Texting is one kind of messaging; messaging is the broader term. In everyday conversation, people often use “texting” for messages sent from a phone, but the label doesn’t identify the service behind them. A conversation in a messaging app might use SMS, MMS, RCS, iMessage, or another service.
What is the difference between texting and messaging?
“Texting” usually means sending text messages. “Messaging” can mean communicating through a wider range of digital services and apps, including services that carry text, photos, files, or group conversations. The terms overlap in ordinary speech: someone may call an SMS, RCS, or iMessage conversation “texting.” There is no single, universal technical boundary between the everyday terms.

For a practical distinction, treat texting as a familiar activity and messaging as the broader category. To identify how a particular message was sent, look for the service—not just the name of the app.

What do SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage mean?
These names refer to services, not simply different words for the same thing. SMS stands for Short Message Service; MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service. RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is another distinct messaging service. Apple’s developer documentation lists SMS, MMS, and RCS as cellular messaging services, while its Messages app can also use iMessage. Apple Developer Documentation

Is Messages the same thing as iMessage?
No. Messages is Apple’s app; iMessage is one service the app can use. Apple says Messages can carry SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage, so seeing a conversation in that app does not by itself tell you which service handled it. Apple’s Messages & Privacy page

The same general distinction is useful elsewhere: an app is the interface you use, while a service is the system carrying the conversation. Check the app’s conversation details or service indicators to find what applies to your own exchange; labels and available services vary by device, app, network, and region.
When does the distinction matter?
In everyday conversation
Usually, it does not matter. People commonly say they are “texting” even when the underlying service is not SMS. If someone needs to know the technical details—such as whether a feature is available—name the service or check the conversation’s indicators rather than relying on the casual label.

In a legal definition
Legal usage can be narrower than ordinary speech. In the cited U.S. statutory provision, 47 U.S.C. § 227, “text message” includes SMS and MMS and excludes certain messages sent over an IP-enabled messaging service to another user of that same service. This is a definition for that specific U.S. provision, not a universal rule for other laws or jurisdictions. U.S. Code, Title 47, § 227 (2023 edition)

- Check the app’s conversation details or service indicator. Look for a label that identifies the service, if the app provides one.
- Identify the service, not just the app. A single app may support more than one service, as Apple Messages does.
- Confirm feature support for both participants. Do not assume that RCS or any other service’s features will work in every conversation; availability depends on the devices, apps, networks, and region involved.
These checks answer different questions: the first helps identify the service used, while the last helps determine whether a particular capability is available. The everyday word “texting” alone answers neither.
