The TCL QM8L is a high-end 2026 Mini LED TV, but the available evidence does not prove it is worth an upgrade for every buyer. TechRadar’s review of a 75-inch set found strong color and brightness positioning, while its lab measured 90.34% BT.2020 color coverage in Filmmaker mode—not the 100% typically claimed by TCL. What the QM8L is—and where it sits
TCL describes the QM8L as a 2026 SQD-Mini LED 4K UHD HDR smart TV with Google TV. Its US product listing covers 65-, 75-, 85-, and 98-inch sizes. RTINGS places it in TCL’s high-end range, as the successor to the QM8K and between the QM7L and flagship X11L. What independent testing says about picture performance
TechRadar reports that its reviewer used a 75-inch QM8L regularly for a couple of weeks, watching streaming shows and movies, listening to music, and playing PS5 games. Its objective measurements were conducted in Future Publishing’s TV testing lab with a Klein K-10A colorimeter, Jeti 15VA spectroradiometer, Murideo Six G 8K Metal test pattern generator, and Portrait Displays’ Calman software. Color coverage: a measured result, not a universal specification
TCL markets its Deep Color System as typically reaching 100% of the BT.2020 color ratio, while warning that results can vary with environment, standards, equipment, and production variation. TechRadar says its measurement did not reach that claim: it reported 90.34% BT.2020 coverage in Filmmaker mode. That figure belongs to TechRadar’s stated test conditions and mode; it should not be read as the result every QM8L will produce, nor as a direct measure of every aspect of perceived picture quality. What the evidence does not establish
The sources available here do not provide a matched, controlled comparison of QM8L brightness, contrast, local-dimming behavior, blooming, reflections, or gaming input behavior against the QM7L, X11L, and QM8K. The QM8L’s Mini LED local dimming and Super Quantum Dot technology define its feature set, but those labels alone cannot show how much better it will look than your current television in your room.
Is it worth upgrading from your current TV?
The answer is most likely to be yes if you are moving from an older or lower-tier set and specifically want a large-screen, high-end Mini LED model. It is harder to justify replacing a recent premium TV based on the evidence here: there is no side-by-side dataset showing a consistent improvement over the QM8K or rival models, and current same-size prices and availability are not established as stable facts.

- Consider it if you need a new TV, want one of the listed large sizes, and can confirm that the price fits your budget for the exact size and regional model.
- Wait or compare first if you already own a recent Mini LED set, if color accuracy is your main reason to upgrade, or if the price premium over another candidate is substantial.
- Check your room and setup before choosing a size: compare screen dimensions with viewing distance, confirm the stand or wall-mount arrangement, and assess how much daylight and reflection affect your viewing area. Verdict
The QM8L has credible high-end credentials and a useful independent review, but the evidence does not support the headline claim that it has been proved worth upgrading to in our lab: the reported lab work belongs to TechRadar, and the available measurements do not settle the value question against your current TV. Treat it as a candidate to shortlist, then decide using a same-size price comparison and the performance traits that matter in your room.
