There is no controller style proven to be best for every Tekken 8 player. Start with the gamepad you already find comfortable, then consider an arcade stick or a leverless controller if you prefer its layout and can confirm it works with your platform. You can also try Tekken 8’s Special Style in-game before changing hardware.
Which controller should you choose for Tekken 8?
Choose by comfort, preferred movement and button layout, and compatibility—not by promises that a particular device will make you faster or more accurate. The available official sources establish which specific controllers are listed for each platform, but do not compare player performance.

- Standard gamepad: A sensible starting point if you already feel comfortable using its directional controls and face buttons.
- Arcade stick: Consider one if you prefer a joystick for direction and larger, separate buttons for attacks. Bandai Namco specifically lists the TEKKEN 7 Arcade Stick for PlayStation 4 for PS5 and Steam.
- Leverless controller: Consider this button-only directional layout if it appeals to you, but verify the exact model and platform: the official compatibility list does not confirm particular leverless models.
Changing layouts takes practice. A different controller is a preference choice, not a guaranteed competitive upgrade.

The list is platform-specific and is not a guarantee that every third-party arcade stick, adapter, or leverless controller will work. Before buying, check the exact model against the compatibility information and confirm its fit for your system.
What changes when you switch layouts?
Tekken 8 separates left punch, right punch, left kick, and right kick into four primary attack inputs. Its controls also include combined inputs, such as throws, and mapped actions for Heat and Rage. That makes button reach and comfort useful things to compare, but it does not establish that any one layout is superior. See Bandai Namco’s official control overview.

A gamepad keeps movement and attacks on a compact layout. An arcade stick puts direction on a joystick and attacks on separate buttons. A leverless controller uses buttons for direction as well. Which arrangement feels natural depends on the player; allow time to practise before deciding whether a new layout suits you.

Tekken 8 offers Arcade Style and Special Style, and players can switch between them during a battle. The official battle guide describes Arcade Style as “The original control style for skilled players who want greater freedom”. It describes Special Style as “A new style enabling players to experience the aerial combos and situation-specific actions which Tekken is famous for – at the push of a single button”.

In Special Style, recommended moves and combos are assigned to attack buttons. It gives new players a way to explore assisted controls without first changing controllers. It is an option to try, not a promise that it will suit every player or replace Arcade Style for every purpose.

Check the current rules for the specific event and confirm your button configuration before a match. The European Tekken Cup 2024 rules required players to check buttons before a match and prohibited changing configuration after it began. Those requirements apply to that competition; do not assume they describe every event’s rules.
