Telegram Not Working on WiFi [7 Latest Fixes 2024]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Telegram problems that only happen on WiFi are usually network-side: DNS resolution issues, router-level filtering, broken proxy settings, or time/auth mismatches. Mobile data often works because it bypasses the same local DNS and router policy.

This guide focuses on the most reliable fixes from 2024, written to work whether you’re using the Telegram app or Telegram Desktop. You’ll also get platform-specific steps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, and macOS.

Why Telegram Fails on WiFi (But Works on Mobile Data)

Telegram uses multiple connection paths (including MTProto) and relies on correct domain resolution and stable network routes. When WiFi fails, the cause is frequently one of these:

  • DNS issues: your router or ISP DNS can block or mis-resolve Telegram domains.
  • Router filtering: DNS filtering, parental controls, ad blockers, or “secure WiFi” features can interfere.
  • Proxy/VPN confusion: some apps or iOS features (like Private Relay) may route Telegram differently than your expectations.
  • Time/auth problems: incorrect date/time can break Telegram session authentication.
  • MTProto/proxy settings: Telegram may be stuck on a proxy route that only works on mobile data.

1) Restart your connection the right way (phone + router)

Start with the basics, but do it cleanly: restart your phone/tablet/PC, then reboot your router. WiFi can hold onto stale DNS and routing state even when the site itself “looks” reachable.

If you’re on a laptop, toggle WiFi off/on for 10 seconds before reconnecting. Then open Telegram and test sending a message.

2) Switch DNS on WiFi (try 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8)

DNS problems are one of the biggest causes of “Telegram works on data, not on WiFi.” Changing DNS often fixes it immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google). Set them in your device WiFi settings (or your router if you manage it), then fully reconnect WiFi.

3) Turn off VPN/Proxy/Private Relay and then retest

Even if Telegram used to work, a VPN/proxy update or a router policy change can break Telegram’s selected path. Disable VPN system-wide and remove any proxy in Telegram to test the base connection.

On iPhone and iPad, also check iCloud Private Relay (Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Private Relay) if you use it.

4) Fix device date and time (this quietly breaks Telegram auth)

Telegram authentication is time-sensitive. If your device time is off by even a noticeable margin, you can see endless “Connecting…” or failed message sending on WiFi.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable automatic time and timezone on the affected device, then reconnect to WiFi and retest Telegram.

5) Update Telegram and clear network cache/data

An outdated Telegram build or corrupted app state can interact badly with certain WiFi networks. Updating and clearing the app’s network state is a reliable reset.

Update Telegram from the app store, then clear cache (Android) or reinstall (iOS) if the app keeps failing only on WiFi.

6) Change Telegram connection settings (Proxy / MTProto) if you use them

If you already rely on a proxy, Telegram might be pinned to a proxy route that only works on mobile data. Removing and re-adding proxy settings can fix it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Telegram settings, review Proxy (or the connection options in Telegram Desktop), confirm you’re using the correct proxy type, and retest on WiFi.

7) Check router blocking (firewall, DNS filtering, and captive portal)

Routers can block Telegram at multiple layers: DNS filtering, category blocking, “smart security,” or even a captive portal that doesn’t behave consistently with apps.

If multiple devices on the same WiFi can’t use Telegram, the router policy is the prime suspect. Temporarily disable security/DNS filtering features and retest.

Platform-Specific Steps (Android, iPhone, Windows, macOS)

Use these steps if the generic fixes didn’t solve the issue quickly. They’re designed to match the UI and common settings you’ll actually see in 2024.

FAQs

Why does Telegram work on my phone’s mobile data but not on WiFi?

That pattern usually points to WiFi-specific DNS or router filtering. Mobile data typically bypasses your router’s DNS policy, so Telegram resolves and connects correctly there.

Will changing DNS to 1.1.1.1 definitely fix Telegram on WiFi?

It fixes many cases, but not all. If your router blocks Telegram using other mechanisms (firewall rules, security filtering, traffic shaping), DNS alone won’t be enough.

Should I use a VPN if Telegram won’t work on my WiFi?

A VPN can be a workaround, but it’s better to solve the WiFi cause (DNS and router policy). If you must use a VPN, keep it consistent and test after you disable any Telegram-specific proxy settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Telegram Desktop won’t connect on WiFi, but the mobile app does

That usually means your PC has a stale DNS cache, proxy settings, or a local network config issue. Flush DNS on Windows and confirm proxies are off; on macOS, update DNS and ensure all proxy checkboxes are disabled.

What if Telegram connects but calls/uploads fail on WiFi?

That points more toward traffic shaping, UDP restrictions, or router security features. Reboot the router, temporarily disable “smart security,” and retest. If you’re on an enterprise network, ask admins about UDP/traffic restrictions for Telegram.

Bottom Line

If Telegram isn’t working on WiFi, treat it like a network problem first: reboot, switch DNS, disable proxy/VPN features, and verify date/time. These steps target the most common 2024 failure modes that only appear on local WiFi.

When the issue affects multiple devices, router policy is the likely cause—temporary router security/DNS filtering changes usually reveal the fix. If you want, tell me your device type (Android/iPhone/Windows/macOS) and the exact error wording and I’ll narrow it to the fastest path.
