A standby light can offer clues, but it does not diagnose every model: an unlit light can mean the TV is on or has no power, while a slow pulse may be normal during startup or an update. Work through these six safe checks before assuming the TV needs repair.
What the standby light can—and can’t—tell you
Indicator behavior depends on the TV family, model, and software. On TCL Roku TVs, the light is off when the screen is active and may also be off when the TV has no power. It is on when the TV is off in standby. A slow pulse can occur during startup or a USB update, and the light may dim briefly when the TV receives a remote command. These are Roku-specific descriptions, not a universal code for every TCL TV. TCL’s Roku TV status-light guide explains those states.

For Android TVs, TCL says LED settings and behavior vary by model, and some models do not let you turn the status light off. Don’t infer a failed power board from a dark or blinking indicator alone. TCL’s Android TV indicator guidance is specific to that platform.
Try these six checks in order
1. Confirm power at the TV and outlet
- If the power cord can be removed from the TV, unplug and firmly reseat it at both ends.
- Test the outlet with another device, or try a known-working outlet.
- For this test, connect the TV directly to the wall. Bypass any power strip, surge protector, extension cord, or smart plug.
- Do not use a cord that is visibly damaged.
TCL’s no-power troubleshooting guide recommends checking the cord and outlet and temporarily bypassing power accessories.

2. Unplug the TV long enough to reset
Unplug the TV for at least 60 seconds. If it has a physical power button, hold that button for about 15 seconds while the TV is unplugged. Reconnect the TV directly to the wall and try turning it on. Quickly unplugging and reconnecting may not leave enough time for the system to reset, according to TCL’s no-power guide.
TCL’s Android TV button guidance describes a separate 30-second restart procedure. That timing is for the procedure described in that guide; don’t combine it with the 60-second no-power procedure as if the instructions were interchangeable. See TCL’s Android TV physical-button guidance.

3. Use the TV’s physical power button
Look underneath the TV, along its side, or on the back. Button placement varies, so check the quick-start guide or manual for your model if you can’t find it. Try the button once after reconnecting power.
If the TV starts with its physical button, the TV is receiving power; focus next on the remote rather than assuming a TV hardware failure.

4. Check the remote
- Replace the batteries and check that they are oriented correctly.
- Move closer to the TV and remove anything blocking the signal path.
- If the TV starts but remote commands remain unreliable, check whether the remote needs to be paired for your model.
Remote battery size and pairing steps depend on the remote and TV model; use the markings in the remote’s battery compartment and the model’s instructions rather than guessing.
5. Disconnect attached devices
Unplug the TV from power, then disconnect HDMI and USB devices, including consoles, soundbars, streaming boxes, and other accessories. Reconnect only the TV’s power cord and try to start it. If it works, unplug it again and reconnect devices one at a time, testing after each addition. This helps identify whether an attached device or connection is involved.

6. Check whether it is on with a black screen
A black screen is not proof that the TV has no power. Look and listen for signs of activity:
- Does the indicator change when you press a remote button?
- Can you hear sound, see a startup logo, or notice the screen briefly glow?
- Does the TV react when you press Home?
If the TV responds or produces sound, check that the selected input is correct and that connected-device cables are secure. TCL’s Canada no-video guidance covers a separate symptom: a TV that turns on but shows no video. Its suggested checks include the indicator, cables, and restarting the TV.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Unplug the TV and stop using it if you notice smoke, sparks, a burning smell, liquid ingress, or visible damage. Do not open the chassis or attempt to replace internal power components.
Contact TCL support if the TV still has no power after these checks, repeatedly shuts off immediately, or keeps blinking without reaching startup. Before contacting support, have the model and serial numbers, approximate purchase timing, light behavior, any sounds or screen activity, and the steps you tried ready. Check the support options and terms available for your exact model and location; repair pricing, warranty coverage, and service availability depend on those details.
