TeamViewer 15.40.8 was a genuine TeamViewer desktop release published on March 23, 2023. TeamViewer listed it for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its documented change was a narrow bug fix for company devices that could fail to load in the device list—not a major feature, interface or security release.
By August 18, 2026, 15.40.8 is a legacy build. Use it only for a documented compatibility or recovery requirement in a controlled environment; for ordinary installations, obtain a currently supported release from TeamViewer.
What TeamViewer 15.40.8 is
“TeamViewer 15.40.8” identifies a version of the TeamViewer remote-access client, not a separate product. The official Windows changelog records the release on March 23, 2023, and TeamViewer’s platform listings show the same version number for macOS and Linux.
The installers are platform-specific. A Windows package cannot be substituted for the macOS or Linux package, and the version number alone does not identify whether the package is the full client, Host or QuickSupport edition, or whether a Windows build is 32-bit or 64-bit.

TeamViewer’s release entry is available in its official changelog; the broader changelog index and 15.40 platform listings separate the operating-system entries.
What changed in 15.40.8?
The documented fix
The release notes describe one common problem: company devices could fail to load in the device list. In practical terms, this concerns devices associated with a TeamViewer account, company profile or managed-device group. It does not necessarily refer to every computer encountered through a one-time QuickSupport session.
What the changelog does not establish
TeamViewer did not publish a reproduction procedure, affected account types, licensing conditions, interface-specific limitation or explanation of whether the cause was client-side, account synchronization or a service issue. The note also does not announce new remote-control capabilities, a redesigned interface, broad compatibility changes or a security feature.
The same fix is shown in the Windows, macOS and Linux 15.40 listings. That confirms platform coverage in TeamViewer’s changelog, but it should not be read as proof that the internal implementation or every symptom was identical on all three operating systems.

This was a maintenance patch, not a major TeamViewer 15 milestone.
Does it fix an empty or missing company-device list?
It may help when the symptom is the specific 15.40.8-era device-list defect. An empty list can also have unrelated causes, including an incorrect account, group permissions, network filtering, a service problem or a licensing change. Use this diagnostic sequence:
- Open TeamViewer and check the installed version. Depending on the interface, open Help or the account/application menu, then choose About TeamViewer or the equivalent version-information command.
- Confirm that the signed-in account is the intended account and that the device belongs to the correct company, group or managed-device list.
- Sign out and sign in again, then restart TeamViewer. Restart the computer if the client or service appears stuck.
- Verify internet access and check whether endpoint security, a proxy or firewall is blocking TeamViewer.
- Compare the list on another TeamViewer client or in the TeamViewer web interface, if that option is available to your account.
- If the problem persists, test a supported current release on a non-production machine, preserve logs and record the account and endpoint details before contacting TeamViewer support.
These are general diagnostic steps; the one-line release note does not promise that every empty device list was caused by this bug.
Does 15.40.8 restore TeamViewer VPN?
No official 15.40.8 release note announces VPN restoration. Comments on the TeamViewer Community release page say VPN was no longer included in the free version, while one user reported downgrading to 15.40.8 to regain access. Those are community reports, not a universal feature guarantee.

VPN availability can depend on the account, license, platform, rollout state and the other endpoint’s version. Downgrading solely for VPN can leave a remote-access client exposed to older security and compatibility problems, so verify the current licensing position with TeamViewer before changing versions.
Should you install it in 2026?
For most users, no. Use the current release offered through TeamViewer’s official product page and download page. Do not assume those pages still provide the exact 15.40.8 build.
Keeping 15.40.8 can be defensible only when all of these conditions apply:
- A legacy operating system or tested line-of-business workflow cannot yet be upgraded.
- The organization accepts the security and support risk and has documented the exception.
- The client is restricted to a controlled network with strong authentication and limited inbound exposure.
- The installer comes from an approved repository, TeamViewer support or a digitally verifiable internal archive.
- A migration plan and a tested replacement exist.
Never treat an old remote-access application as safe merely because it still launches. Do not use random “old versions” download sites, and do not expose an obsolete client directly to the internet to preserve a legacy workflow.

Older Windows compatibility is not the same as safety
TeamViewer later announced that active servicing for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 ended on April 29, 2025. Its notice identifies version 15.64 as the last version supporting those systems and says 15.65 and later are incompatible with them: TeamViewer’s older-Windows servicing notice.
That makes 15.40.8 part of the older-version compatibility landscape, but not a preferred or secure choice. TeamViewer’s lifecycle policy describes active maintenance as including critical fixes, security updates, operating-system compatibility, non-security updates and support services until a subsequent software version is released. A 2023 build should therefore be treated as limited-maintenance legacy software.

Normal installation
For a new deployment, use TeamViewer’s current official distribution channels. Confirm the operating system, package type, licensing and endpoint requirements before installation. Historical availability of 15.40.8 should be verified directly with TeamViewer rather than assumed.
Enterprise deployment
Organizations may need a full client, Host, QuickSupport, 32-bit or 64-bit package, MSI or mass-deployment workflow, and account assignment. Because exact switches and registry paths for 15.40.8 are not established here, use TeamViewer’s deployment documentation or support instead of copying unverified commands.

Legacy recovery
If a rollback is unavoidable, obtain the installer from an approved company repository, an existing licensed account or TeamViewer support. Check its digital integrity, document the exact package and version, isolate the machine and restrict access while planning an upgrade.
Mixed-version connections
Do not assume that 15.40.8 will work identically with every newer TeamViewer endpoint. Interoperability can depend on client versions, server-side policy, account or subscription status, operating-system support, the feature being used and whether the session is LAN-based or internet-based. Test the exact host-and-support-client pairing, including authentication and file transfer, before relying on it operationally.
