First verify the route’s actual exit location: without that check, a difference could come from the proxy or request setup rather than the site’s regional behavior.
Run the same HTTP request through each country
Choose a small set of countries that matter to your audience or test case. Keep the URL, method, request headers and client behavior the same; change only the selected route. Shellroute advertises coverage in 120+ countries, but that is the vendor’s figure, not an independently verified inventory. Check its current documentation for available locations.

For a basic comparison, run curl once per country and save each response’s headers and body separately:

shellroute run DE -- curl -sS -D /tmp/de.headers -o /tmp/de.body -w '%{http_code} %{url_effective}n' https://example.com/Shellroute documents the shellroute run COUNTRY -- command pattern for running a command through a selected country. The curl options save response headers and body to files and print the HTTP status and effective URL. This is a useful starting point for HTTP response troubleshooting; Cloudflare’s HTTP status troubleshooting documentation also describes using curl to inspect responses and headers.

Compare the responses, not just the status code
Inspect the saved results side by side. A status code alone can miss a redirect or a page variation, so compare the final URL, headers and body as well.
- Status: Did one route receive an access denial or a different HTTP status?
- Final URL: Was the request redirected to a regional domain, locale path or different destination?
- Headers: Did the response include different cache, language or other headers?
- Body: Did the page content, language, currency or availability message change?
These are things to look for, not guaranteed differences: a site may return the same response from every tested location. If several request details differ, repeat the comparison with those details held constant before attributing an outcome to country.

Verify the exit before interpreting a result
Confirm that each request used the intended country route and record the location and proxy type alongside its output. Shellroute’s proxy-mode documentation provides a JSON format that includes the exit IP, country, city and proxy type. This gives you a way to check the route rather than relying only on the country code in the command.

The available city and route inventory can change, so consult the current documentation when choosing a specific location. Keep a simple record of the country, city if selected, proxy type, verified exit, status, final URL and files for headers and body. This makes a repeated comparison easier to interpret.

Know which traffic the route covers
Shellroute can route a shell session or an individual command. Its site describes the scope as independent: unrelated applications and terminals keep their normal connection. That isolation is useful for a targeted check, but the result applies to the routed request and client—not automatically to every application on the machine.
In proxy mode, Shellroute starts a local proxy server. A client can use the printed proxy URL or standard proxy environment variables. The documentation lists HTTP-oriented clients such as curl, Python requests, Node fetch and Go HTTP clients as clients that can use those variables. It also says DNS lookups, SSH, ping, raw TCP sockets and UDP traffic are not automatically proxied through them. If the test uses a protocol or application outside that documented scope, do not assume it followed the selected country route.

For browser behavior, configure the browser explicitly
A curl request can show what an HTTP client receives; it does not test an interactive browser journey such as checkout. Shellroute says browser tools such as Playwright need explicit proxy configuration. Configure the browser or automation tool to use the proxy, then repeat the same journey with equivalent browser state for each location. Treat that as a separate test from the command-line comparison.
Check current locations and pricing directly
Shellroute describes itself as an “Open-source CLI · Pay per use · Residential + datacenter proxies.” Its product page advertises residential proxies from $3/GB and datacenter proxies from $1/GB; these are vendor-advertised starting prices, with availability and final cost not independently established here. Consult Shellroute’s product page for current coverage and pricing before planning repeated tests.
