For most U.S. Galaxy owners running Android 12 or newer, Google Messages is the practical choice. Samsung says Samsung Messages was discontinued on those devices starting July 6, 2026, and directs affected users to Google Messages. That status applies to Samsung’s U.S. guidance—not necessarily every country or older device.
If Samsung Messages is still available on your older Galaxy, the better fit depends on RCS support among your carrier and contacts, your cross-device needs, and whether you rely on a Samsung Messages feature. Here’s how to compare them and switch without losing your SMS/MMS history.

Why Google Messages is the better choice for many U.S. Galaxy owners
Samsung has ended support for newer U.S. Galaxy devices
Samsung says Samsung Messages was discontinued starting July 6, 2026 on U.S. devices running Android 12 or newer, and its transition guidance directs affected users to Google Messages. Samsung says Galaxy S26 and newer devices cannot download Samsung Messages from Galaxy Store; other devices lose the ability to download it after discontinuation. Samsung’s page also says that, after discontinuation, sending through Samsung Messages is limited to emergency service numbers or designated emergency contacts. Samsung’s U.S. transition page.
This is not evidence that Samsung Messages stopped working everywhere or on every older Galaxy. Samsung’s separate legacy guide covers Android 11 or older. Availability outside the U.S. and on older devices can differ, so check Samsung’s guidance for your market and model before relying on a general claim. Samsung’s legacy guide.

Google documents a fuller RCS experience
RCS can add typing indicators, read receipts, group-management options and high-resolution media. Google says these features can work in RCS conversations with iPhone users, but RCS availability depends on country, carrier, device and whether participants have RCS enabled. A feature listed by Google is not a guarantee that it will work with every contact or on every network. Google’s RCS overview.
Google says RCS uses Wi-Fi or mobile data. If a recipient does not have RCS, SMS/MMS remains available; mobile-data charges depend on your plan. Google’s RCS and SMS/MMS guidance.

When Samsung Messages may still suit an older Galaxy
For a device where Samsung Messages remains available—particularly one covered by Samsung’s Android 11-or-older legacy guide—the app has documented tools such as conversation search, pinned chats, categories, number blocking and Trash recovery. Samsung says deleted messages in Trash can be restored within 30 days. These are documented legacy features, not proof that Samsung Messages remains supported on newer devices or that every feature is available in every market. Samsung’s legacy guide.
Check local availability and carrier support before choosing to stay with it. The official sources cited here do not establish one universal winner across every country, carrier and Galaxy model.

What transfers when you switch to Google Messages?
Samsung says existing messages and conversations transfer automatically. Its U.S. transition page states: “All messages / conversations will automatically be transferred between Samsung Messages and Google Messages, but the time it takes to complete the transfer is subject to the amount of data.” Samsung says a full transfer may take approximately 24 hours, depending on how much data is involved; treat that as an estimate, not a guaranteed completion time. Samsung’s transition page.
Google says changing the default messaging app does not lose existing SMS/MMS messages. That assurance concerns SMS/MMS; it is not a promise that every Samsung-specific feature or non-interoperable message type will transfer. Google’s switching guidance.

RCS may pause briefly on some older phones
Samsung warns that devices released before 2022 may experience temporary RCS disruption during the transition. Samsung says RCS can resume if both sides use Google Messages; SMS/MMS remains available during the interruption. Samsung’s transition guidance.
What RCS encryption does—and does not—cover
Google says RCS conversations between Google Messages users are end-to-end encrypted. It also says RCS chats with iPhone users are not end-to-end encrypted. Do not assume that an RCS label means every conversation has the same encryption protection; the other participant’s app and platform matter. Google’s RCS overview.
How to choose for your situation
- You use a U.S. Galaxy with Android 12 or newer: Follow Samsung’s direction to Google Messages because Samsung Messages has been discontinued for this group.
- You use an older Galaxy where Samsung Messages is still available: Compare its legacy tools with the RCS and device-continuity options Google documents, then check local and carrier support.
- Your priority is richer chats: Google Messages is the clearer choice if RCS is supported by your carrier, region, device and the people you message.
- Your priority is encryption: Note whether a conversation is Google Messages-to-Google Messages or with an iPhone user; Google describes different end-to-end-encryption coverage for those cases.
- You rely on a tablet or watch: Confirm the specific device generation and carrier/model compatibility. Google and Samsung both document limits on continuity features.
