Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If a Terraria server appears to generate a fresh world after every restart, it is usually not loading the same .wld file. The most common causes are a wrong or relative path, a filename mismatch, autocreate creating a replacement when the expected file is missing, an unwritable world directory, or a container and restart script that does not preserve the live volume. Stop the server cleanly, preserve the current files, identify the exact world path printed at startup, disable automatic creation while testing, and verify that the process can write to that directory.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Terraria servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What the symptom means
Terraria persistence is tied to one selected world file. The server reads the path supplied by the -world command-line option or the world= entry in its configuration. If that file is found and writable, changes made in the game can be loaded after a restart. If the expected file is absent, autocreate can generate a new world instead. A newly generated map may look like a reset even though the original world still exists elsewhere.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →There are two different failures that look identical to players:
- Wrong file: the server saves successfully, but it is saving a different
.wldfile from the one you inspected or backed up. - Lost file: the server uses the intended path during one run, but a container, restore job, read-only mount, or restart process removes or hides that path before the next run.
Do not keep deleting the new world while guessing. Each run can overwrite clues about which path was used and can make recovery harder.

Preserve the current world before changing settings
Make a copy before editing a configuration, changing a panel setting, or attempting a restore. A controlled stop prevents the server from writing over the file while you copy it.
- In the server console, enter
saveand wait for the save to complete. - Enter
exitto shut down and save. Do not useexit-nosavefor this investigation. - Copy the active
.wldfile, any adjacent.bakfile, and the entire TShock backup directory if TShock is installed. Give the copy a dated name and store it outside the live server directory. - Record each file’s modification time and size. Do not assume the file with the newest name is the file the server was using.
The official command set includes save, exit, and exit-nosave. The server may autosave periodically, but a controlled shutdown with exit is the reliable point at which the world is explicitly saved.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDiagnostic workflow: find the file the server really loads
1. Read the startup path, not just the panel label
Start the server once and copy the complete world path printed in the console or startup log. Check every character: drive letter, directory, filename, capitalization, and the .wld extension. A panel may display a friendly world name while the process uses a different absolute path.
After stopping the server, open that exact directory and compare its file’s modification time with the time of your test save. If the timestamp does not change, either the server is using another file or it cannot write to the directory.
2. Search every launch layer for a second path
Look for settings in all places that can start the process:
serverconfig.txtor another vanilla configuration file.- A Windows batch file such as
start-server.bator a Linux shell script. - A Docker command, compose file, systemd unit, or provider startup command.
- A hosting-panel startup field and any per-instance environment variables.
- TShock arguments, including
-worldpathand-configpath.
The effective command line wins when it conflicts with an assumption in a configuration file. TShock documents that command-line options override configuration options, so inspect the wrapper script and the final process arguments rather than editing only a panel form.

3. Temporarily disable automatic creation
While diagnosing an existing world, remove or comment out the autocreate and seed entries. Automatic creation is appropriate when you intentionally want a new map; it hides a missing-file problem when you are trying to preserve an existing one. With automatic creation disabled, a wrong path should produce a clear failure instead of silently presenting a blank world.
Do not delete the original world to make the error appear. Keep the preserved copy and use a test filename if you need to verify a configuration.
4. Verify read and write access
The account running the server must be able to read the world and write both the world file and its directory. Check ownership and permissions on the directory, not only on the file. A file copied by an administrator can be readable by you but unwritable by the service account.
On Windows, open the folder’s Properties and inspect the Security permissions for the account that launches the server. On Linux, inspect directory ownership and mode with ls -ld, then verify that the service user can create and remove a test file in that directory. Remove the test file afterward. A full disk, quota, or read-only filesystem can produce the same symptom as insufficient permissions.
5. Test one unmistakable change
Start with the corrected path and automatic creation disabled. Make one distinctive change in a safe area, such as removing a single tile or placing a short row of blocks. Enter save, then exit. Confirm that the expected file’s modification time and size changed. Restart and check for that exact alteration. This test distinguishes a save failure from a path-selection failure without relying on a player’s memory of a large build.
6. If the change disappears, inspect the restart chain
When the file changes before shutdown but the change vanishes after a restart, the launch process is probably restoring or hiding the directory. Check for:

