Taylor Devices finished fiscal 2026 with a sharp year-over-year drop in fourth-quarter sales and earnings, but ended May 31 with a record $52.8 million firm order backlog. That backlog—92% aerospace and defense—could support a recovery if orders convert on schedule. It does not guarantee one: the company’s sales and net income fell for the full year, and management has not established when the backlog will become recognized revenue.
How weak was Taylor Devices’ FY2026 finish?
In its August 18, 2026 earnings release, Taylor Devices reported fourth-quarter sales of $8,954,650, down from $15,561,154 in the prior-year quarter. Full-year sales were $41,649,673, compared with $46,292,725 in FY2025. The comparison is especially stark in the quarter, when sales were about 42% lower year over year; full-year sales declined about 10%.
Net income followed the same direction. Fourth-quarter net income was $1,866,826, versus $3,688,076 a year earlier. For the full year, net income was $8,563,674, down from $9,413,136. FY2026 gross margin was 44%, compared with 46% in FY2025. The company therefore had both a lower revenue base and a modestly lower gross margin for the year.
Why did sales fall?
CEO Tim Sopko attributed the weaker quarter and year primarily to delayed customer order placement, which pushed opportunities to convert orders into sales beyond the fiscal year-end. That is management’s explanation for the timing of the decline, not confirmation that every delayed order will arrive or be recognized in a later period.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Management also cited higher interest rates and unfavorable exchange rates as continuing headwinds in structural markets. The sales mix helps explain why one broad recovery story may not fit every part of the business: aerospace and defense was the strongest market, while structural and industrial sales were weaker.
What does the record backlog say about a rebound?
At May 31, 2026, Taylor Devices reported a firm order backlog of $52.8 million, a company record. The company said 92% was aerospace and defense. Management also identified a discrete $19 million order as the largest single order in company history. These are orders awaiting performance, not completed sales or profit.

The backlog is meaningful relative to FY2026 sales, but that comparison should not be mistaken for a revenue forecast. The timing of delivery, conversion to recognized sales, and resulting margins determine whether orders materially improve reported earnings. A large order can also make results more dependent on execution and timing around that particular work.
The bullish case is conditional: if customers place and convert orders on schedule and aerospace/defense demand remains firm, revenue could improve from the weak FY2026 finish. The bearish case is that delayed conversion persists, structural and industrial markets stay soft, or the work converts with less favorable margins. The company’s results do not establish which path will occur.

How much does Taylor Devices depend on aerospace and defense?
The company’s Form 10-Q for the nine months ended February 28, 2026 reported that aerospace and defense accounted for 66% of sales, structural markets 24%, and industrial markets 10%. That is an earlier nine-month mix, not the full-year mix. By the May 31 year-end, the company said 92% of its firm backlog was aerospace and defense—an order-book figure, not a sales figure.
The distinction matters. The nine-month sales mix shows where revenue had come from during that period; the year-end backlog mix shows where future contracted work was concentrated. Neither figure alone establishes how quickly orders will convert or how profitable they will be.

What should investors watch next?
- Backlog conversion: Look for evidence that firm orders become reported sales, rather than treating the $52.8 million balance as revenue already earned.
- Market mix: Track whether aerospace and defense strength offsets weakness in structural and industrial demand.
- Margins: FY2026 gross margin was 44%, down from 46%. Revenue recovery without stable or improving margins may not produce a comparable recovery in earnings.
- Order timing and concentration: The company disclosed a $19 million single order. Timing or execution on a large order can affect period-to-period comparisons.
- Comparison base: FY2025 was a record year, so year-over-year comparisons may remain demanding even if business improves from the FY2026 fourth-quarter level.
The FY2026 Q3 filing had shown a different trend earlier in the year: for the nine months ended February 28, sales were $32.695 million, up 6% year over year, while net income increased 17%. Those figures are nine-month results, not a description of the completed fiscal year; the subsequent annual results show how sharply the fourth quarter changed the full-year picture.
Taylor Devices’ Form 10-Q cautions that backlog, revenue, gross profit, and net income fluctuate, and that changes in the nine-month period are not necessarily representative of future results. That warning fits the central investment question: the backlog supports a plausible recovery scenario, but the financial statements will have to show the conversion.

Does the evidence make TAYD a buy?
The earnings release and filings establish a weaker FY2026, a record backlog, and a backlog heavily weighted toward aerospace and defense. They do not establish the probability or schedule of conversion, the shares’ fair value, a price target, or analyst consensus. Without those inputs, the operational rebound thesis is not by itself proof that the stock is undervalued or likely to deliver a particular return.
Investors weighing the shares can treat the backlog as a reason to watch subsequent results, while requiring confirmation in recognized sales, margins, and earnings. The case remains a conditional rebound thesis rather than a demonstrated recovery.
