy to start while unavailable backends remained parked. That setting is specific to the described HAProxy configuration; it is not a universal fix for every startup or DNS problem.

The same postmortem reports that the local TrueNAS backup box had a dead NVMe drive, while RAIDZ-2 and off-site backups remained intact. A tested disaster-recovery restore and backup MX helped provide fallback and limit data loss in that setup.

Practical ways to reduce the impact of the next failure

Map shared dependencies

Write down which switch, host, resolver, power circuit and management path each critical service needs. Look for supposed backups that still depend on the primary system: a standby service is not independent if it uses the same failed switch or DNS host.

Keep a recovery path outside the main failure domain

In the network account, the owner describes adding a monitoring server connected through a closet switch rather than the main switch, so monitoring and notifications could remain available during a main-network failure. The owner also added an emergency management NIC to the router. Those are choices from one setup, not requirements for every homelab; the general test is whether you can still detect and reach the equipment when the primary path is down.

Plan and test power-loss behavior

Estimate runtime using the actual equipment load, account for outages lasting longer than planned maintenance, and verify that UPS status can be monitored. Test the shutdown sequence rather than assuming systems will stop cleanly when the battery runs out. The 2022 account illustrates why a short repair estimate is not a shutdown plan.

Make backups independent and rehearse restores

Keep backup copies separate from the machine they protect, and verify that a restore works. The 2026 postmortem describes off-site backups and a tested disaster-recovery restore; the 2022 owner emphasizes backups and practicing failover to a backup host. Neither a backup nor a failover plan is useful if it cannot be reached or restored during the failure being planned for.

Allow graceful degradation where possible

Review startup dependencies and timeouts for proxies and other services. Decide what should happen when DNS or a backend is unavailable: should an unrelated front end fail to start, or should it start and mark that backend unavailable? Test the chosen behavior while the dependency is deliberately offline.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The documented accounts support a clear resilience lesson: a small or overlooked failure can have a large blast radius when many services share a network, power or name-resolution dependency. They do not identify the exact $5 item implied by the headline. The network account attributes its recurring issue to outdated NIC firmware; the two power incidents are different events and should not be presented as the same story. No population-level outage rate or general risk estimate is established by these individual accounts.
