Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised), or FSD (Supervised), is a set of driver-assistance features that can handle some steering and driving tasks. It does not make a Tesla autonomous: the driver must supervise the road continuously and be ready to take control.
What Tesla FSD (Supervised) is
Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as an advanced driver-assistance feature set. Depending on the vehicle and available features, it can attempt to follow a route and perform driving tasks such as steering along curves, changing lanes, turning, choosing route forks, negotiating intersections and roundabouts, and entering or exiting highways. Tesla also describes Autopark and, on select vehicles, Summon functions. These are advertised capabilities, not a promise that every function is available on every Tesla.

Tesla’s official support page states: “Currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.” The driver remains responsible for the vehicle and its safe operation.
What “Supervised” requires of the driver
The driver must watch the roadway and surrounding traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists, and be prepared to intervene immediately. Tesla’s manuals say the cabin camera monitors attentiveness and that the system can issue escalating warnings requiring a driver response. The absence of a warning does not mean supervision can stop.

The driver can disengage the system by braking, steering manually, or using the controls specified for that vehicle. Check the applicable Owner’s Manual for the exact controls and instructions.
Where the system can struggle
Tesla warns that intervention may be needed on narrow roads with oncoming traffic, in construction zones, at complex intersections, around blind corners, and when crossing intersections. The system may not detect or respond appropriately to pedestrians, cyclists, other road users, or animals. Driver monitoring may also alert incorrectly or fail to alert.

Camera condition matters: obstruction, dirt, rain, or faded lane markings can affect performance. Tesla’s Model S manual specifically warns against using the feature when a rear-mounted item, such as a bike rack or trailer, blocks a camera. Follow the instructions for the specific vehicle; do not assume that one model’s guidance applies identically to another.

FSD (Supervised) availability and functionality can depend on the vehicle’s model, trim, model year, hardware, software version, configuration, and region. An over-the-air software update may be required. Feature controls can also vary by model and year.

To check what applies to a particular car, Tesla directs owners to look at the vehicle’s Software screen for “Full Self Driving Capability” in the included package and “Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Software.” Then consult that vehicle’s Owner’s Manual for feature availability and operating instructions. Tesla’s support information notes that availability and details can change.
How Tesla classifies FSD (Supervised)
Tesla’s evidence dashboard classifies FSD (Supervised) as SAE Level 2. In Tesla’s description, that means the system can provide sustained lateral and longitudinal control while the driver remains responsible for supervising the driving environment and responding when needed. Tesla cautions that the level describes the division of responsibility, not a ranking of technical sophistication.

Subscription details to verify
Tesla’s support page listed a subscription price of $99 USD per month when reviewed and said pricing and feature availability are subject to change. It describes subscribing through the Tesla app or the vehicle touchscreen; a software update may need to finish before the features become available. Treat the price and process as time-sensitive and confirm the current terms with Tesla before subscribing.

The same page stated that Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) Transfer Program ended March 31, 2026. Transfer eligibility and program terms are not permanent product features, so verify current information directly with Tesla rather than relying on older offers or descriptions.

How to interpret Tesla’s safety figures
Tesla’s evidence dashboard reports more than 10.5 billion kilometers (6.5 billion miles) driven with FSD (Supervised) active on public roads worldwide. The dashboard page reviewed does not state the figure’s publication year. It is a Tesla-reported usage figure, not by itself evidence of a particular safety outcome.
Tesla Support also makes claims of “7x fewer major and minor collisions” and “5x fewer off-highway collisions.” The cited page passage does not state the year or comparison methodology. These should be treated as Tesla claims, not as independently established findings.
