The ramp was a supply-chain readiness story, not an Apple announcement: the panel volumes and supplier allocations were industry estimates, not figures Apple confirmed.
What the production ramp involved
Initial panel production was reported to begin in June 2024, followed by a substantial increase in July. That timing gave Apple several weeks to build display inventory before the iPhone 16 launch in September. The reports concern OLED panels, not finished-phone assembly: a panel can be made well before it is installed in a handset.

On May 28, 2024, coverage said Apple had approved Samsung Display and LG Display for mass production of panels for the iPhone 16 Pro models. By August 8, reports described the broader production ramp. These milestones indicate a move from approval and initial output toward higher production; they do not establish that suppliers had reached full-rate production in June. MacRumors’ May report and its August coverage of the ramp summarize the supply-chain reporting.

What the reported panel figures mean
One widely cited estimate put expected 2024 iPhone 16 shipments at about 90 million devices and OLED-panel production at about 120 million panels. In the same account, Samsung Display’s projected target was about 80 million panels and LG Display’s about 43 million by year-end. These were forecasts, not Apple-confirmed orders, final production totals, or consumer sales. The August report attributes the estimates to Korean industry reporting.
| Measure | Reported figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Expected iPhone 16 shipments in 2024 | About 90 million devices | Forecast, not confirmed final sales. |
| Expected OLED-panel production | About 120 million panels | Production estimate, not a phone shipment figure. |
| Samsung Display target | About 80 million panels | Reported year-end projection. |
| LG Display target | About 43 million panels | Reported year-end projection. |
| Samsung and LG combined supply in a separate report | Slightly more than 130 million panels | A different estimate and reporting point; it should not be added to or treated as interchangeable with the 120-million estimate. |
The totals do not line up neatly: 80 million plus 43 million is about 123 million, while a separate report placed the combined supply slightly above 130 million. The figures may reflect different report dates, model scopes, or definitions—such as orders, production targets, or expected supply. The available reports do not provide enough detail to reconcile them into a single definitive total. DigiTimes’ report gives the separate estimate of more than 130 million.
Why panel production can exceed the phone forecast
A projected 120 million panels against roughly 90 million expected devices does not mean Apple planned to sell 120 million iPhones. In display manufacturing, output has to account for panels that fail yield or quality checks, as well as launch inventory, replacement and repair stock, and uncertainty in demand and supplier allocations. Those are plausible reasons for a gap, not a confirmed breakdown of how Apple or its suppliers accounted for these particular estimates.

It is also important to distinguish a supplier target from a shipment and a shipment from a sale. Targets can change as yields and demand become clearer; panel shipments do not establish how many finished phones Apple shipped to retailers or how many customers bought.
Which suppliers were linked to each model?
Early supply-chain reporting described Samsung Display as the broadest supplier, with panels planned across all four iPhone 16 models. LG Display was associated mainly with the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. A Korean report summarized by ETNews described that division, while other coverage noted a possible role for BOE on the standard models.
| Supplier | Reported role | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Display | Expected to supply all four models | Reported allocation, not an Apple-confirmed final model-by-model split. |
| LG Display | Primarily Pro and Pro Max | Reported focus; exact final volumes by model were not established. |
| BOE | Possible or limited supply for standard models | Participation was uncertain in early-cycle reporting; reports differed on its readiness and scope. |
Samsung Display is the relevant panel maker, not Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy-phone operation. Likewise, supplier plans do not prove that every handset of a given model used a panel from the same manufacturer. Multiple suppliers can make panels to Apple’s specification, and allocation can vary by batch or region.

BOE’s position was less settled than Samsung’s and LG’s. Some reports anticipated panels for the standard iPhone 16 and Plus, while others described technical, validation, legal, or quality-related constraints that could limit its early contribution. The available reporting does not establish a definitive final BOE allocation for every model or production month. MacRumors’ coverage discusses the uncertainty.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy the supplier mix mattered to Apple
Using more than one panel supplier can increase available capacity before launch and reduce dependence on any single factory’s yields or schedule. If one supplier has trouble meeting its target, another may provide some flexibility. A multi-supplier base can also give Apple more leverage in purchasing negotiations, although the reports do not quantify any price effect.
The arrangement has trade-offs. Different factories can have small variations in calibration, uniformity, power behavior, or component identifiers, which creates quality-control and inventory-management work even when panels meet the same product specification. A concentration of LG output in the Pro models could also leave those models more exposed to a problem in LG’s production than the wider lineup would be. These are supply-chain implications, not evidence that consumers received visibly different screens based on panel origin.

What the ramp did—and did not—tell buyers
Raising panel output was intended to support launch readiness: enough accepted displays had to be available for handset assembly and initial inventory. It could reduce the risk of display supply becoming a bottleneck, but it did not guarantee that every model would be readily available or rule out shortages caused by demand or other components.
It also did not establish a display upgrade. Apple’s specifications for the standard iPhone 16 list a 6.1-inch OLED display at 2,556 × 1,179 resolution and 460 pixels per inch, with Dynamic Island and HDR support. Apple lists typical maximum brightness of 1,000 nits, HDR peak brightness of 1,600 nits, outdoor peak brightness of 2,000 nits, minimum brightness of 1 nit, and a typical contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1. These are standard-model specifications; they should not be applied automatically to the Pro models. Apple’s iPhone 16 technical specifications document them.
Neither a higher panel count nor the use of multiple suppliers proves a higher refresh rate, a different OLED material set, increased brightness, or better battery life. The production reports addressed manufacturing readiness, not a change to the consumer-facing display specification.

How later shipment estimates compare
A later UBI Research estimate put Samsung Display’s 2024 iPhone 16-series panel shipments at about 63.8 million and LG Display’s at about 42 million. Those retrospective estimates differ from the earlier projected production targets of 80 million and 43 million. UBI Research’s press release reports the later figures.
The comparison is not a simple forecast-versus-audited-result calculation: the earlier figures were production targets, while the later figures were estimates of shipments, and the sources may use different scopes or counting methods. They nevertheless illustrate why prelaunch supply-chain targets should not be repeated as final deliveries. Neither set of estimates is an Apple-confirmed disclosure.
