Install Tekkit through the official Technic Launcher, choose the exact pack your group wants, and make sure every player and the server use that same edition and version. Technic lists Tekkit Classic, Tekkit 2, and Tekkit as separate packs, each with its own server download. For a private game, download the matching server bundle, extract it, follow the files supplied with that bundle, and then configure access, permissions, backups, and networking for your setup.

What the Technic Launcher does
The Technic Launcher is the supported route for installing Tekkit on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Instead of assembling individual mods, the launcher downloads the pack definition and its required files, places them in a separate modpack directory, and starts the correct game profile. Technic describes the experience as being as easy as clicking play, but the important preparation happens before that click: you must select the right Tekkit entry and keep the client version aligned with the server.
A normal Minecraft installation and a Tekkit installation are not interchangeable. Tekkit includes a curated collection of technology, exploration, and related gameplay mods. A player who launches an unmodified Minecraft profile, a different Tekkit edition, or a different revision of the same edition may be unable to connect even when the Minecraft username is correct.

Choose the Tekkit edition before installing
Search results in the launcher can show several Tekkit entries. Treat the pack name as part of the server address: everyone joining one world must select the same entry, not merely a pack with a similar name.

The launcher and pack pages are the authority for the version currently available to you. If your friends already have a world, ask the host for the complete pack name and version before anyone installs. A world created in one entry should not be upgraded or moved to another entry merely because the names look related.
Install Tekkit with the Technic Launcher
1. Install the launcher
Download and install the official Technic Launcher for your operating system: Windows, macOS, or Linux. Open it after installation. The first launch may take longer while the launcher creates its working directories and checks its components.
2. Sign in
Use the account sign-in flow displayed by the launcher. A successful login is required before the game can be launched. If the login screen loops, first verify the account credentials and the launcher’s network access rather than reinstalling the modpack repeatedly.
3. Search for the exact pack
Use the launcher search field and enter the full name supplied by the host: Tekkit Classic, Tekkit 2, or Tekkit. Read the result carefully. Do not pick a similarly named user-created pack when the group intends to use an official entry.

4. Install the selected pack
Select the pack and click Install. The launcher downloads the modpack files and prepares a dedicated installation. Download time depends on your connection and the size of the pack. Leave the launcher open until the installation reports completion; interrupting it can leave a partial directory that looks installed but fails at launch.

After installation, launch the pack from the launcher. On the title screen, verify that you are in the intended Tekkit profile before creating a world or entering a server. If your group supplied a version number, compare it with the version shown by the launcher or pack details.
6. Match the server exactly
Before joining, confirm all of the following with the host:
- The pack entry is identical, including Classic, Tekkit 2, or the separate Tekkit entry.
- The version or revision is identical.
- The server was downloaded from the page for that same pack.
- No player has added, removed, or replaced mods in the installed profile.
Do not copy one player’s modified configuration over another installation unless the host specifically instructs the group to do so. Configuration changes can affect gameplay and, in some cases, prevent a client from loading.
Where Tekkit files are stored
The launcher can reveal the active installation without guesswork. In the modpack’s options, choose Modpack Options, then use Open or Open/Install Folder (the exact wording can vary by launcher build). That command is safer than browsing to a remembered path because locations are pack- and launcher-dependent.

A community resource lists these default Tekkit Classic locations. They are reference paths, not guarantees for every edition or installation:

These examples use the Classic directory name. Tekkit 2 or another pack can use a different directory, and a custom launcher location changes every path. Open the active folder before editing configuration, copying saves, or deleting files.
How to host a Tekkit server
Each official Tekkit pack page exposes a Server Download link. Download the server bundle belonging to the same edition and version that players install through the launcher. A server archive from another Tekkit entry is not a safe substitute.
Self-hosting on your own computer
Self-hosting gives you direct control over the files and world, but you are responsible for the operating system, Java runtime, storage, backups, and network access. The exact startup command and configuration names depend on the contents of the selected server archive, so use the instructions and scripts included with that archive rather than copying a command intended for another Tekkit release.
- Choose the edition and version. Write down the complete pack identity before downloading anything.
- Download the matching server bundle. Use the Server Download link on that pack’s official page, not a bundle for a similarly named entry.
- Extract to a dedicated folder. Keep the server outside the client modpack folder. A separate directory makes backups, permissions, and upgrades easier to manage.
- Read the included files. Look for the archive’s README, launch script, configuration files, and any first-run instructions. They specify the Java expectations and the correct way to start that release.
- Install or select the required Java runtime. The server bundle may require a particular Java generation. Use the requirement documented with that bundle; do not assume the runtime used by another Minecraft installation is suitable.
- Start it once locally. The first run normally creates configuration and world files. Stop it using the method documented by the bundle, then review the generated settings before inviting players.
- Set permissions and gameplay options. Configure the server’s operator permissions, whitelist or access controls, difficulty, world settings, and other options exposed by the supplied files. Keep a copy of the original configuration so you can restore it.
- Test from the host computer. Join locally with a client running the exact same Tekkit entry and version. This separates a mod or configuration problem from an Internet routing problem.
- Plan network access. Friends outside your home network need a reachable address and a permitted listening port. The correct port, firewall rule, and forwarding steps are version- and setup-dependent; inspect the selected bundle and your router documentation instead of applying a universal recipe.
- Back up before opening the server to others. Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration directories to separate storage, and keep dated backups before updates or major changes.
Never expose a server folder directly to the Internet or run it with more operating-system privileges than necessary. Keep the host machine patched, restrict administrative access, and share the connection details only with the intended players.