Vanilla server configuration
For the official server, point directly to the intended world with an absolute path:
Recommended Free Tools
TerrariaServer.exe -world "C:UsersYourNameDocumentsMy GamesTerrariaWorldsMyWorld.wld"
On Linux or macOS, use the equivalent absolute path for the account that runs the server. An absolute path avoids ambiguity caused by a service starting in a different working directory.
You can also place the path in a config file and launch the server with that file:
world=/absolute/path/to/MyWorld.wld
Use worldpath= only when you deliberately relocate the Worlds directory. It changes where the server looks for worlds; it does not repair a filename mismatch by itself. After changing a path, remove stale duplicate copies from your launch scripts so there is one authoritative setting.

What to expect when the file is missing
If the configured file cannot be found and autocreate remains enabled, the server can create a world at startup. The generated map may receive the same displayed name as the missing world, which makes the replacement easy to mistake for the original. A missing-file error with autocreate disabled is preferable during repair because it identifies the path problem immediately.
TShock-specific checks
TShock adds more configuration layers, so check its arguments and JSON settings as well as the vanilla world option.
| Setting or option | What to check |
|---|---|
-worldpath |
Directory in which TShock looks for world files. Confirm that it is the same directory you are backing up and inspecting. |
-configpath |
Location of TShock configuration files. A different config path can make edits to the expected file ineffective. |
AutoSave |
Whether periodic world saving is enabled. It does not correct a wrong path or an unwritable directory. |
BackupInterval |
How often TShock creates backups. Set a practical interval for your server’s activity and verify that files actually appear. |
BackupKeepFor |
How long backups are retained. A short retention period can leave no usable generation after repeated failures. |
SaveWorldOnCrash |
Whether TShock attempts to save after an unhandled-exception crash. It is not a substitute for a clean shutdown and cannot protect against every process or host failure. |
SaveWorldOnLastPlayerExit |
Whether the world is saved when the last player leaves. Confirm the setting if your restart process stops after the final player disconnects. |
TShock backups are stored in tshock/backups. Treat that directory as a source for recovery, not as the only copy: a container or host restore that removes the live volume can remove the backup directory at the same time.
Default world directories by operating system
These are the usual desktop locations. A dedicated service account, a panel, or a container can use a different root, so the startup path remains authoritative.
| Platform | Typical Worlds directory |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Users<user>DocumentsMy GamesTerrariaWorlds |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Terraria/Worlds |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Terraria/Worlds |
| Hosted panel or container | Provider-specific location such as a mounted /data or /worlds; confirm the mount and startup log. |
Do not copy a world into a desktop user’s directory if the server runs under a separate service account. Put it in the directory named by the server’s effective -world or -worldpath setting and grant the process account access.
Containers and hosted panels: persistence is a mount problem until proven otherwise
A container can show a healthy world during one run while storing it in an ephemeral layer. When the container is recreated, that layer disappears and autocreate produces a new map. The fix is to mount a persistent host directory at the exact path the Terraria process uses, then verify the mount from inside the running container.

