Xbox Cloud Gaming lets you stream many Xbox games to select Samsung and LG smart TVs, or supported Amazon Fire TV devices, without owning an Xbox console. You need a Microsoft account, a compatible controller, a Game Pass plan that includes cloud gaming for most titles, and a reliable connection. Xbox recommends at least 20 Mbps download speed, preferably through Ethernet or 5GHz Wi-Fi. Check the current device list at Xbox’s TV compatibility page because support varies by model, software version, country, plan and game.
What you need
- A supported Samsung or LG TV, or a compatible Amazon Fire TV device.
- A Microsoft/Xbox account.
- A controller supported by the TV or streaming device.
- A Game Pass plan that includes cloud gaming for most games.
- A stable internet connection; Xbox recommends at least 20 Mbps download speed.
The game runs on Microsoft’s remote servers and is streamed to your screen. The TV is not downloading or running the game locally, so you do not need an Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X or gaming PC.

Which TVs and devices support Xbox Cloud Gaming?
LG smart TVs
Xbox lists select LG TVs running webOS 24 or newer. Some 2022 and 2023 models may qualify after updating to software version 23.20.01 or later, but the model year alone is not enough. Check the exact model number, installed software and whether the Xbox app appears in the LG Gaming Portal or app store.

Samsung smart TVs
Xbox lists select Samsung smart TVs from 2020 onward, along with select Samsung monitors from 2022 onward. “Select” does not mean every model from those years works. Samsung’s Gaming Hub compatibility list is the other reference to check.

Amazon Fire TV
If your television is unsupported, Xbox lists these Fire TV options:
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max (first generation)
- Fire TV Cube (third generation)
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max (second generation)
- Fire TV Stick 4K (second generation)
A television having an HDMI port does not make it compatible. Generic Android TV, Google TV, Roku TV and older Fire TV models should not be assumed to support the Xbox app. Availability also depends on your market.
Computer connected to the TV
A Windows PC, Mac, Chromebook, tablet or phone can run Xbox Cloud Gaming through a supported browser or app, with HDMI or wireless display output to the TV. In this arrangement the computer or mobile device runs the session; the TV is only the display.

Which Game Pass plan do you need?
For most cloud games, Xbox requires an active Game Pass subscription and a game supported for cloud streaming. Xbox’s plan page checked on August 18, 2026 described cloud gaming on multiple tiers:
| Plan | Xbox’s listed game count | Cloud benefit described by Xbox |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | 50+ games | Cloud gaming included |
| Premium | 200+ games | Cloud gaming with shorter wait times |
| Ultimate | 500+ games | Best cloud quality and shortest wait times, plus EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics |
Plan names, libraries, benefits and prices can change. The retrieved U.S. page displayed masked prices such as “$XX.XX/month,” so check the live Game Pass page at signup. Ultimate is not automatically required for every TV game.
Some free-to-play games may be available from the cloud without the same subscription requirement, but this is title- and region-dependent.

Sometimes. Xbox allows selected purchased games to be streamed, but buying an Xbox game does not automatically make it cloud-playable. The title, version, add-ons, region and account must be supported. Check the live catalog at Xbox Cloud Gaming before buying a game for this purpose.
What games are available?
These are separate categories:
- Games installed on an Xbox console.
- Games included with your particular Game Pass plan.
- Games enabled for Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Selected games you own that Xbox permits you to stream.
A game can be in Game Pass but unavailable in the cloud, available on console but not on a TV app, or removed from the catalog later. Xbox says availability, features, title counts and platform support vary by region, plan, platform and time.

Controller and internet requirements
Controllers
Xbox supports Xbox controllers, Sony PlayStation controllers and other verified compatible controllers, subject to the device and connection method. A current Xbox Wireless Controller is the least ambiguous choice. Pair it to the TV or Fire TV device—not to an Xbox console. Bluetooth support differs by model; wired USB may work on some setups but is not guaranteed. Headsets, racing wheels, keyboards and other specialist accessories may have limited support. Xbox’s controller guidance is available at this support page.
Network quality
Xbox recommends at least 20 Mbps download speed, Ethernet where possible, or 5GHz Wi-Fi. That figure is a recommendation, not a guarantee. Latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi congestion, router placement, household streaming, ISP routing and distance to the cloud server can matter more than headline speed. Test at the TV, close large downloads and avoid congested mesh links.
Troubleshooting
The Xbox app is missing
- Update the TV or Fire TV firmware.
- Restart the device and router.
- Search the app store for “Xbox.”
- Check Samsung Gaming Hub or LG Gaming Portal.
- Verify the exact model, account region and supported-country list.
- Try Xbox Cloud Gaming in a computer or mobile browser and connect that device to the TV by HDMI.
Do not treat unofficial APK sideloading as the normal fix; it can introduce compatibility, security and account problems.

The game is not listed
Search the current catalog at xbox.com/en-US/play. Confirm that your plan includes the game, the title is cloud-enabled, the game remains available and your region and device are supported.
The controller will not pair
Charge it, disconnect it from other devices, put it in pairing mode and test it in the TV or Fire TV Bluetooth settings before opening the game. If it still fails, verify the exact controller and device combination on Xbox’s support page.
The stream is blurry, laggy or disconnects
Use Ethernet or 5GHz Wi-Fi, move the router closer, stop competing downloads and restart the router. A fast but unstable connection can still produce poor play. Persistent latency may reflect regional routing or server distance rather than a fault with the TV.

Is cloud gaming a replacement for an Xbox console?
| Cloud gaming is a good fit when you… | A console is the better choice when you… |
|---|---|
| Already own a supported TV and want occasional or single-player gaming. | Need offline play, local installs or predictable performance. |
| Have stable Ethernet or 5GHz Wi-Fi. | Play competitively where input latency matters. |
| Want to avoid buying another box and accept a subscription. | Need the broadest compatibility, specialist peripherals or disc support. |
| Value quick access without downloads or storage management. | Require consistent image quality and console-level control. |
Cloud gaming can be convenient and cheaper upfront, but it may involve queues, variable image quality, limited resolution or audio outputs, online-only saves, restricted purchases or user-generated content, and unavailable games. It does not promise fixed 4K or console-equivalent performance. Xbox documents these limitations on its Xbox-on-TV page.
When a console makes more sense
Choose an Xbox Series S or Series X if your internet is unreliable or capped, you want offline gaming, compete online, need local performance, use specialist accessories, or want the full Xbox ecosystem. Choose cloud gaming first if your existing TV is supported, your connection is stable and convenience matters more than maximum performance.
The Bottom Line
Xbox Cloud Gaming lets you play many Xbox titles on a supported Samsung or LG TV or compatible Fire TV device without a console. Verify the exact model and region, use a compatible controller and stable 20 Mbps-plus connection, and check the live cloud catalog before subscribing or buying a game.
