These quick fixes often restore a missing Windows 10 or Windows 11 taskbar without resetting the PC. If the whole screen is blank or black, skip to the blank-screen steps below.
1. Check whether the taskbar is set to hide
Move your mouse pointer to the bottom edge of the screen, or touch that edge. An automatically hidden taskbar may slide into view. If it appears, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors and clear Automatically hide the taskbar. See Microsoft’s Customize the Taskbar in Windows guide for the Windows 10 and 11 settings.

If the desktop is visible and the taskbar does not appear, Windows Explorer may need to be restarted. This is a built-in shell-recovery step and does not reset your files or settings.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If it opens in a compact view, select More details.
- Find Windows Explorer in the process list, right-click it, and select Restart.
- If Windows Explorer is not listed, select File > Run new task, type
explorer.exe, and press Enter.

3. Check the display setup
With multiple monitors, the taskbar may be appearing on another display or not set to show on every screen. Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors and check the option for showing the taskbar on all displays. Also confirm that the displays are connected and that Windows is using the intended display mode.

4. Restart the PC and install Windows updates
Restart the computer after trying the steps above. If the taskbar returns but Explorer remains unreliable, install available Windows updates and restart when prompted. Microsoft recommends checking for updates and restarting as early steps when File Explorer will not open or start; see Fix File Explorer if it won’t open or start.
5. If the screen is blank or black, use the blank-screen path
A usable desktop with no taskbar is different from a blank or black screen. For a blank display, first check monitor connections and display mode. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del; if the security screen appears, open Task Manager and try restarting Windows Explorer as described above. If that does not help, Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance covers Safe Mode, recovery options, and display-driver update or rollback where appropriate. A missing taskbar by itself does not establish that the graphics driver is at fault.

6. Use system repair and recovery only if the shell keeps failing
If Explorer repeatedly crashes or the taskbar remains unavailable after a restart and updates, move to Windows system-file checks and recovery options. Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting guidance includes system-file repair and recovery options such as Startup Repair. If the problem began recently, System Restore may be another option; use these later steps only after the simpler checks fail.
Could this be a known Windows 11 enterprise issue?
Microsoft’s KB5072911 support notice documents a specific issue on some enterprise devices running Windows 11 version 24H2 or 25H2 after provisioning with certain monthly cumulative updates released from July 2025 onward. In those circumstances, Explorer, Start, Settings, Taskbar, or Search may fail because required XAML packages do not register in time. Microsoft says the issue is addressed starting with updates released June 23, 2026, with rollout continuing in a subsequent monthly update. This is not a general explanation for a taskbar disappearing on every PC. If your device is managed by work or school and matches these circumstances, share its Windows version and update history with your administrator.

Windows 10 support note
Microsoft’s taskbar instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, but free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended after October 14, 2025. That support status does not change the taskbar checks above.
