Use TestFlight to distribute beta builds and gather feedback before launch; use an App Store release to make an approved app available to customers. They are usually stages in one workflow, not competing destinations: test if your project benefits from a beta, then submit the release candidate for App Review. Apple makes beta testing optional, so you can submit directly for release if you do not need pre-release testing.
How TestFlight and App Store release differ
| Decision factor | TestFlight | App Store release |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Distribute beta builds and collect feedback before release. | Make an approved version available to customers. |
| Audience | Internal testers and external testers invited by email or through a public link. | App Store customers in the territories where the app is available. |
| Review path | The first external build for a version receives TestFlight App Review; later builds may not require a full review. | App Review is required before publication. |
| Availability period | Each build can be tested for up to 90 days, according to Apple’s TestFlight overview. | Not a time-limited beta invitation; availability follows the release settings and Apple’s distribution rules. |
| Best fit | Use when pre-release validation or feedback is valuable. | Use when the app is ready for customers; release can follow TestFlight or be submitted directly. |

Use TestFlight when you need feedback or validation
A beta is useful when you want to check features with real users, uncover crashes across devices, test onboarding, or collect feedback before launch. App Store Connect provides tester feedback along with build, session, and crash information. Apple’s TestFlight overview describes the service as a way to improve an app before submission.

Use internal testing for a controlled team beta
Internal testing suits a team whose testers already have App Store Connect access to the app’s content. Apple’s published limit is up to 100 internal testers. It is a practical way to check a build with colleagues before widening access.
Use external testing to reach people outside your team
External testers can join by email invitation or public link. Apple allows up to 10,000 external testers per app; invited testers can test on up to 30 devices. The limits are operational caps, not a promise that every tester will participate or that review will take a particular amount of time.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
External testing adds a beta review step: Apple says the first build for a version submitted to external testing requires a full TestFlight App Review, while later builds may not. Add the build to a group and provide the required beta description and review information. See Apple’s external tester guidance and TestFlight App Review definition.
Submit for App Store release when the build is ready for customers
When the release candidate is ready and its release metadata is complete, select a build in App Store Connect and submit it for App Review. Passing through TestFlight does not publish the app: public distribution follows App Review and the App Store release process. Apple’s Xcode distribution guide describes the sequence: “After beta testing your final build, submit it to App Review, then offer it on the App Store.”

Move a TestFlight build toward public release
- Upload using the right distribution option. If the build may become the public release, choose the App Store Connect distribution option in Xcode. Apple’s distribution tutorial explains that “TestFlight Internal Only” uploads are limited to internal TestFlight and cannot be submitted for App Store review and distribution.
- Run the beta you need. Use internal testers for team checks, or external testers when you need feedback from outside the App Store Connect team. For an external beta, allow for the first-build review step.
- Review feedback and prepare the release candidate. Fix issues that matter for the customer release and complete the release information in App Store Connect.
- Select and submit the build for App Review. After testing, choose the build in App Store Connect and submit it through the release workflow. A TestFlight build with the required release information can be submitted as the last build shown in App Store Connect.
When skipping TestFlight makes sense
Skip beta testing if your release process and the app’s risk do not warrant feedback from testers. Apple describes TestFlight as optional. A direct submission can be reasonable when the team is prepared to release without a beta; it still must pass App Review before it can be offered publicly.
Apple’s published TestFlight limits are up to 90 days per build, up to 10,000 external testers, and up to 100 internal testers with access to the app’s App Store Connect content. These are service limits, not review-time guarantees. Apple’s guidance does not promise a specific turnaround for either TestFlight review or App Review.
