If Rust shows no servers under Official, Community, or Modded, work through the client-side fixes first: raise Steam’s server-browser ping limit to 5000 per minute, launch the normal Rust branch, clear filters and enable Show Empty, leave beta branches, and temporarily disable VPN or firewall interference. If the list remains blank, use a direct connection or check the server’s query port.

Why Rust’s server list can be empty
Rust does not receive one permanent list that is guaranteed to look identical for every player. The client first asks Steam for Rust server records, then sends Source A2S queries to those servers. A server appears only when it answers those queries. Packet loss, geographic positioning, a server-side outage or attack, and problems on your own connection can therefore produce a slow, incomplete, or entirely empty browser.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

That two-stage process also explains why another player may see servers while you see none. Your IP-based region, filters, Steam settings, network path, or security software can change which query responses reach the game. An empty browser does not automatically mean that all Rust servers are offline.
Use this player-side fix order
Apply the steps in order. After each change, reopen the server browser and give it time to repopulate. The sequence starts with settings that most directly affect discovery and ends with network and security checks.

1. Raise Steam’s server-browser ping limit
- Open Steam.
- Select Steam > Settings > In-Game.
- Find Server browser pings / minute.
- Set the value to at least 5000.
- Close Settings, exit Steam completely, and start it again before testing Rust.
Facepunch’s guidance identifies 5000 pings per minute as the minimum setting to use when the list is missing servers. This is a query-frequency configuration threshold, not a claim that Rust has 5000 servers or that your computer will contact that many. A lower value can leave discovery incomplete, particularly when many servers are available or responses are slow.
2. Launch the normal Rust branch
Check your Steam library and start Rust, not Rust Staging Branch. Staging is a separate testing branch and generally has fewer servers. If you accidentally launch it, an unusually short list can look like a browser failure even though the client is working as designed.
3. Remove restrictive filters and show empty servers
In Rust’s server browser, clear search text, region restrictions, player-count limits, tags, and any other filters you do not need. Then enable Show Empty.
Valve hides empty servers by default in most browser views. Empty servers remain visible when they are in Official, Friends, History, or Favorites, but Community and Modded results can appear to vanish when those servers have no current players. Turning on Show Empty also refreshes Community and Modded results, so switch it off and on once if the list appears stale.
4. Leave beta branches and verify the installation
- In Steam, open your Rust library entry and choose Properties.
- Open the Betas tab.
- Opt out of beta branches by selecting the default option.
- After the branch changes, open the Installed Files section.
- Run Verify integrity of game files.
- Restart Steam and launch the ordinary Rust branch.
A client on a beta branch can behave differently from the current public build and may not match the server-browser environment most players use. Verification replaces damaged or missing files; it does not change your server filters, so check those separately.
5. Temporarily disable a VPN
Turn off your VPN, reconnect to your normal internet route, and restart Steam before checking the browser again. Facepunch says Rust’s server list is populated geographically from IP geolocation. A VPN can place you in an unexpected region and produce a sparse or irrelevant result set.
This test is temporary: if the list returns with the VPN off, the useful conclusion is that the VPN’s exit location or network path is affecting discovery. You can then decide whether to use a different exit location or leave the VPN disabled while playing.
6. Restart the modem or router
Shut down the modem or router, wait for it to complete its normal restart cycle, and then relaunch Steam and Rust. This can clear a transient routing, NAT, or packet-loss condition that prevents A2S responses from reaching the client.

7. Test firewall and antivirus interference
Security software can block Steam, Rust, or the UDP traffic used for server queries. Temporarily test with the relevant firewall or antivirus network protection disabled, or add the official Steam and Rust executables to its allowed-app list according to the product’s instructions. Do not leave protection disabled permanently.
After changing firewall or security rules, fully exit and restart Steam. Facepunch specifically recommends restarting Steam after firewall changes so the new permission state is applied to the running client. If the browser works only with protection disabled, restore protection and create a narrow allow rule rather than turning security off for normal play.

