TCL 505 Review: A Big-Screen Budget Phone With Important Trade-Offs

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The TCL 505 makes sense only as a very inexpensive phone for basic use. Its large 6.75-inch screen, 5,010mAh battery, stereo speakers and 128GB of commonly listed storage suit calls, browsing and video; its entry-level processor, HD+ resolution, 10W charging and 4G-only connectivity limit the experience. Consider it if the price is well below newer alternatives and you have confirmed the exact model works with your carrier. Skip it if you need 5G, demanding-game performance, dependable long-term update commitments or strong cameras.

This is a specification-based buying assessment, not a hands-on review: the available material does not establish test results for screen brightness, real-world battery life, charging time, camera quality, performance or carrier activation. TCL also warns that features vary by market, so check the model number and local listing before buying.

TCL 505 specifications at a glance

Feature What is listed What to keep in mind
Display 6.75-inch HD+ LCD, up to 90Hz Large, but less sharp than a Full HD+ panel; TCL says refresh rate varies by app and gaming scenario.
Processor MediaTek Helio G36 Entry-level hardware, not intended for demanding games or heavy multitasking.
Memory and storage 4GB physical RAM, plus up to 4GB virtual RAM; 128GB commonly listed Virtual RAM is storage-backed and is not equivalent to 8GB of physical RAM. Configurations and expansion support may vary by market.
Rear cameras 50MP main/hybrid camera and 2MP secondary camera Megapixel count alone does not establish image quality; effective resolution can vary by mode.
Front camera 5MP Basic specification; image quality is not established by the available sources.
Battery and charging 5,010mAh; 10W charging Capacity is promising, but endurance depends on use and 10W charging is slow.
Software at launch Android 14 A long-term upgrade or security-update commitment for each market was not established.
Audio and network Stereo speakers; 4G LTE It is not a 5G phone. LTE bands and carrier compatibility depend on the regional model.

TCL lists Ocean Blue and Space Grey, while warning that specifications, colors and features can differ by country. See the official TCL product page and PhoneArena’s launch specification report; verify the exact local configuration rather than assuming every listing is identical.

Who should buy the TCL 505?

It suits basic, low-cost use

For calls, texts, email, web browsing, maps and light apps, the TCL 505 has the essentials on paper. The large screen is useful for reading and video, and stereo speakers make it more appealing for casual media than a small-screen phone. It could also work as a child’s first phone, a senior’s basic handset or a backup device, provided the user’s carrier supports the specific model.

It is a poor choice for performance or longevity

Look elsewhere if you regularly switch among demanding apps, play graphics-heavy games, want a sharp display, rely on low-light photography or expect a clear multi-year Android support policy. The 4G-only connection also makes the phone a weaker choice for someone specifically seeking 5G or a purchase intended to last through several network and software cycles.

Display: big and smooth, but not especially sharp

The 6.75-inch panel gives videos, maps and text plenty of physical space. Its 90Hz refresh-rate capability can make supported scrolling and animations appear smoother than on a standard 60Hz display. That does not mean every app or game runs at 90Hz: TCL says the refresh rate varies according to application and gaming scenario.

The resolution is HD+, commonly listed as 720 × 1600, so small text and fine details will not look as crisp as they do on Full HD+ budget phones. TCL markets NXTVISION color and eye-comfort features, but the available specifications do not establish outdoor brightness, color accuracy, viewing angles or how those settings look in practice. The high refresh-rate label should not be mistaken for proof of a premium display.

Performance: basic tasks, modest expectations

The MediaTek Helio G36 is the key limitation. It is a low-end platform suited to everyday essentials, not a reason to buy the phone for speed. Expect to be more patient with demanding apps, camera launches and switching among several apps than you would with a stronger budget handset. No exact-device testing results are established here, so benchmark scores or specific app-load times would be misleading.

TCL’s “4GB + 4GB” description means 4GB of physical RAM and up to 4GB of virtual RAM drawn from available storage. The latter may help the system manage apps, but it is not another 4GB of physical memory and cannot make the processor faster. Casual games are a more realistic fit than demanding 3D titles; a 90Hz panel does not remove the chipset’s limits.

Battery and charging: a large capacity, a slow refill

The 5,010mAh battery is one of the phone’s strongest specifications, especially for a buyer prioritizing capacity over charging speed. It does not guarantee a particular number of hours or a full day: brightness, mobile signal, refresh-rate behavior, apps and background activity all affect endurance. TCL says its battery figures are based on internal laboratory testing and that actual results vary.

  • Immersive HD+ Display – Enjoy a 6.56-inch HD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate, delivering smooth visuals and vibrant colors for gaming, streaming, and browsing.

Charging is rated at 10W, a significant compromise. A depleted phone may take a long time to refill, and buying a higher-wattage adapter will not make the handset charge beyond its supported limit. Charging time and whether an adapter is included depend on the regional package; neither is established for every version.

