Use JavaScript Date for a simple exact timestamp and broad compatibility with existing APIs. Use Temporal.ZonedDateTime when the value must retain a named time zone and calendar for local-time display or calculations. The right choice depends on what the value means—not simply on which API is newer.
What does each type represent?
Date: an exact point in time, with millisecond precision. It does not retain a chosen named time zone as part of the value. See MDN’s Date reference.Temporal.ZonedDateTime: an instant together with a time zone and calendar. It connects an exact moment to the local clock representation used in that zone. See MDN’s Temporal.ZonedDateTime reference.Temporal.Instant: an exact moment without a time zone or calendar, represented at nanosecond precision. It suits values whose meaning is just an instant. See MDN’s Temporal.Instant reference.Temporal.PlainDateTime: date and clock fields without a time zone. Use a plain type when a time is intentionally local or floating and has not been assigned to a region. See MDN’s Temporal.PlainDateTime reference.
Which type should you choose?
| What the value needs to preserve | Prefer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A single exact moment, with compatibility with existing JavaScript APIs | Date or Temporal.Instant |
Both represent an instant. Instant adds nanosecond precision and does not imply a zone. |
| An instant interpreted in a particular region’s local time | Temporal.ZonedDateTime |
It retains the time zone and calendar context used to interpret local time. |
| A date and clock time with no assigned time zone | Temporal.PlainDateTime |
It carries no time-zone assumption. |
| Older or mixed browser targets | Check support; use Date or an appropriate fallback where needed |
MDN currently marks Temporal as limited availability and not Baseline. |
A UTC offset is not a substitute for a named region when regional rules matter. Offsets can change because of daylight-saving transitions or political decisions; a named zone supplies the rules for interpreting local time. For practical purposes, first identify whether the data is an instant, a region-bound event, or a local time awaiting a zone.
Does JavaScript Date store a time zone?
No. A Date represents an instant and does not preserve a selected named time zone in the value. If an application needs to remember that an appointment is tied to a particular region, store that zone explicitly or use a zoned representation. Otherwise, displaying the same instant in different zones can produce different local clock times.
What happens to a ZonedDateTime during daylight-saving changes?
Local times do not always map one-to-one to instants. When clocks move forward, some local times do not exist; when clocks move back, some occur twice. Temporal provides a disambiguation option when turning a local time into a zoned value:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a nonexistent time, it moves forward by the gap duration.compatible, the default, followsDatebehavior: later for gaps and earlier for ambiguities.rejectthrows an error when the local time is ambiguous or nonexistent.
For user-entered appointments and recurring schedules, choose the policy deliberately. If the application should ask the user to resolve an ambiguous or invalid local time, use a rejecting approach rather than silently selecting an instant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you use Temporal.Instant instead?
Choose Temporal.Instant when you need an exact moment but do not need to preserve a time zone or calendar. Choose Temporal.PlainDateTime when you need date and clock fields that have not yet been assigned to a zone. These distinctions prevent a common migration mistake: changing every Date to ZonedDateTime even when the underlying value is only an instant or is intentionally floating.

How should you migrate existing Date values?
- Classify the meaning first. Separate values that represent recorded instants from appointments or schedules defined by local clock time.
- Preserve instants as instants. Convert an existing
Dateto an instant when the goal is to keep the same moment; add a named zone only when region-specific local interpretation is needed. - Keep unzoned local values unzoned. For date and time fields without an assigned region, use a Plain type rather than inventing a zone.
- Check every target runtime. MDN marks Temporal as limited availability and not Baseline, meaning it does not work in some widely used browsers. Verify the browsers and server runtimes in scope before relying on it; if support is incomplete, assess an appropriate polyfill or retain
Datewhere needed. - Review boundary behavior. Test how the application handles nonexistent and repeated local times, and decide whether its disambiguation policy matches its scheduling requirements.
