You can often reuse an existing test suite with LAVA by adapting what its runner reports, rather than rewriting the test logic. The adapter identifies each test case, maps its outcome, and emits the signals LAVA can interpret. A 2018 presentation by Tim Orling demonstrates this pattern for pytest, BATS, and OpenEmbedded ptest; its code examples are historical, not a compatibility guide for current versions.
How a test runner communicates with LAVA
In the 2018 examples, LAVA observes output after a test run begins. The test runner or an adapter writes recognizable markers that identify test boundaries and outcomes. Orling summarized the approach this way: “Once the test run has begun, LAVA is just observing.” That is a description of the talk’s approach, not a guarantee about every current LAVA release.
The presentation uses three signals:
LAVA_SIGNAL_STARTTCmarks the start of a test case.LAVA_SIGNAL_ENDTCmarks its end.LAVA_SIGNAL_TESTCASEcarries a test-case ID and a result such aspassorfail.
With those signals in its output, a run can be represented as individual test-result records instead of one undifferentiated command result. The adapter’s job is to preserve the case identity and translate the framework’s own status into the result vocabulary emitted by the example.
Where to put the adapter
The talk illustrates three integration points. The best fit depends on how the runner exposes test events and whether you can change its reporting behavior without changing the tests themselves.

These are examples from Orling’s 2018 presentation, not instructions verified against today’s LAVA, pytest, BATS, or OpenEmbedded ptest releases. Check the current project documentation and APIs before adapting the code or relying on a particular command-line option or hook.
What the LAVA test definition contributes
The presentation’s “Lava-Test Test Definition 1.0” YAML examples provide metadata, functional scope, device labels, and run steps. The examples refer to x86 and QEMU targets. They show how the test invocation and target context fit into the setup; they do not establish a current hardware-compatibility list or validate a particular device model.

In practical terms, keep the responsibilities distinct: the test definition describes what to run and the target context, while the reporting adapter makes individual test outcomes recognizable in the output. The exact definition format and supported fields should be checked for the LAVA version you use.
Decide whether the tests can stay unchanged
Basic pass/fail reporting can be added at a reporting hook, formatter, or runner layer in the examples, which can keep the test logic intact. That does not mean every kind of result can be captured without test changes.

For ordinary test outcomes
- Obtain each test’s identity and outcome from the framework’s reporting interface or runner.
- Map the framework’s statuses to the result values your LAVA integration emits.
- Print the start, end, and testcase signals in a format LAVA can capture.
- Use the test definition to invoke the adapted runner in the intended target context.
The pytest sample maps passed, skipped, and xfailed outcomes to LAVA pass, and other outcomes to fail. That mapping is a choice in the talk’s example, not a rule that every project should adopt. Decide explicitly how your suite should represent skips, expected failures, errors, and other framework-specific states.
For measurements
The deck also shows a MEASUREMENT field and an optional UNITS field. Its example emits a numeric value, with another example adding units. The measurement method uses a decorator and has test functions return a measurement and units; Orling notes that this requires modifying the test cases and “somewhat breaks the original intent (keep the tests unmodified for LAVA).” If measurements are essential, weigh that instrumentation against the goal of leaving the suite untouched.

A practical adaptation checklist
- Choose the reporting layer. Use a framework hook when it exposes per-test reports, a formatter when output customization is available, or a runner change when the runner owns test execution and reporting.
- Define the result mapping. Decide how framework outcomes—including skipped or expected-failure cases—should be represented, rather than assuming the 2018 pytest sample’s mapping fits your suite.
- Emit one complete record per case. Include a stable case ID and the start, end, and result signals shown by the integration pattern.
- Add measurements only if needed. Format the measurement and optional units for capture, and account for the test-level changes required by the presentation’s example.
- Connect the invocation to a test definition. Include the relevant metadata, target context, and run step, then validate the definition against your installed LAVA version.
- Verify against current versions. The talk does not confirm current LAVA behavior or current pytest, BATS, or ptest APIs; check those before copying or porting its examples.
