What to do first if assisted driving disengages
- Take control immediately. Steer and drive manually; do not troubleshoot while relying on the feature. - Read the exact alert. A camera-visibility message, a calibration instruction, an attention warning, and an operating-condition restriction have different causes and remedies. Feature names and displayed wording can differ by vehicle.
- Wait until it is safe to inspect. Check the visible camera areas and windshield for dirt, debris, ice, snow, mist, residue, or wiper streaks. Use the camera locations and cleaning directions in your vehicle’s manual.
- Follow the alert’s instruction. If it directs you to stop or seek immediate inspection, do so. For persistent issues, use Tesla Service as directed by the manual.
Camera visibility: check for obstruction, weather, or condensation
Tesla lists dirt and debris, rain, fog, snow, dew, bright sunlight or glare, low light, and condensation as conditions that can limit camera visibility. Some visually monotonous surroundings, such as tunnel walls or highway dividers, may also affect what the cameras can detect. If the alert points to dirt or debris
When safely stopped, inspect the camera surfaces identified in the vehicle manual and remove visible dirt or debris using the manual’s instructions. Keep the cameras unobstructed. Do not assume cleaning will correct an alert caused by weather, poor visibility, damaged or misaligned equipment, or another persistent issue.
If the alert points to condensation
For the cited Model S condensation alert, Tesla advises preconditioning the cabin with the temperature set to High and A/C on, then turning on the front windshield defroster. Its Model S camera guidance also suggests directing the front air vents toward the door pillars to help dry condensation. Do not disassemble a camera enclosure or try to wipe its interior: Tesla says this condensation cannot be wiped clean. Follow the instructions for your own vehicle and alert. Calibration: what “continue driving” means
If the alert says “Continue driving to allow cameras to calibrate,” the affected features remain unavailable until calibration completes. Tesla says the touchscreen shows calibration progress. In the cited Model S manual, calibration typically completes after 20–25 miles (32–40 km), but the distance varies substantially with road and environmental conditions; those figures are guidance, not a guaranteed completion point for every Tesla.
When conditions permit, a straight road with clearly visible lane markings can help calibration. Keep driving attentively and manually as needed; do not clear calibration unless the manual for your vehicle or Tesla Service directs you to do so. The cited Model S manual advises contacting or scheduling service if calibration is still incomplete after 100 miles (160 km), or if the relevant features remain unavailable despite successful calibration. Road and visibility conditions can limit operation
An alert or disengagement does not necessarily mean the vehicle needs cleaning or a reset. Tesla lists poor visibility, sharp curves, significant elevation changes, unclear road signs, tunnels, highway dividers, and bright light among conditions that may affect assisted-driving operation. Its limitations list is not exhaustive, and Traffic-Aware Cruise Control can cancel unexpectedly. - The driver is detected in the driver’s seat and the seat belt is buckled.
- Doors, trunks, and the frunk are closed.
- The charge cable is unplugged.
- The vehicle is in a mode that permits the feature.
The feature may disengage if the vehicle is shifted out of Drive, a door or trunk is opened, the seat belt is released, an Automatic Emergency Braking event occurs, attention prompts are repeatedly ignored, or the feature becomes unavailable. If it disengages, take over steering immediately. These instructions are specific to the cited Model S feature; other vehicles and software may behave differently. Attention prompts and temporary suspension
The cabin camera monitors driver attentiveness. Repeatedly ignoring prompts can escalate warnings and disable the feature for the rest of the drive. The cited Model S manual describes a one-week suspension after five strikeouts, with a strikeout forgiven after 3.5 days without another. Those are rules for the covered Model S feature in that manual, not a general rule for every Tesla. Respond promptly to prompts and remain ready to take control.

When to contact Tesla Service
Use Tesla Service when the alert persists despite following the vehicle’s instructions, when calibration exceeds the applicable manual’s service threshold, or when features remain unavailable after successful calibration and there is no visible obstruction. Share the exact alert and your vehicle’s model, year, configuration, and software information so the issue can be assessed against the right guidance. Do not continue driving if the displayed warning tells you to stop or obtain immediate inspection.