Cameras: do not buy for the megapixel count

The rear setup is described as a 50MP main or hybrid camera plus a 2MP secondary camera, with a 5MP front camera. Those figures describe resolution, not the quality of photos. Sensor and lens capability, image processing, focus, dynamic range and low-light handling matter too; TCL notes that effective resolution can vary with camera mode.

These specifications suggest a phone for casual snapshots rather than a photography-focused purchase, but they are not a substitute for sample images. Daylight detail, indoor and night performance, motion handling, portraits, selfies, video quality and stabilization have not been established by the available test evidence. If reliable camera results are a priority, compare actual samples from the exact handset before buying.

Software and updates: Android 14 at launch, support unclear

The TCL 505 launched with Android 14, according to PhoneArena’s specification report. The sources available do not establish a definitive Android-upgrade schedule or guaranteed security-patch period for each regional model. Do not assume a particular later Android version or a specific support end date from reseller listings alone.

Before purchase, ask the seller or TCL support which software version and security-patch date apply to the unit being sold, and whether an update commitment is published for that exact model and market. TCL’s TCL 505 support page is a useful starting point, but a support page by itself is not a promise of a specific update duration.

Check carrier compatibility before buying

The TCL 505 is a 4G LTE phone, and “unlocked” does not by itself guarantee service on every carrier. Regional models may use different bands or have different network support. This deserves particular care for U.S. buyers considering imported or marketplace stock.

  1. Find the exact model number. Check the retail box or the phone’s Settings > About phone screen; do not rely on the product name alone.
  2. Check LTE bands and VoLTE. Compare the model’s supported bands and voice-over-LTE support with the intended carrier’s requirements.
  3. Confirm activation directly. Ask the carrier or seller whether that exact model can be activated, including for the intended plan or MVNO.
  4. Verify lock status and return terms. Make sure the phone is unlocked if you need an unlocked device, and confirm you can return it if activation fails.

TCL’s compatibility guidance advises checking the supported bands and confirming SIM compatibility with the seller. A low listing price is no bargain if the phone cannot connect properly to your network.

Regional versions and what is not established

TCL cautions that specifications and features can vary by country. Confirm the model number and the local seller’s description for memory configuration, microSD support, headphone jack, included accessories, lock status and warranty. The commonly listed 128GB capacity does not prove that every market’s version has identical storage or expansion options.

The available product information does not establish water resistance, a ruggedness rating, a particular screen-protection glass or drop protection for every variant. Do not treat textured styling as evidence of durability. If those protections matter, require documentation for the exact model rather than relying on a general TCL 505 listing.

How it compares with budget alternatives

There is no reliable like-for-like current price comparison established here: prices vary by date, seller, region, carrier lock and promotion. Compare the total price and restrictions, not just a headline deal. A carrier-locked offer may require activation or service and is not directly comparable with an unlocked phone.

Option Why consider it Trade-off to check
TCL 505 Large 6.75-inch screen, 5,010mAh battery and commonly listed 128GB storage. 4G only, entry-level performance, 10W charging, and regional compatibility and support questions.
Motorola moto g play (2026) Motorola highlights IP52 protection, Gorilla Glass 3 and stereo speakers on its U.S. product page. Confirm the configuration, price, lock status and terms of the specific listing; it may not match the TCL’s storage or screen size.
Samsung Galaxy A16 5G Consider it if 5G and Samsung’s broader mainstream ecosystem matter more than the TCL’s large screen and listed storage. Carrier-locked promotional listings may involve activation or plan conditions; check the exact offer and support terms.
TCL 50 LE A same-brand option to compare if shopping for a prepaid handset. The linked listing identifies a Tracfone-locked 64GB version; that is not equivalent to an unlocked 128GB TCL 505.

Promotional listings are especially easy to misread. For example, the linked Walmart Family Mobile moto g play listing is carrier-specific; its terms should not be treated as a general unlocked-phone price. Check current terms with the retailer before deciding.

Buying checklist

  • Buy only if the TCL 505 is substantially cheaper than newer phones that meet your needs; no current universal price threshold is established.
  • Confirm exact model number, carrier compatibility, lock status, warranty and return policy before paying.
  • Choose it for basic use, screen size and battery capacity—not gaming, camera quality, fast charging or 5G.
  • Verify the software and security-update position with TCL or the seller for your regional model.
  • Check whether the specific version includes the features and accessories you expect, rather than assuming they are universal.

Verdict

The TCL 505 is a conditional buy for a very low price: it offers a large screen, substantial battery capacity, stereo audio and useful listed storage for straightforward everyday tasks. Its entry-level performance, HD+ panel, slow charging, basic camera specifications, 4G-only network and unclear long-term software commitment make it hard to recommend at a price close to a newer 5G alternative. For imported or marketplace units, carrier verification is essential before purchase.
