The C8L is a Super Quantum Dot LCD television available in 55-, 65-, 75-, 85- and 98-inch variants. Expert Reviews reported very high HDR brightness in measurements of its test sample, but the result varied with both the test window and picture mode. Using Calman Ultimate, the outlet measured more than 4,500 cd/m² on a 5% HDR window in Standard mode, 3,600 cd/m² on a 10% window in Standard mode, and 3,100 cd/m² on a 10% window in Filmmaker Mode. These are measurements under specific test conditions, not one universal peak-brightness figure or a guarantee for every unit.

Colour coverage was also impressive in that sample: Expert Reviews measured essentially 100% of the P3 gamut and 91.7% of BT.2020. The reviewer’s overall assessment was that the picture, HDR and gaming support were particularly strong. The measurements support that verdict, while remaining specific to the tested television and method.

The clearest caution is the 65-inch model: Expert Reviews judged its price jump hard to justify relative to the smaller C8L and the C7L. That does not establish which model is the better buy at today’s prices; compare current prices for the exact size and local SKU before deciding. For larger screens, the listed price rises with size, so measure your room and viewing distance before paying for a bigger panel.
How does it compare with the C7L and C8K?
The review’s size-dependent value criticism makes the C7L especially relevant when considering the 65-inch C8L. The available review material does not provide a directly comparable numerical test table for the C7L, so it does not establish a precise brightness, colour or price-performance advantage across the two models.

Compared with the prior C8K, What Hi-Fi notes the C8L’s increased dimming-zone count and new Super Quantum Dot technology, but its available result does not provide a directly comparable numerical test table. A reliable buying comparison therefore needs to use the exact screen size and local price, and, where available, like-for-like HDR measurements with the same window size and picture mode. What Hi-Fi’s C8L listing provides its assessment, but does not settle a numerical head-to-head from the cited material.
What are the main drawbacks?
- Sound can be inconsistent. Expert Reviews flags sound performance as a caveat, so buyers who care about audio should assess the built-in speakers for their room and consider whether separate audio equipment is appropriate.
- The design is bulky. Check available cabinet space or the intended wall position, and confirm mount compatibility against the specific size and SKU rather than assuming one mount fits the range.
- Value is not uniform across sizes. The reviewer specifically questioned the 65-inch price relative to the 55-inch C8L and C7L.
Verdict: should you buy the TCL C8L?
The C8L is worth considering if picture impact, HDR format coverage and gaming features are your priorities. Choose by size and current local price rather than assuming every C8L variant is equally good value; take particular care with the 65-inch model.
