Select None and choose Apply to test whether the usual colors return. If you rely on a contrast theme, keep it on and customize its Selected Text color instead. A change noticed after an update does not, by itself, prove that the update caused it.
First, identify what changed
“Highlight” can mean the background behind selected text, the text cursor, or a selected control in an app. Note which one looks different, whether it happens in multiple apps, and whether other interface colors changed too. This distinction helps separate a Windows-wide accessibility setting from an app’s own theme or rendering behavior.

A Microsoft Q&A post dated December 20, 2025, describes black selection highlighting in Word and Outlook. It is one user’s report, not evidence that a particular Windows update caused a widespread problem. The report does not identify a Windows build or update number.

Check Windows contrast themes
Contrast themes change colors across the screen to improve readability. Microsoft documents this path for Windows 11; Windows 10 also supports contrast themes, although labels and layout can vary by version.

- Open Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes.
- If a theme is active, choose None, then select Apply. Check the same text and apps again.
- If the selection color returns to normal, the contrast theme was affecting the appearance. If you need the theme for accessibility, turn it back on and customize its colors rather than leaving it disabled.
Microsoft also documents the keyboard shortcut Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen for turning a contrast theme on or off. Avoid pressing it unintentionally while troubleshooting, since it can change the active theme.
Keep the theme and change Selected Text
On the Contrast themes page, choose Edit for the theme, adjust Selected Text, and save and apply the theme. Microsoft describes this color as applying to selected menu items or options, including selected text in a Word ribbon. The exact appearance can still depend on how an individual app renders selection.

Check color mode and accent color separately
Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors to review Windows color mode and accent color. Accent color can affect interface elements such as buttons, links, and other interactive components, but Microsoft does not document it as a universal control for selected text across every app. Changing it may therefore leave text highlighting unchanged.

Some applications also have their own light or dark theme, independently of Windows, and not every app supports dark mode. If the change is limited to one app, check that app’s appearance settings and whether it has updated. Microsoft’s Windows app guidance on contrast themes explains that app styling and high-contrast handling can affect how selected states appear.
Use the symptoms to choose the next step

If the change started after an update
Record the details before reporting the problem. The timing is useful, but it does not establish that the update caused the change. The cited user report does not connect the symptom to a specific update, and no update-specific advisory for this exact issue is established here.

- Windows edition, version, and OS build.
- The update’s KB number, if known.
- The affected app and its version.
- Whether the change occurs in multiple apps or only one.
- Whether a contrast theme is active and whether other colors changed.
- A screenshot showing the selection and surrounding interface.
For a one-app problem, send those details to that app’s support channel. For a system-wide problem, use Microsoft Support. Avoid treating a macro, registry change, or display-driver adjustment as a proven fix: the cited support discussion does not establish that those suggestions resolve this symptom.
What Windows does—and does not—let you control
Microsoft documents a Selected Text color within contrast-theme editing. The available documentation does not establish a single Windows control that sets text-selection color universally across every app outside contrast themes. App developers can affect selected-state rendering; Microsoft Learn explains that Windows apps enable high-contrast adjustment by default, which can use white foreground text on a black highlight background to maintain contrast.

That documented behavior explains why colors can differ under high contrast, but it does not identify the cause in any particular person’s case. If contrast themes are off and only one app is affected, the app’s support team is the most relevant place to investigate its rendering.
