TCL’s new P80 phones make a paperlike display feel like a practical phone feature, not just a foldable-phone talking point. That is why Apple’s separately described nano-texture finish on the iPhone Duo’s inner OLED sounds more compelling: both point toward a less reflective, more reading-friendly screen, but there is no evidence that they use the same construction or perform alike.
What TCL showed with its paperlike AMOLED phones
At IFA Berlin 2026, TCL revealed the P80 series. TechRadar’s September 3 hands-on report says the P80 Ultra and P80 Pro pair AMOLED displays with TCL’s nxtPaper technology. The author describes switching display modes and seeing reduced glare and reflections during hands-on use at TCL’s showcase; those are personal observations, not laboratory measurements or a long-term assessment. TechRadar’s report is the basis for the description.

Two display modes for different priorities
According to TechRadar, the nxtPaper key offers two modes. Max Ink Mode is intended to reduce distractions and power consumption while reading. Paper Mode aims for a paperlike feel and includes customizable eye-care settings. These are distinct presets, not evidence that the screen becomes e-ink or that either mode has a proven medical benefit.

What the reported P80 Ultra specifications do—and do not—tell us
TechRadar lists the P80 Ultra with a 6.83-inch AMOLED display, 1.5K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, peak brightness of 3,200 nits, and a 5,800mAh battery. Those figures describe the report’s listed specifications; they do not measure reflection control, reading comfort, or battery life in either nxtPaper mode. They should not be treated as final market specifications without confirmation from TCL.

What Apple says about the iPhone Duo’s screens
Apple specifies a 7.6-inch folding OLED inner display with a nano-texture finish, alongside a 5.4-inch OLED outer display. Apple also lists Always-On and adaptive ProMotion up to 120Hz. Those official details are on Apple’s iPhone Duo page.
The contrast with TCL is interesting but limited. TCL’s reported implementation combines AMOLED with nxtPaper technology on P80 Ultra and P80 Pro phones; Apple names a nano-texture finish on the iPhone Duo’s inner OLED. The descriptions do not establish shared materials, identical optical behavior, or comparable results. TCL’s report discusses selectable modes, while Apple’s cited specifications do not describe an equivalent paper mode.

Why a matte inner screen could matter on a foldable
A foldable gives its owner a much larger screen to read on than a typical phone when opened. If a less reflective finish makes that inner display more pleasant to use under bright or reflective conditions, it could make the large screen feel more useful for reading. TCL’s reported mode choices suggest one possible approach: let users prioritize a paperlike presentation or a more reading-focused, lower-distraction mode. Apple’s stated nano-texture finish raises a related possibility for the Duo, but Apple’s specifications alone do not tell us how noticeable the effect will be in everyday use.
That distinction matters: “paperlike” describes an intended experience, not a guarantee of paper-like contrast, reduced eye strain, or protection for vision. The available material contains no controlled comparison of TCL and Apple, and no comparative measurements for reflections, readability, color, battery impact, or eye comfort. No eye-comfort or anti-glare statistic can responsibly be inferred from these descriptions.

- If you want a foldable reading screen: Apple’s stated inner display is 7.6 inches, but its finish’s real-world readability and comfort are not measured in the cited material.
- If eye comfort is the deciding factor: Neither description is evidence of a medical benefit. Treat comfort as something to assess in person rather than assume from the finish name.
Why TCL changes the way the iPhone Duo sounds
TCL’s P80 series is useful context because it makes the idea of a phone display with a paperlike option concrete: the reported approach combines AMOLED with nxtPaper and offers selectable modes. Apple’s iPhone Duo is a different implementation on a foldable, and its nano-texture inner screen remains an official specification rather than a tested experience in the cited material. That is enough to make the Duo’s display more intriguing—not enough to declare either screen better.
