If Task Manager’s uptime stays high after you shut down but resets after you choose Restart, Fast Startup is the most likely explanation. Fast Startup uses a hibernation-based shutdown path, which can carry the reported kernel uptime into the next start. Restart performs a fresh start. To make ordinary shutdowns reset uptime, turn off Fast Startup; the tradeoff is losing its faster-start benefit. This explanation comes from Microsoft-hosted community guidance, not a Microsoft support article devoted specifically to Task Manager’s counter.
First, check whether the uptime is actually wrong
A high uptime after powering on does not prove that Windows was continuously awake. Elapsed-time counters can include time spent in sleep or hibernation. Microsoft’s Windows time documentation distinguishes measurements: GetTickCount and GetTickCount64 include sleep and hibernation time, while QueryUnbiasedInterruptTime counts only time spent in the working state. The documentation also identifies a System Up Time performance counter.

Task Manager’s uptime is useful for seeing how long the relevant Windows session has been running, but it is not by itself a record of how long the PC was actively in use. The practical first test is to compare what happens after Restart with what happens after Shut down.

- Open Task Manager and note the uptime.
- Select Start > Power > Restart.
- After Windows starts, open Task Manager again and check the uptime.
If Restart resets the counter but Shut down followed by powering on does not, Fast Startup is a strong suspect. Microsoft-hosted community answers describe Fast Startup as using a hibernation-based shutdown path, which can preserve the reported kernel uptime across a normal shutdown and subsequent start. The detailed Windows 11 example concerns Windows 11 Pro 23H2, build 22631.4602; the explanation is community guidance rather than a formal Microsoft diagnosis for every Windows version. See the Windows 11 Q&A answer and the older Windows 8 community answer.

Choose how you want shutdown and uptime to behave
| Choice | What it does | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Fast Startup on and use Restart when needed | Preserves Fast Startup for ordinary shutdowns; Restart provides a deliberate fresh start and resets uptime. | You want the faster-start benefit most of the time and only occasionally need a fresh start. |
| Turn off Fast Startup | Ordinary shutdowns can provide a fresh start instead of using Fast Startup’s hibernation-based path. | You want a normal Shut down followed by power-on to reset the reported uptime. |
Use shutdown /s /t 0 |
A Microsoft-hosted community answer suggests this command as a shutdown workaround that does not provide Fast Startup benefits on the next boot. | You need a one-time shutdown workaround and are comfortable using a command. |
The available sources do not quantify Fast Startup’s speed benefit, so there is no reliable time saving to weigh against the behavior you prefer.
Turn off Fast Startup in Power Options
- Press Windows key + R, enter
powercfg.cpl, and press Enter. - Select Choose what the power buttons do.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Clear Turn on fast startup, then save the changes.
- Shut down and power on again, then check Task Manager’s uptime.
These labels and their locations can vary by Windows release. The steps are described in the Microsoft-hosted Windows 11 community answer.

Use systeminfo carefully
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include the systeminfo command for displaying detailed computer and operating-system configuration information, including a System Boot Time field. Microsoft documents the command on its systeminfo reference page. However, a boot-time field is not necessarily an independent check of whether Fast Startup carried forward the prior kernel session: Microsoft-hosted community reports describe boot-time and uptime outputs retaining that session after a Fast Startup shutdown.
A 2023 Microsoft Q&A question also lists Environment.TickCount, systeminfo, and WMI LastBootUpTime as methods that did not give the author the desired start time with Fast Startup enabled. The page has no answer, so it does not establish a better alternative. See the question about finding OS start time with Fast Startup enabled.

If uptime still looks wrong after Restart
If uptime remains unexpectedly high after Restart, the Fast Startup explanation is not enough to diagnose the issue. Check which Windows version you are using and whether the restart completed, then investigate the behavior on that specific configuration. The cited community answers explain the Fast Startup pattern but do not establish a universal cause or fix for every inconsistent counter.
