To see which sound devices Windows 11 recognizes, open Settings > System > Sound. Check Output for speakers and headphones or Input for microphones, then select a device to view its settings. This shows Windows devices—not a complete map of your computer’s physical jacks.
Find sound devices Windows recognizes
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, review the available speakers, headphones, and other playback devices.
- Under Input, review the available microphones and other recording devices.
- Select the device you want to inspect to open its properties and settings.
If a connected device does not appear, Windows may not be detecting it. Check the physical connection and the computer’s port documentation before assuming the jack is faulty.

Identify the physical headphone or microphone jack
Look for a label or icon beside the port. Some computers use green for audio output and pink for microphone input; others label ports as “headphone” or “microphone.” These conventions are not universal. If the purpose of a jack is unclear, find your computer or motherboard model and consult its manufacturer’s documentation. Microsoft likewise advises checking the hardware maker’s information when jack mapping is uncertain: Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.

Troubleshoot a jack or device Windows cannot use
If a device is missing
- Make sure the plug is fully seated and connected to the correct port.
- If the computer has several audio jacks, confirm each jack’s function in the manufacturer’s documentation.
- Return to Sound settings and select the intended device under Output or Input.
- For a microphone, check microphone access in Windows and access for the app you are using. See Microsoft’s Fix microphone problems.
If the microphone remains undetected, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking audio drivers; uninstalling the audio device and restarting may allow Windows to attempt to reinstall it.
If headphones or speakers produce no sound
- In Settings > System > Sound, select the output device you intend to use.
- Check its volume and make sure it is not muted.
- If needed, set the intended playback device as the default device.
- As a diagnostic step, disable audio enhancements and see whether playback returns.
- Run the Windows 11 audio troubleshooter if the issue continues.
Microsoft lists these checks in Fix audio issues when no sound plays from speakers or headphones in Windows. For broader sound checks, see Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting guide.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
When a headset plug and computer jacks do not match
Some headsets use one combined plug for headphone audio and microphone input, while some computers have separate headphone and microphone jacks. A splitter adapter may be appropriate for that specific mismatch, but it does not identify a jack or guarantee compatibility. Check the computer’s port layout, headset plug configuration, and manufacturer compatibility information before buying an adapter. Windows device selection cannot change what a physical port supports.