Using managed hosting
A managed Minecraft host can remove much of the machine and network administration. The provider supplies a server instance and usually handles the operating-system layer, while you still choose the pack, configure the world, manage player permissions, and decide when to update. Availability and controls differ, so verify support for the exact Tekkit edition and version before paying or uploading a world.

Choose self-hosting when you want full control and are comfortable maintaining a machine. Choose managed hosting when continuous availability and simpler network administration are worth an ongoing service fee. In either case, the server and every client must use the same pack and version.

Do not treat those ranges as guarantees. Allocate memory within the limits shown by your launcher and Java setup, leave enough RAM for the operating system, and watch for symptoms rather than assigning every available gigabyte. Frequent garbage-collection pauses, a launcher that closes during loading, or an operating system that begins swapping indicate that the computer is under pressure. A server that runs smoothly alone may need more headroom once several players explore new terrain simultaneously.
For a combined client-and-server machine, close unnecessary applications, use a fast and reliable storage device for the world, and avoid hosting while the computer is performing heavy downloads or updates. If the host remains unstable, moving the server to a separate computer or managed service is usually more effective than repeatedly changing client settings.
Troubleshooting common Tekkit problems
The launcher shows the wrong pack
Return to the search results and verify the full entry name. Classic, Tekkit 2, and Tekkit are separate choices. If the host says Tekkit 2 and your launcher is starting Tekkit Classic, uninstall or stop using the wrong profile and install the requested entry.
The game starts, but the server rejects the connection
Ask the host for the exact pack name and version, then compare it with the profile selected in your launcher. A mismatch in edition, revision, or modified files is the first thing to eliminate. Do not add random mods to make a message disappear; restore the official pack or reinstall it cleanly.

The launcher download is incomplete or repeatedly fails
Exit the launcher, reopen it, and retry the installation with a stable connection and sufficient disk space. If the same profile still fails, use Modpack Options to open the installation folder, remove only the incomplete pack directory after preserving any worlds you need, and install again. A clean reinstall should be performed only after confirming that the host’s pack and version are correct.
The server stops during startup
Read the server bundle’s own log and startup instructions. Confirm that the selected Java runtime matches the requirement documented with that archive, that the server directory is writable, and that the first-run files were allowed to finish generating. Avoid replacing the bundle’s scripts with commands copied from a different edition.
Friends cannot connect from outside the home network
First prove that the host can join locally. If local access works, investigate the operating-system firewall, router configuration, address supplied to friends, and whether the server is listening on the port documented by the bundle. Internet providers can also place connections behind carrier-grade routing that prevents inbound access. Because these details vary by network and server release, use the current archive instructions and router documentation rather than a one-size-fits-all port recipe.
The world or configuration disappeared
Use Modpack Options to confirm the active client folder and check that the server is pointing at the intended directory. A client save and a server world are separate locations. Restore from a dated backup only after stopping the server, and keep the restored copy separate until you verify that it loads correctly.

Do not update a working server and all clients at the same time without a rollback plan. Record the current pack entry and version, stop the server cleanly, and copy the world, configuration, and any custom scripts. Test the new server bundle with a copy of the world first. Have every player install the same target version before switching the live server. If the test fails, return to the recorded bundle and backup rather than attempting to repair the live world in place.
Keep client-side changes separate from server-side changes. A player should not edit the shared server configuration unless the host has asked for a specific, documented change. When an update introduces a new directory, preserve the old one until the new installation has been tested and backed up.
