The Target Food Processor TAFP9042 earned positive marks for basic food-preparation tasks in CHOICE’s 2019 testing, but its high noise, sparse attachments and discontinued status matter if you are considering one now. CHOICE lists it as discontinued, and its often-repeated $49 price is historical—not a current offer.
What the Target TAFP9042 is
CHOICE lists the TAFP9042 as a medium-bowl food processor with a 500 W motor and 1,800 mL capacity. Its product entry gives a weight of 2.6 kg and dimensions of 40 x 24 x 23 cm (H x W x D). How it performed in CHOICE’s 2019 test
CHOICE’s article, updated 29 May 2019, describes testing that included slicing carrots, making breadcrumbs, shredding cheese, kneading shortcrust pastry, emulsifying mayonnaise, operation and cleaning. CHOICE reported that the processor handled key tasks well. These are results from that 2019 test, not a current ranking against products now on sale. Strong breadcrumb result
In the breadcrumb task, CHOICE reported a score of 100% for the Target unit, describing the bread as evenly and finely chopped. Two KitchenAid models scored 80% on that same task. This comparison applies only to the models and test conditions in CHOICE’s 2019 article; it does not establish that the Target processor is better overall.
Carrot slicing and everyday handling
CHOICE said the TAFP9042’s carrot-slicing result matched tested Russell Hobbs and Kambrook processors that were about twice the price at the time. The article also described the machine as compact, with a decent-sized bowl and relatively few parts. Those observations suggest a simple setup for basic jobs, but do not resolve the limitations around attachments and storage.

Drawbacks CHOICE identified
- High noise: CHOICE described the processor as very noisy. The public information does not state a decibel measurement.
- Few attachments: It came with a limited set of attachments and only one size of shredding/slicing blade.
- No blade or tool storage: The tools do not have dedicated storage, so they need to be kept separately.
- Hold-to-run pulse control: The pulse button had to be held down while operating, rather than pressed once to pulse.
CHOICE also noted a safety lock on the large chute and described the blade as simple and safe to clean. These points are useful context, but they do not replace checking the condition and safe operation of an individual second-hand unit.
Is a TAFP9042 worth considering now?
It may make sense as a used appliance if the unit is complete, works properly and suits your needs for straightforward chopping and slicing. The 2019 results are encouraging for those tasks, but the model’s discontinued status and the absence of verified current stock or price mean the old $49 figure should not be used to judge today’s value.

Before buying a used unit, check that its bowl, lid, blades and locking parts are present and undamaged, and confirm that the motor runs and the controls work. If any part is missing, do not assume that another appliance with a similar model code will fit. A third-party device database records related codes including BTFP9042*, FP9042 and FP9042K-SA, but that relationship does not establish accessory compatibility. What to compare when buying a current processor
CHOICE’s historical review does not identify a specific current replacement. When assessing models available where you live, compare the features that shaped the TAFP9042’s strengths and trade-offs:

- Bowl capacity and the space the appliance takes up on a bench or in storage.
- Results for the tasks you do most, especially slicing, shredding and chopping.
- Noise, attachment selection and whether blades and tools have a storage solution.
- Whether pulse control is hold-to-run or one-touch, and what safety interlocks are included.
- Ease of cleaning, warranty coverage, current price and confirmed availability.
For a direct substitute, check the retailer’s current listing and the manufacturer’s documentation rather than treating a similar capacity or model number as proof of equivalent performance or compatible parts.

Fiona Mair, CHOICE home economist and tester, said in the article updated 29 May 2019: “The Target food processor performed consistently well and, in some cases better than, models from other leading brands we’ve tested,” and, “It’s a great little machine for just $49.” The price in that quotation is the historical price cited in the 2019 article, not an indication of today’s price.