8. Confirm that Steam and Rust are online and current
Make sure Steam is not in Offline Mode, the Steam client has finished updating, and Rust has no pending download. Steam’s support guidance lists network and firewall conditions among causes of secure-connection failures. A client that is offline, partially updated, or unable to establish Steam’s secure connection may not populate the Rust browser correctly.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you observe | Most useful first checks | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| No servers in every category | Set 5000 pings per minute, restart Steam, check online status, then test VPN and firewall | A broad failure points to discovery settings or network/security interference rather than one server category |
| Official appears, but Community or Modded is empty | Clear filters and toggle Show Empty | Default empty-server hiding or a stale category query is more likely than a total connection failure |
| The list is short only when using a VPN | Disconnect the VPN and restart Steam | IP geolocation or the VPN route is changing the regional results |
| Rust Staging has few or no results | Launch the standard Rust branch | Staging normally has fewer available servers |
| The browser is blank, but a known endpoint connects with F1 | Use direct connection while checking filters and browser settings | The game can reach the server; discovery or query responses, not gameplay connectivity, are the failing part |
| Direct connection also fails | Check the address, UDP reachability, VPN/firewall state, and whether the server is online | The problem is not limited to the browser list |
Connect directly when the browser is still blank
If you know a server’s address, you can bypass the browser’s discovery step. At Rust’s main menu:
- Press F1 to open the console.
- Enter
connect IP:Port, replacingIP:Portwith the server’s actual endpoint. - Press Enter and wait for the connection attempt to finish.
Facepunch names BattleMetrics.com and Just-wiped.net as external places where players can look up a Rust server’s IP address and port. They are lookup options, not a guarantee that the server is online, accepting players, running the same game version, or reachable from your network. Copy the endpoint exactly; an incorrect port produces the same practical symptom as an offline server.
Direct connection is a diagnostic as well as a workaround. If it succeeds, keep using it while you repair the browser, and check filters, the ping setting, VPN routing, and firewall permissions. If it fails, verify the endpoint and investigate the server or network rather than repeatedly refreshing the list.
Do not launch RustClient.exe directly for secure servers
Launching RustClient.exe directly disables Easy Anti-Cheat. Facepunch states that this mode can connect only to EAC-unsecure servers, and EAC-unsecure servers do not appear in the normal Rust browser.
For official and ordinary community play, start Rust through its standard Steam launch so Easy Anti-Cheat is enabled. A direct executable launch can therefore create two confusing symptoms at once: the secure servers you expect are absent from the browser, and only an unusual unsecure server could accept the connection.

If you operate the Rust server
When multiple players cannot see one server, or a newly deployed server never appears despite correct client settings, inspect the server’s query configuration. The official Rust wiki requires both server.port and server.queryport to be open and reachable over UDP. The two ports must be different, and the query port is required for browser visibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsServer visibility checklist
- Confirm that
server.portis configured and open for UDP. - Confirm that
server.queryportis configured and open for UDP. - Ensure the two port numbers are not identical.
- Allow both ports through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Forward both UDP ports through the router or NAT device to the correct server machine.
- Check the hosting provider’s security groups, edge firewall, or DDoS rules for both ports.
- Restart the server after changing the port or firewall configuration, then test from an external connection.
A server can be running and accept a direct game connection while remaining absent from the browser if its query port is blocked. Conversely, opening only the game port does not satisfy the browser’s discovery requirement. Treat gameplay traffic and query traffic as separate checks.
Separate browser visibility from actual connectivity
Use these outcomes to choose the next action instead of repeating every fix indefinitely:
The list returns after changing settings
Keep the working change: the cause was probably the ping limit, branch selection, filters, beta state, or VPN geolocation. Re-enable only one setting at a time if you need it, checking the browser after each change so you know which option causes the regression.
The browser is empty but direct connect works
The server and your basic game connection are functional. Focus on Steam’s query rate, Rust filters, Show Empty, branch selection, VPN routing, and firewall rules. Save the server as a favorite after connecting so it remains easy to reach while discovery is being repaired.

Check the endpoint, server status, current game version, and whether the operator has changed ports or restricted access. If other servers work, the issue is likely specific to that server or its network exposure.
No servers work after all player-side checks
Compare results on another network, such as a trusted mobile hotspot, if available. A change in results indicates a local router, ISP path, firewall, or NAT problem. If every network shows the same failure, a broader Steam, Rust, or regional service incident is possible; wait for service recovery while keeping the client fully updated.
Keep the diagnosis focused
- Player control: Steam ping rate, branch, beta status, filters, VPN, router, and local security software.
- Server-owner control: distinct UDP game and query ports, host firewall, NAT forwarding, and provider security rules.
- Browser visibility: depends on Steam records plus successful Source A2S query responses.
- Direct-connect success: proves the endpoint can be reached even when discovery is failing.
- Secure play: requires the ordinary EAC-enabled Rust launch; EAC-unsecure servers are outside the normal browser.
Start with the 5000-ping setting, normal Rust branch, cleared filters, and Show Empty. Then test VPN and security software, restart the network and Steam, and use connect IP:Port when you have a known endpoint. If you run the server, verify both distinct UDP ports, because an inaccessible query port prevents browser visibility even when the server process itself is running.