- Read the startup command and identify the in-container world directory.
- Inspect the container or panel volume mapping and confirm that the host directory is mounted at that exact location.
- Check that the mapped directory is writable by the container’s process user.
- Stop the server with
saveandexit, then confirm the host directory contains the changed.wldfile. - Recreate or restart the container only after the host copy is present. Check the startup log for the same path and the same test tile.
If a provider performs automatic snapshots or restores, determine whether the restore runs before or after the server starts. A restore job can legitimately replace a newer world with an older snapshot, which is different from Terraria generating a world. Disable or correct that job only after preserving its source files.
Recovery when the original world is missing or damaged
Restore a known-good generation
Stop the server and preserve the failing file under a new name. Choose a dated copy from your independent backups or from tshock/backups. Restore it under a new filename, for example MyWorld-recovered.wld, then point the server explicitly to that filename. Starting with a new name prevents an unnoticed script from continuing to overwrite the original.
After the server loads, verify several known landmarks and recent builds. If the recovered world is correct, keep the failed file for later inspection rather than deleting it.
When a .bak file is the best available copy
A neighboring .bak may represent an earlier save. Copy it before renaming or replacing anything. Rename the copy to a distinct .wld filename and test it with the server stopped and the path explicitly configured. Do not edit the only remaining copy in place.
Separate corruption from configuration loss
If the server cannot load a preserved file even when the absolute path and permissions are correct, corruption is possible. Keep the failing file, its logs, and the timestamped backups together. Test the oldest known-good generation first; changing multiple files and settings at once makes it impossible to tell whether the problem was the world data or the launch configuration.
How to prevent a future reset
- Keep at least two generations of the
.wldfile on storage outside the live server volume. - Before Terraria upgrades, mod changes, or filesystem migrations, use
savefollowed byexit, then copy the world and record its modification time. - For TShock, configure
BackupIntervalandBackupKeepFor, and periodically copytshock/backupsto another host or drive. - Test a restore periodically. A backup that has never been loaded is only an assumption.
- Keep one documented absolute world path and remove obsolete paths from batch files, service units, and panel startup fields.
- Monitor free space and quotas on the directory that contains the live world.
- Give the server process only the filesystem access it needs, but ensure it can write the world directory.
Local repair or managed hosting?
Changing hosts is not automatically a fix. Compare the operational controls that determine whether the same file survives a restart.
| Decision point | Local or self-managed server | Managed host or panel |
|---|---|---|
| World-file persistence | You control the directory, service account, and mount. | Confirm which volume is persistent and where the panel stores the file. |
| Save and shutdown | You can issue save and exit directly. |
Confirm that the panel sends a graceful stop rather than killing the process. |
| Backups | You must schedule, retain, and copy generations yourself. | Verify retention, download access, and whether backups are independent of the live volume. |
| Filesystem permissions | You can change ownership and permissions for the service account. | The provider controls the container user and mount; request the exact path and access model. |
| Restart automation | You own scripts, service units, and restore jobs. | Ask what runs on boot and whether templates or snapshots replace files. |
The best option is the one that gives you an identifiable persistent path, graceful save controls, and recoverable backups—not simply the one with the easiest restart button.
Symptom-to-cause checklist
| What you observe | Most likely explanation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
A new map appears and the expected .wld file never changes. |
Wrong -world path, wrong working directory, or no write permission. |
Use the startup log path and test write access for the server account. |
| The file changes after shutdown, but the next run is blank. | A container mount, restore job, or startup script hides or replaces the live directory. | Compare the host volume and restart automation with the path inside the process. |
Disabling autocreate causes a missing-file error. |
The configured filename or directory does not exist at runtime. | Correct the effective command line or copy the intended file to that exact path. |
| Only changes made shortly before a crash are missing. | The process was killed before a save, or crash-save settings are disabled or ineffective. | Use graceful shutdowns and inspect TShock crash-save and backup settings. |
| Players see an older but recognizable world after every boot. | A snapshot or template is restoring an old generation, not Terraria generating a blank map. | Inspect provider restore tasks and compare modification times of the restored file. |
Final verification
Consider the repair complete only after this sequence succeeds: the startup log names the intended absolute path; automatic creation is disabled; the process account can write there; one visible test change is saved with save; exit completes without errors; the file’s timestamp changes; and the same test change is present after a restart. Then make a second restart after copying the world to independent storage. That confirms both Terraria’s configuration and the host’s persistence.
