Schools should teach students how to use and question AI, not impose a blanket ban. Students may encounter AI tools outside class, while schools still have a duty to protect privacy, preserve assessment integrity and ensure that students learn foundational skills. The evidence does not show that AI is categorically better than traditional teaching—or that routine access reliably improves lasting learning. The more useful question is when AI serves a learning goal, and what safeguards make its use responsible.
Why AI literacy belongs in education
AI literacy is not simply knowing how to operate a chatbot. The OECD and European Commission’s 2026 framework describes it through the knowledge, skills and attitudes learners need to understand AI, critically assess its outputs and use it ethically and creatively. Teaching those abilities gives students a chance to practise asking what an AI system can and cannot establish, checking its answers, and deciding whether its use is appropriate for a particular assignment. A ban may prevent AI use in a particular classroom or task, but by itself it does not teach students how to recognize unreliable output or make ethical choices when they encounter these tools elsewhere.
That is an argument for education, not unrestricted access. UNESCO’s 2023 guidance calls for human-centered, age-appropriate use, with attention to privacy, ethical validation and pedagogical design. What AI might contribute—and what that does not prove
“AI in education” covers unlike uses. A general-purpose chatbot drafting an answer is not the same intervention as a teacher using a tool to prepare lesson materials, or a purpose-built adaptive learning system. Each raises different questions about the learning objective, the student’s age, oversight, data handling and how learning will be assessed.
Potential uses for teachers and learners
An OECD and Education International discussion paper describes possible uses such as drafting lesson plans and creating opportunities for critical thinking. These are possibilities, not guaranteed results. Teachers and learners need the capacity to review, correct and adapt generated material rather than treat it as authoritative. For example, a teacher might ask students to compare an AI-generated explanation with a trusted source, identify unsupported claims and revise the explanation. That can make checking and revision part of the assignment. It is an application of the guidance’s principles, not proof that this activity produces better learning than a well-designed non-AI lesson.

Task performance is not the same as learning
A student may produce a stronger answer with help from a tool without retaining the knowledge or being able to apply it independently later. The OECD says robust, large-scale independent evidence proving that AI enhances student learning is lacking, and cautions that better performance on a study task may not translate into knowledge acquisition. Choose the method for the learning goal
AI versus traditional learning is a false either-or. Unaided practice may be the right method when students need to build recall or demonstrate independent writing. Structured AI use may fit a task whose goal is to assess AI literacy, evaluate sources, revise explanations or compare competing accounts. Those are practical applications of the cited principles, not experimentally established claims that one approach wins in general.

What a responsible school policy should cover
Replacing a blanket ban with guided use only works if the school sets practical boundaries. UNESCO’s guidance emphasizes human-centered, age-appropriate use, privacy protection, ethical validation and pedagogical design; these principles point toward a policy that distinguishes permitted learning activities from assessments where independent work is the point.

- Purpose: State what students should learn from using a tool, rather than allowing use simply because it is available.
- Age and supervision: Choose activities appropriate to students’ age and provide suitable adult oversight.
- Privacy: Set clear rules for protecting personal and sensitive information when students or staff interact with AI tools.
- Verification: Require students or teachers to review important claims and correct generated material before relying on it.
- Disclosure and authorship: Explain when students must identify AI assistance and how they should demonstrate their own understanding.
- Assessment boundaries: Specify when AI is prohibited because an assessment measures unaided knowledge or skill, and when guided use is allowed.
- Access and equity: Consider whether all students can participate under the same conditions before making an AI-dependent activity part of required work.
Policies can encourage some uses and restrict others; governance need not mean either unconditional access or a school-wide prohibition. The practical alternative to a blanket ban
A school can protect learning without pretending students will never encounter AI. Teach students how to assess and use these systems responsibly; allow use only where it supports a defined learning objective; require human review; protect privacy; and reserve clear restrictions for exams and tasks that measure unaided skill. That approach treats AI as a tool to be evaluated—not as a replacement for teaching, independent practice or human judgment.
