To check whether browser content is being exposed during a screen share, use a small page populated only with unmistakably fake markers, then inspect what the recipient or recording actually receives. Repeat the check for each browser and sharing surface you support. A picker can limit or shape what users select, but it does not prove that content has been redacted.
What this fixture can—and cannot—tell you
A browser screen share sends a selected surface—such as a tab, window, or display—through a capture path. The application requests capture, but the user chooses the surface. Chrome says a site cannot preselect a particular window or screen: “This is by design, as that would give the web app too much power over the user.” (Chrome for Developers)

A fixture gives your team a repeatable way to inspect the output for scenarios you care about. It is not a certified test format or a guarantee against every exposure. Mozilla warns that sharing a browser window or whole screen with an untrusted site can expose unintended activity, including information from another site appearing in the shared view. Its help article was last updated January 11, 2017, so use it to understand the risk rather than as a guide to every current Firefox prompt. (Mozilla Support)
Build a minimal synthetic fixture
Use unmistakably fake markers
Create a test page with fabricated values such as TEST-EMAIL-001 and FAKE-ACCOUNT-002. Do not use real passwords, account numbers, customer records, or secrets. Make each marker distinct enough that a person reviewing a still image or recording can recognize it immediately.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
Include plausible unintended states
Put visible markers on the intended page and place different markers in a second tab or a test popup. This helps distinguish the content the presenter expects to share from content that might appear because of a selected window, tab switch, or other browser state. Keep the scenario controlled and repeatable; the fixture is a practical team check, not an official standard.
Record what the recipient actually sees
For each run, compare the presenter’s expectation with the remote recipient’s view or the resulting recording. Note which markers appeared, where they appeared, and whether a safeguard blocked capture or altered the output before it reached the recipient. Do not infer a clean result from the picker alone.

Run the check for every supported sharing path
- List the paths you support. Include browser tab, application window, and full display where applicable, as well as the browsers and relevant versions in your environment.
- Load the same fixture state. Use the expected page, the second tab, and the synthetic popup or other test state in a consistent sequence.
- Share each surface using the normal user flow. Keep browser, operating system, meeting application, and selection path in the run notes so results are attributable to a specific setup.
- Inspect the receiver-side image or recording. Search for every synthetic marker, including those placed outside the intended page.
- Log the outcome and rerun after changes. Record the surface, browser/version, content state, observed markers, and whether content was blocked or redacted. Repeat after browser, meeting-software, policy, or sharing-flow changes that could affect capture.
| Check dimension | What to record |
|---|---|
| Selected surface | Tab, application window, or full display |
| Browser | Name and relevant version |
| Content state | Expected fixture page, second tab, and synthetic unexpected state |
| Observation point | Presenter’s expected view versus recipient view or recording |
| Result | Markers visible, their locations, and whether blocking or redaction occurred |
Understand what browser picker controls do
Chrome documents options for shaping the screen-capture picker and sharing experience, including displaySurface, monitorTypeSurfaces, surfaceSwitching, selfBrowserSurface, and systemAudio. For example, displaySurface can emphasize a surface type, monitorTypeSurfaces: "exclude" can omit screens, and surfaceSwitching can control whether a browser-level tab-switching button is offered. These controls affect available or suggested surfaces and some switching behavior; they are not page-content redaction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChrome’s documentation lists desktop introductions for some controls: systemAudio in Chrome 105; displaySurface, surfaceSwitching, and selfBrowserSurface in Chrome 107; and monitorTypeSurfaces in Chrome 119. Those are compatibility notes, not guarantees of support in every current browser, operating system, or deployment. Chrome also warns that defaults may change. Check current support and explicitly configure the behavior your application needs. (Chrome for Developers)

How other safeguards differ
| Safeguard | What it does | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Browser picker controls | Constrain or influence the surfaces users can choose and, in some cases, switching behavior. | Do not establish that page content has been redacted. |
| Synthetic fixture check | Lets your team inspect its own capture path and supported scenarios. | No official fixture standard or cross-browser benchmark is established by the cited sources. |
| Meeting-software detection | May detect specified content types and alert the presenter. | Coverage depends on the product, entitlement, sharing mode, and detection limits. |
| Administrator capture policy | Can block screen-capture APIs in Edge. | Blocking capture is not redaction and can also prevent screen sharing. |
Teams sensitive-content detection
Microsoft says sensitive-content detection in Teams requires Teams Premium. When enabled, it scans shared content for supported types, such as payment-card and specified national identification numbers; on detection, the presenter and meeting organizer are notified and the presenter is prompted to stop sharing. Microsoft documents unsupported modes including Whiteboard, camera content, PowerPoint Live, Excel Live, and “Browse my computer.” It also says non-English and fast-moving shared content are not detected. The setting must be enabled before a meeting starts to take effect without requiring participants to leave and rejoin, and end-to-end encryption is unavailable in meetings with detection enabled. This is a bounded, product-specific safeguard—not a general browser-redaction guarantee. (Microsoft Support)
Edge enterprise capture policy
Microsoft Edge’s ScreenCaptureAllowed policy can allow or deny screen-capture APIs such as getDisplayMedia() and the Desktop Capture extension API. When disabled, calls fail, which can also stop web-meeting screen sharing. Microsoft documents exceptions for sites matching certain origin policies. This is an administrative way to block capture, not a way to redact selected content from an allowed capture; consult the policy documentation for its platform and version details.
